The Department of Justice this week formally appealed a judge's order that blocks restrictions on TikTok by the U.S. government, according to a new court filing, in a continuation of the Trump administration's campaign against the short-form video sharing platform (via CNN).

Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols issued an order blocking the Department of Commerce's restrictions on TikTok, which would have prevented new downloads of the app from Apple and Google app stores. On Monday, the U.S. government appealed Nichols' decision, signaling Trump's intention to pursue the Chinese company into the last days of his presidency.

Trump's offensive against TikTok began in August when he signed an executive order that officially banned any U.S. transactions with TikTok if its Chinese parent ByteDance did not reach a deal to divest it to a U.S. company within 90 days. Commerce Department officials later said they were taking the unprecedented step of banning the app because of the risks posed by its data collection practices and Chinese ownership.

However, in September, Judge Nichols granted TikTok a preliminary injunction that temporarily halted the banning order while TikTok owner ByteDance sought a way to divest the app's U.S. operations to an American-based company.

ByteDance was later given a new deadline of December 4 to sell TikTok to a domestic U.S. company, but that deadline elapsed as talks continued with the U.S. government about a sale.

ByteDance is said to have reached a proposed deal with Oracle and Walmart that would divest it of the social media app and create a new U.S.-based company called TikTok Global, but that deal has not been finalized, and it remains unclear how the incoming administration would view the matter if it does not conclude before Trump leaves office.

Its a shame the judge blocked this. While it would set a bad precedent, screw TikTok. It needs to go the way of MySpace, and quickly.
Please explain why. Is it just simply because “you” don’t like it?
I personally don’t believe that the United States government should be able to block something just because certain members don’t like it.

Jeez only 22 more days of this.
I really don’t think so.
I mean, yes, it’s 22 days until “this” specific idiotic administration, and it’s cultish leader leaves the oval office.
But I feel like it’s going to be years and years before we truly go back to pre-2015 American politics.
I think that there are going to be ripple affects from this administration, that are going to affect us for years.
Also, sure, Trump was bad.
But he was also stupid, and loudmouthed, and idiotic, and posted his every thought, opinion, and future move on Twitter.
It could’ve been much, much worse. Imagine if we got a cult like personality in the oval office, who wasn’t an idiot, and who didn’t post their every whim on the Internet.

If the US government start to block websites and apps that don’t violate US law such as the copyright law, then wouldn’t this be just like the Chinese government’s infamous Great Firewall of China or GFW?

It’s a free country, we say.

It's ok, Sleepy Joe will allow China to run unchecked thruout the US.

After all, this is what he said about China.

"China is going to eat our lunch? Come on, man."

"They're not bad folks, folks. But guess what? They're not competition for us."
No he won't. And his name is Joe Biden (soon-to-be President Joe Biden).

But, Trump has allowed Russia to run unchecked for the past 4 years and that's OK with you?

He literally said that “China is not our adversary, Russia is, and China is our greatest competitor”.

Which I think is a fair assessment.

Don’t ban it! I want to see hard working doctors and nurses dance around the whole day.

Yep. I have seen some really “fancy” NHS nurse dances on TikTok, while the rest of the country was clapping at 8AM every Thursday for them. You can only imagine the rehearsal times the have consumed, when they had nothing better to do.

This fits. The administration has been lashing out recklessly in its final days, even at its own party. The judge ordering this makes sense until some level of proof can be shown about the risk to America at large by this company.

He couldn't be more wrong, if that's what he thinks...
Curious why you say that. While China is not a country with strong checks on its government and it definitely has some humanitarian issues Russia is outright aggressive. Russia attacked our government computer infrastructure just this month. On top of that it is run by an authoritarian dictator (in reality if not appearance) who had long wanted the destruction of this country because we won the Cold War.
