pretty sure someone is going to say: "oh come on, pro models should be 512GB MINIMUM!!!!!"

🙄
Not being funny, I moved from the iPhone 13 pro max which was 256GB, went to the Samsung S23 Ultra (amazing) which was the 512GB, and for me to migrate back over, I would need 512GB to be the base, because I cant stomach paying $300US for storage I know costs $25.

So you're comment has some comedic value, but I also find the storage prices from apple an absolute riot!

as someone with 120gb+ of photos (since my iphone 4 days) and 60gb+ of local music i’ve collected since 2007, 256gb is starting to feel tight

All I’m asking for is for the upgrade from 256gb to 512gb to be $100 instead of the current $200

With memory becoming so cheap, i’d love for this to happen. If not, i’ll just stay with 256gb and delete some more tunes
Don't forget to regularly back up photos. I had lost 100Gb of fine shots once when I though my iPhone is brick and performed a cloud wipe. My whole life from 2020-2022 got into trashbin of history.

Also, never back them up to HDD. These are very unreliable. One shake and info is gone

I wonder if there’s any chance they will only use 256 GB chips this year - if so could there be a chance that the base model could have slower drive performance like other recent devices?

Do the current base 128 GB phones use more than one storage module?

I've been buying 256GB phones since iPhone 7 Plus. I have determined that to store my music collection, some pictures, apps and data, I tend to use about 128GB. Even today.

This means that 256GB is perfect for me. It may not be perfect for anyone else, anywhere else, ever.

Then the storage tiers will look like this:
256MB (TLC NAND)
512MB (TLC NAND)
1TB (TLC NAND)
2TB (QLC NAND)
Just my 2 cents.

great point! I regularly back up my iPhone to my macbook so it includes all my photos on my phone. free and no icloud needed.

Can Gemini edit my RAW photos without driving them into watercolor like all Pixels do (at least on the level of editing that Irix HDR provides)? Can Gemini write a dumb reddit comment that will collect 1k+ upvotes? Can Gemini upload photos to Instagram automatically at schedule or even create a custom schedule? Can Gemini be my social media manager and write posts daily for me just after I say "well write something good about todays news, show me before posting!". I DOUBT. Useless, useless AI features that do not correlate with what REAL people need in REAL LIFE. It is just a poor marketing attempt, yet another money grab for Google. Well good for them, if there are people who actually believe in that pseudo-AI nonsense then yeah
You don't know what you're talking about.
"Can Gemini write a dumb reddit comment that will collect 1k+ upvotes?" - possible, yes. At least it can help you.

So AI could help you to create filters, and there are/or atleast will be ways where communicate with your device and tell it "attach filter to all photos we made at the beach today".

But in your rage, I have to repeat - you simply don't know what AI is and what it can be used for. Either you learn, or you will be falling behind your competitors.

But hey, you can ask Gemini all your questions

Not true at all - I am a very heavy user of photos (Google Maps Lvl 10 contributor, 1bn+ views) and have never exceeded 128GB on my phone.

You have to be a power user - aka a lot of games, a lot of videos, to need 512GB. 95% of people won't need anywhere near it.

Spot on. So many people here don't (or refuse to) understand the overwhelming majority of Apple iPhone (and computer) users aren't into tech, and instead are just ordinary people.

And don't even know what a GB is or means. Or what the difference is between memory and storage.

It would be a "good move" if they adjusted the price as well. What they are doing is basically just removing the lowest $999 price point, and the 256GB version will cost the same as last year, $1099.

A good move would have been selling the 256 version at $999 ...

So this is maybe a move to save headaches from people who would have otherwise chosen the 128GB model. Now they will need more money to go Pro, but at least they get a sensible amount of storage. This just makes more money for Apple 🤷🏻‍♂️
Exactly. This is just moving the goalpost for what a Pro iPhone sells for, not making iPhones better or offering a better value.

Eliminating the enough-for-most 128GB@$999 is not increasing the value/$ for the consumer, just forcing buyers to spend no less than $1099.

I don’t know why anyone is clapping their hands for this.

-You’re not getting 256GB for $999 with the base 16 Pro. You’ll still be paying $1099 as always, just without the 128GB/$999 option.

The arguments that everyone needs 256GB or more is just apologizing.

-64GB is too little, and 128GB the sweet spot on a smartphone.

Apple just needs us to spend more when we upgrade as less of us upgrade as frequently as we used to.

With next to no CPU and GPU performance increases from year to year, there pushing this “you’re a photographer” marketing narrative on us, so “of course” we need to all spend more to get 256GB to store all our photos.

Apple made that "good move" back in 2020. When base storage for the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max were increased from 64GB to 128GB, Apple kept prices the same as they were for lower storage 11 models ($999 and $1,099).

They didn't do that last year, however, when the Pro Max base storage increased to 256GB.

Well, 256GB is minimum.
You need alone 64GB for the apps. Plus 64GB for the minimal storage of these apps. And then storage for files, photos etc

If you like to make photos or videos in high res it should be 512GB on your phone.

I have 205gb free on my 256gb 13 Pro, so I've used 51gb.

I have no idea where you are getting your numbers from.

Considering what Apple charges the pro models bloody well should start at 512GB, storage is not that expensive these days but Apple hasn't got that memo yet. If they do add a 2TB this year then it should be 512GB, 1TB, 2TB.

It's because of the telephoto tetraprism zoom lens that the iPhone 15 Pro Max uses and both rumored iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will use. The telephoto tetraprism zoom lens is way more expensive than before and that's why Apple is bringing 256GB as the base storage to have high profit margins.
