Hmm not wise to assume considering mobile devices are everywhere along with internet access granted some place have poor coverage but for all you know this poster could be sitting on a beach and making said comment.

This is where dreams go to die.

I was like nice hobby but why? What next recreate iOS wallpaper? No originality other than to recreate, well it’s been done. Best to move along.

Uhhh because recreating wallpapers got them exposure on Apple news sites that they otherwise would not have gotten if they only took other photos...

This was a fun adventure for them and a challenge they decided to take up and they executed it extremely well. Maybe Apple will notice too and get them for the next wallpaper photo shoot.

It’s amazing that just because you can’t see why someone would do something, it means that they shouldn’t do it.

I personally like theirs better. Apple's are good but sometimes too much Lightroom (or I'm sure they'd say Photos) is a bad thing.

Interesting.

Until Catalina, I had already visited all the spots for Apple's OS names beforehand.

Mavericks=Yup, been to that area and saw the big waves (never during the actual competition, though).
Yosemite=Been there too many times to count and have way too many sunset pictures of Half Dome to begin to count.
El Captain=Ditto. Been on top twice as well.
Sierra=Been to many places in the Sierras, including to the top of Mt Whitney twice (which is pictured in one of Apple's Wallpapers for Sierra).
High Sierra=Not really a separate place, but been to a lot of high and remote places in the Sierras.
Mojave=A real long time ago I did visit the desert and surrounding area.
Catalina=Never been to the island, but have seen it off the coast from LA.

The only wallpaper I actually tried to recreate was the High Sierra wallpaper, mostly because I was curious where that picture was taken so looked it up. North Lake in the Bishop Canyon. Since you could drive most of the way there, I'm not sure it really qualifies as being in the 'high sierra', but whatever. :)

So last year, I did go up to look for some fall color and did find the spot from where Apple's wallpaper was taken from:

Apple's version:

And my version tweaked in Photoshop a bit to make the color pop a bit more:

Maybe these guys just like hiking and photography. There are so many places to hike everywhere you can't hit them all. So when something like this comes up it gives you a new idea of where to go and what your goal is.

I'm pretty sure these aren't the only pictures these guys ever take. I'm guessing hiking/photography is a big part of their lives and they just did this for fun.

What's with all the "originality" comments? Why must every creation be 100% original and never done before?

A couple of years ago, I participated in a contest in which I had to travel all over my state finding and re-creating 100 historical photographs. I enjoyed every part of it: the research, the history lessons, the journeys, the bonding with friends, etc. 'Copying' also help you learn techniques that can lead to original creations as well.

So, good for these guys and their artistic adventures. I think it would be awesome for Apple to follow with behind-the-scenes info on how their wallpaper was made - I wonder how similar the methods were.

Couldn't they just got a boat out there, fly a drone, and gotten the same photo? -Yes, I know it wouldn't be as much fun.
If you watched the video before writing a comment, you'd know that they actually couldn't. And they did fly a drone.

Catalina is a great place to hike and camp. I used to escape L.A. all the time to romp around there. Fun to read about their journey there and see their excellent shot. Also, take the other ferry if you want to get to the north side. Their hike would have been a lot shorter 😆.

The High Sierra scene, with the different foliage colors and seasons (and different times of day), would IMO make a great dynamic wallpaper.
