or some people are able to enjoy life in a way that doesn’t involve a 9-5 desk job...
Must be nice.

Yeah, same with the people who are so jealous they have to make remarks on the internet while they're grasping for another coffee at their boring job
My job actually involves coffee and it's not boring. I'm not jealous a bit but not sure why this is a news item.

Interesting.

Until Catalina, I had already visited all the spots for Apple's OS names beforehand.

Mavericks=Yup, been to that area and saw the big waves (never during the actual competition, though).
Yosemite=Been there too many times to count and have way too many sunset pictures of Half Dome to begin to count.
El Captain=Ditto. Been on top twice as well.
Sierra=Been to many places in the Sierras, including to the top of Mt Whitney twice (which is pictured in one of Apple's Wallpapers for Sierra).
High Sierra=Not really a separate place, but been to a lot of high and remote places in the Sierras.
Mojave=A real long time ago I did visit the desert and surrounding area.
Catalina=Never been to the island, but have seen it off the coast from LA.

The only wallpaper I actually tried to recreate was the High Sierra wallpaper, mostly because I was curious where that picture was taken so looked it up. North Lake in the Bishop Canyon. Since you could drive most of the way there, I'm not sure it really qualifies as being in the 'high sierra', but whatever. :)

So last year, I did go up to look for some fall color and did find the spot from where Apple's wallpaper was taken from:

My version:

Apple's version:
High-Sierra.jpg

And my version tweaked in Photoshop a bit to make the color pop a bit more:

So the third photo is artificial? Got it.

I don’t work a typical 9-5 desk job, I feel there is not originality in this concept. Why not do something better, it’s nature every second and angle will render a different result. It does not make it better or worse just why. Be creative is what Apple’s marketing is all about, this is not.

I thought that too but maybe there was money to be made. Perhaps ad revenue from having something so unusual that is clickable from the heading. When I saw this article, I was instantly interested in learning more for some reason. I could use my time for much better things but here I am.

My first thought: This is dumb.

Then I watched the video. WOW. 😍

And now we have truly breathtaking footage being displayed as AppleTV screensavers, too. Utterly breathtaking!

I was like nice hobby but why? What next recreate iOS wallpaper? No originality other than to recreate, well it’s been done. Best to move along.

Your profile pic pretty much summarizes what I think of your comment. 🤣

I didn't think this was a stellar idea either, but after watching the video and seeing the challenges that these guys had to go through, I have tremendous respect for them. They set out to do something and did it. What have you achieved today?

If they did something original, they wouldn't have gotten a free Macrumors article. You could argue that this isn't photographically creative (though admittedly far more difficult than being original), but it does seem like pretty creative marketing :p

Use a drone. Guess these dudes have time to spare. Get a job.
This is why we can't have nice things. 😕

As one of the irregular regulars here, I greatly appreciate lighthearted articles like this once in a while. It's a nice change from the usual kvetching that goes on.

On the hike back to the ferry terminal, Levitt and his friends were stopped by a police officer and learned that hiking at night on Catalina Island is apparently forbidden. Fortunately, the police officer was kind and merely escorted them back to the other side of the island.
Whaat??? What is wrong with California these days? Too many rules.

They're getting to experience nature, get exercise, utilize and develop their photography skills, and bond with friends. What're you doing with your free time?

I swear, this site and other Apple forums are frustratingly negative and I'm really getting sick of it.
Not just Apple forums. The internet in general is about negativity. Is there something about anonymity that brings the worst side of people.

I don't know man, I don't think it was always like this. I mean, it's one thing to complain about the Apple releases but I really don't understand the ********* that these guys get. And yes, I have a nine to five job where I drink coffee.

We can have nice things; but we should be productive with those things. Replicating pictures already taken is a loser's life. They should come up with their own artistry. Really, what's the point?

I understand the point about them not taking original pictures, but sometimes, recreating something someone else has done is a great way to learn. It's not like Apple posts Focal Length, ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed with the photos they use, or mention if filters were dropped in front of the lens. Experimenting with your own gear to try and replicate another picture might get you to understand some of those things and learn from that (even the pictures that didn't end up looking similar, you might find settings your preferred, or techniques you didn't know about before, or other ways to achieve the same effect that you could use in a different scenario)

Plus, like someone else said, that got them exposure for their youtube channel or for their photography they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Good PR.

They should get a job.

What's with all the "Get a job" comments... Haven't you heard about weekends, or vacations, or jobs with flexible hours?

Maybe these guys just like hiking and photography. There are so many places to hike everywhere you can't hit them all. So when something like this comes up it gives you a new idea of where to go and what your goal is.

I'm pretty sure these aren't the only pictures these guys ever take. I'm guessing hiking/photography is a big part of their lives and they just did this for fun.

Exactly. I'm into Landscape Photography, and Hiking (by extension... I probably wouldn't hike as much or at all if it wasn't for Photography. Gets me to exercice since I have a goal other than just getting up that mountain) If I had more sources for ideas of where to go in my region, I'd probably do it more often.
