Thanks for all the advice. My ability to keep up with the latest on unlock news is limited these days.

FYI, I realized I had my wifes old Samsung phone that I own outright. Called ATT and they gave me the unlock code. So, that will be my heavy long distance phone with a local rent-a-sim in Hong Kong.

The iPhones and iPad will still be used with wifi access. From what I understand there is a ton of free access and pay available.

Thanks again.

Alot of the free wifi in HK has some sort of time limit (usually 30 mins). I believe there are cards where you can buy to use wifi. I have little knowledge on this cause I am on unlimited data plan.

You may try asking Apple if they can unlock your devices.
Explain the situation, it's not like if people at Apple were a mean with fascist leaders unwilling to help.

Buy an unlocked iPhone 4 in HK and sell your AT&T locked iPhone on craigslist. The unlocked 16GB is only about $640 US, and you should be able to get $500 for your iPhone 4 on craigslist if it's in good condition. Or, just sell the unlocked iPhone 4 when you get back to the US for $700 easily.

I'm traveling to Asia for 6 weeks next year, so I used my upgrade pricing to get an AT&T locked 32GB iPhone 4 for $300, sold it on craigslist, and then went to Canada to pay full price for an unlocked iPhone. I refuse to pay AT&T's outrageous roaming fees.

Apple is nice, but that doesn't change the fact they have an exclusive contract with AT&T.
Besides, the OP made his choice by refusing to exercise a little restraint when it came to updating his software. I don't know when my next overseas trip is, but I know to be judicious in my upgrades and to save my SHSH blobs. It required 60 minutes of research to figure this out. Even if it required a larger investment of time, I think the time spent is worth having an unlockable phone. The OP didn't agree and now he's in his current situation.
He's already stated he's found a workaround. Let's close this, shall we?

You have no clue why I updated. Go away. I presented my problem and asked for advice, not some jerk giving me lessons in when to update. I had a valid reason to update, and it was before I knew about my trip. Go away nasty person. And no, I do not have the time right now to keep up with what TinyUmbrella is doing.
You see, I asked a question and others helped me. You, did not.

Really? They helped you? How's your unlock coming along then? Why'd you update? FindMyiPhone? Air Print? Good job, now since you can print without a wire, you also can't use the phone overseas.

Prepaid with CMHK has unlimited data for 78HKD (approx) for a month.

You should be banned. People like you make this forum much less desirable. You seem like you don't even realize how much of a jacka$$ you come across as.

so what did u end up doing?

i am in hk, and have iphone 4.0.2with 01.59 baseband, had the phone jailbroken and "unlocked" before i came...

bought a microsim prepaid sim card form 3, and it could not find any network... now im stuck and looking online for solutions

We took our iPhones and Ipad to HK and just used them on free WiFi at the hotel, coffee places, and malls. I had a phone that was a few years old (sony) that I unlocked by calling ATT to ask for the unlock code and they hooked me up, then prepaid sims got us all the phone calls we needed.
Not sure what is wrong if your iphone is unlocked but not working with prepaid cards. Maybe go my route above and just by a paygo phone, or rent one.

Just about every corner in HK has stands selling the Gevy\Rebel SIM knockoffs, they work just fine on any of the iPhone 4 models... and cost about $200 HKD... or about $5 USD there

$5USD is not = to $200HKD. $5 USD is around $39HKD.

Sorry, I had Philippine Pesos on the mind, sorry for the conversion error... either way, if you buy in Manila or HKG or Beijing it's $5 USD, whatever that converts to in their local currencies, lol

When Gevey SIM first came out in middle March in Shanghai, I paid 400 CYN which is $61, price has gone down drastically since, but not at $5, at least 100 CNY which is $15.

For carrier in Hong Kong, go with People's, it's subdivision of China Mobile, reliable and cheap. It costs me 2.5 cents USD per minute to call back the States, unbelievable.

I use Tru Mobile SIM card whenever I travel. They're about half as much as AT&T roaming rates, and you can get a US or UK number, so it's convenient for me. Easier than buying a sim in each country, and it works anywhere. Data rates are high tho.

1/2 of AT&T international roaming is still pretty bad IMO.

Local SIM's in Asia has very cheap rates, usually few cents USD per minute calling internationally.
But true, it's not as convenient, I carry a SIM card holder with cards from a dozen countries LOL.

I agree, but it's still half, and you always know your number, and most importantly people calling to you from the US when you travel don't pay, and with Tru SIMS the incoming texts are free for them AND free for you to receive... and if you try to manage keeping loads on each SIM from each country you'll go broke and ultimately go to use it and forget sometime... Tru doesn't expire... one of those calculated values, and to me it's worth it to pay a little more. They do a thing where you can buy into discounted rates for $15 a month "membership fee" (can be added and removed anytime), and makes rates as cheap as using the local carriers in many countries... but for me I just have international SIMs for emergencies, so I might spend a couple bux in texts, not enough to warrant anything but the higher "non subscription" rates.

HK data simcard

Go buy a prepaid data sim card from CSL.
$78hkd for 7days.

I was in HK for a month and used it on my ip4.
BTW they did factory unlock it @ one2free dealer.
I was going to buy a new ip4, but the nice women unlocked my phone instead.

They didn't "factory unlock it" ... you need to learn terminology or you're going to confuse people. They either used a Gevy\Rebel Unlock, or did a Software Unlock (ie ultrasnow), but there's no way to "factory unlock" a US iPhone taken to Hong Kong

So will gevey sim work in hong kong? I am going to hong kong next month and I have an iPhone that wanted to use.

If it can be used with t-mobile, it should be unlocked, so yes, you can use it in HK.

All of my family's iPhones are unlocked iPhones from HK carriers.

We use them in the US, HK, and inside China via different sim cards with no problems.
