Apple bucked a trend when it unveiled macOS Monterey in June featuring an abstract wallpaper graphic, breaking an eight-year tradition of using a photo of the natural landscape that inspired the latest Calfornia-themed version name.

This change came as a shock to YouTuber and photographer Andrew Levitt and his friends Jacob Phillips and Taylor Gray, whom together have made recreating macOS wallpapers something of a tradition.

Once the trio of friends had come to terms with the new abstract wallpaper, they concluded that it was supposed to represent Monterey Canyon, which is deep underwater and impossible to photograph. So, instead they decided to create their own Monterey landscape, but finding the right shot came with its own problems, as their intrepid video diary explains.

After several false starts, the group eventually found an ideal location – Lone Cypress on Pebble Beach – and, using time-lapse photography, were able to create a not only a still image but also a dynamic wallpaper that changes according to the time of day.

They have since made both the still shot and the dynamic version available to download. The following steps explain how to install the dynamic version of the Monterey wallpaper.
  1. Click the Apple symbol in the menu bar and select System Preferences....
  2. Click Desktop & Screen Saver in the preferences pane.

Select one of the official wallpapers that come with macOS, such as "Catalina," "Big Sur," or "Monterey Graphic," and set it to Dynamic.

Open a Finder window and navigate to the "macOS Monterey.heic" wallpaper you downloaded.
Right-click (or Ctrl-click) on the file and select Services -> Set Desktop Picture from the contextual menu.

I'll only use the default desktop picture provided by Apple with each Mac OS release. I'm sure Apple went through millions of desktop pictures before choosing one.

Who am I to decide to go against Apple.

Indeed. Default Big Sur and default Monterey wallpapers are not good. We need wallpapers of our world as we see it, to give our technology more of a human feel.

Doing God's work, excellent! Downloaded!

Although... I can't get the dynamic file set? There is no services sub-menu when I right-click the file. If I just just set desktop picture, it changes for a moment, then goes back to Monterey default dynamic.Screenshot 2021-11-02 at 13.22.41.png

Looks good. Somewhat on topic, when I first booted my new MacBook Pro, there was a Monterey screen saver, but it is now gone. Does anyone know of a potential fix?

Quoting myself, but I fixed it. The easiest thing to do is just drag the dynamic file into /Library/Desktop Pictures. Any .heic files in there are added to the dynamic desktop panel in System Preferences.

Hi, I am not allowed to paste into that folder. It is locked.
Also, I realised there are some wallpapers in the folder is not available to be picked from system setting.

For a ton more just like this, I would highly recommend the $10 Mac app “24 Hour Wallpaper”.

It has a bunch of really high-quality time lapse wallpapers keyed to change throughout the day. It bypasses Apple‘s built in wallpaper engine and I think works a bit better and more precisely. You do have to keep the app running, but it seems to be pretty low overhead. It has tons more photos than the ones Apple provides, and they add new ones from time to time. I prefer the "static view" ones myself, but there are also ones which shuffle through different views at different times of day.

edit: added link to their website

What a cool idea! I would highly recommend the Mac app “24 Hour Wallpaper” which I believe I found out about from a fellow forum member here. That’s interesting wait! Where did you find it?

I have no such folders in /Library or ~/Library
I had the folder, with some other non-Apple dynamic wallpapers in there. I recall I had bought a pack of them for $5 from a designer.

But basically: I'm not sure the instructions provided here are correct. Googling for it might get you something that actually works.

Nice one! Downloaded.
My guess is that Apple have one too. They just decided not to use it.
It's not like they really do it annually just to get ready for the OS release.
