I travel every week, and I am a AW owner since it launch.

As the other says, it's just an extension of your phone. Is it usefull will depends on how you use it (both your phone and watch). Even though no data plan, offline map (NOT the native map app) still works. I always leave my phone in airplane mode at outport to avoid unnecessary calls and possible data roaming, just manually turn on BT and Wifi after switch to airplane mode to enjoy using my watch and offline map. In this config, I can even accept Wi-Fi call (for free) when I am under Wi-Fi network.

One of the handy function the watch is the ability to display multiple time (e.g. I can easily setup a face to display my home time, current time, and UTC). And it will automatically update the primary time to your current location time zone.

The haptic engine makes you can sleep on train or bus without worrying missing station. You can now properly store your phone in a inner pocket to avoid the thief. And set an alarm to wake you up by vibration only, so you won't make any noise to others (e.g. you have to get off the train at mid-night), no need to pull the phone out when the alarm ring (which may be a bit hard if properly stored to avoid thief during sleep), and you won't miss the alarm no matter how noisy out there (or with ear plug on).

And of course, you can put all your boarding pass (or even hotel key) on the watch if the airline (hotel) support it.

The 2m long lightning cable usual works well in hotel. Most of the hotel have power socket just next to the bed. When you charging the watch (during sleep), you can leave the watch next to you in night stand mode (on the bed). And all you need to do now is pat your bed, then the watch face will come on and show you the time (and if there is any notification), no need to wake up.

What offline maps app are you referring to that works on Apple Watch? Got a link?

Again, it is very inconvient, but I guess it's a solution.
Not at all, and I highly recommend it. I have duplicate cables for all of my devices. That way, I can leave them permanently setup at home and then I carry my additional cables. It makes life massively easier. I have my permanent lightning cable at home, a charging cable in my car, and a cable I always carry around. My kids have their MBA chargers for home and in their school lockers so they are never without. I have tried the one charger thing before, and it does not work out.

Mainly because I only have an Apple Watch and most of the other people I know don't. So I only have the charger. But the charger is on the stand at home. So it's annoying to coil it us from the stand and use it.

If you could not afford 2nd charger for $30, you probably should not buy AW for $350+.
It is like buying a new car but can't afford to pay for oil, oil filter, and other necessity.

I guess. I think that it would be different if it was a lighting charger

Is there even offline maps that work for Apple Watch?

This apps makes offline maps for Apple Watch.

However, TBH, use offline maps (especially for navigation) on the iphone is a much much better option. The watch is just an assistant for receiving notification. Technically, any offline map that can give out navigation notification will works. All you need is something to alert you to turn etc, but I only use it during walking (or on public transport). For drivers, this is not good enough, since there is no direct instruction for navigation.

Eh, I disagree. When I traveled it was more annoying lol

Give it another try.

Notifications, reminders, messages, music and podcast control, boarding passes, hotel check-in... Necessary? No. Convenient? Surely. Cool? Egad yes.

Yep, all of my devices have duplicate chargers that I keep all together in a tiny bag, so I just grab it when I leave. It's must for any device, IMO. That reminds me, one of my USB-C cables just died (near the jack,) so I need to replace it so that I have two on hand.

I recently traveled domestically in the U.S., to Canada, and to the U.K. with my watch. Just having your home time on the face of the watch is almost worth it. It was excellent to easily see what time it was for calls and communication.

If you have an airline app that transfers boarding passes to Wallet, that is also very convenient. It is great passing through airport security and boarding using the watch instead of your phone.

Navigation is also very handy. The watch signals to you through the haptic feedback, and that is nice when driving or walking.
All of the above. Working in Tokyo this week and great to have UK time a glance away. Bought a spare charger and a Spigen Nightstand, and that's all I need to turn my Watch into a great travel companion.

I've not traveled internationally with the Apple Watch. I'll be taking it to India next week. However I used an Android Wear watch previously and LOVED the fact the watch automagically adjusts to the local timezone.

I think I'm going to go for it. One of the big selling points for me is the Sennheiser clip mic that is controllable by the apple watch (http://en-de.sennheiser.com/clipmic-digital). I do film making and photography as a profession and it means I don't have to carry a separate recorder or have a complicated wireless mic setup when I travel. I just put the iPhone in my interviewee's pocket, clip the lav on their shirt, and start/stop/monitor/set-mic-input-levels with the watch. From what I read it works pretty well. This is huge for me - a killer app if it works as advertised!!

I lust for that mic. And being able to control it from my Watch would be nirvana.

I'm so excited I just bought the clip mic before I even ordered the Apple Watch! The Watch is next.. I think I'm going to go for the silver color aluminum sport watch but with a black sport band (even though I have to buy the band separately). I like how silver and black go together.

It's all about the accessories . . . . :)

I'm visiting Rome at the end of the week, had pondered over buying the watch for ages, then I saw someone using Maps on it for getting around and I was sold on it. I'd buy it.
I'd be careful in Rome. If you go anywhere near a tourist site, you'll be swarmed by pickpockets and the apple watch is a very visible high-value target.

I've been there before, I'm quite the violent type myself, prone to crushing the odd skull now and then if the needs arise. Have you direct experience yourself of being swarmed by pickpockets? I have never encountered this in Rome. Perhaps you stand out as a soft touch?
