Trump's steel tariffs is why GM just laid off everyone.

Congratulations Trump voters, you played yourself.

The US economy is a globalist one that seeks open borders and free trade. The quicker you understand that, the better off you will be in this country.

Apple is doing exactly that by designing products by brilliant engineers in Silicon Valley, while having them built by cheaper, lower educated people in China.

If a person in China can build something for cheaper than in America, LET THEM - that is economic efficiency. An efficient economy will always win over an corrupt, inefficient one. Americans should only do jobs that only Americans can do, like high-end services jobs. Our economy is based on massive higher-education - the best in the world. No other country has a university system like ours, and we should take advantage of that.

We don't want Americans to perform manual labor that oxen can do. We only want engineers and scientists and artist - people that can create value with their minds.

New York, Silicon Valley and Hollywood are good examples of the kind of economy the US should be going forward.

A good example of complete economic failure is Russia - their economy is entirely based on selling things they find on the ground. When was the last time anyone bought something designed/made in Russia?

Western labour prices cannot compete with Chinese communist labour prices. Therefore, tariffs must be applied. A free, open market cannot compete with a slave market.

Knowing Apple, they will just increase their prices in the US to cover the extra tariff, and then increase the prices elsewhere in line with that in countries that don't have any tariffs. If the iPhone XS is increased to $1099, then I guarantee the UK price will increase to £1099 as well.

If the prices increases across the board in 2018 are any indication, I have no plans to buy replacements for my MBP '18 or XS Max for the foreseeable future. With or without the costs of the trade war
The ridiculous price increases that happened to the mbp in 2016 made me have zero plans to buy a new mbp. My late 2011 15" mbp was £1550. The 2018 15" mbp with just a 512GB hard drive is £2700. NOPE.

GM announced the factory closures due to Americans not interested in sedans. Ford announced they would stop making sedans in North America about half a year ago.

The only ones who get hurt by a politician's ego are the citizens. Ever since this whole trade war thing started, I've had to stop ordering from the US. I just couldn't afford it. Canada border services was slapping obscene taxes on everything.

As much as I hate to defend Trump, the main driving force behind GM doubling down on bigger vehicles and EVs has more to do with profitability than anything Trump has done/fumbled. U.S manufacturers have never been all that great at making smaller cars while smaller cars have been the bread and butter of their Japanese and European competitors. It's not about small cars not selling well, it's about GM not being all that great at making them and sales reflecting this reality.

In management slang what GM is doing is focusing on their "core competencies" and it's something Ford announced they were doing months ago. The plain english translation of this is that they're focusing on what you're actually good at.

As for China, they've always had some incredibly aggressive protectionist policies in place and continued with them even after they started opening up to the world under Deng Xiaoping. One of the best examples was how until recently if you wanted to set up manufacturing operations in the country you had to have an equal share partnership with a local company. Not only that, the foreign company had to perform pretty extensive technology transfer to this local partner company as part of setting up your Chinese operations.

Particularly in the early days this mean that some pretty dingy Chinese companies got a lot of technology and a good size chunk of manufacturing operations paid for almost completely by foreign companies. Not only did this help Chinese companies build up their manufacturing expertise, it also gave them access to huge amounts of western technology practically for free.

While Trump obviously isn't familiar with the specifics like this, he's not wrong about how China exploited western companies short term greed trough unfair trade policies to build up an asian superpower that realized the vast population and landmass of the country.

Just wanted to clarify that no, this is not nor will it be the reasons for that. GM's exorbitant spending on flops is why they are doing lay-offs. They're currently restructuring vehicles that nobody wants in order to produce vehicles people will want as well as doing R&E on electric and autonomous platforms. Same with Ford and FCA. For the last 3-4 years they've been freely spending towards new construction on unprofitable products and it's been biting them in the butt because people aren't interested in small tiny vehicles anymore they want the bigger ones.

You really have to be naive to think iPhone prices will increase by 10%. If this tariff happens, Tim Cook will increase prices by at least 20%. Even more for the rest of the world, even though these tariffs don't affect rest of the world. By why would TC waste a chance for more money grab if he sees one?
Apple does not lose anything they make there money and some by injecting the price to every single apple product, what you see on sale at apple is because it has been refurbished or returned.

Is that the same reason why Ford stop making some of their cars too? It's amazing how fast this company lost money and they just got bailed out before.

This is either ignorance or naïvety. Trump is trying to punish China for their business practices that blantantly take advantages of American companies. I don’t agree with these tariffs because I don’t think they will correct the problem but I get why he is doing it.

By making American consumers suffer? Winning!

I wish I could play poker with some of you MR posters. China has been screwing us because we were too afraid to call their bluffs. All you political gurus out there tell me how you would have gotten China to stop taking advantage of us.

I can't believe how gullible you all are. Trump threatened tariffs with Mexico. Do we have tariffs on Mexican goods? No. He threatened tariffs on Canada. And even made disparaging remarks about Canada. So what happened? We got a replacement for NAFTA that is much better for us.

China will sign a new trade deal that will be better for the US, but you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs.

You've been fed a bunch of Faux News Breitbart bull about this "taking advantage" crap. The same goes for the USMCA. Yes, a 23 year old trade agreement was long overdue for some updating, but if you think the USMCA is all sunshine and roses, you've been hoodwinked.

Welcome to the post-WWII global economy. Take some classes or just read some books on international political economy.

Oh, right, education is just a form of "liberal indoctrination."

There are effective ways to posture and negotiate with other global powers (that's what we adults call it--not "bluffing" when the stakes are this high). Acting like a bull in a China shop (pun slightly intended) is not among them.

I was willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt that all his nonsense might be part of some higher strategy. But after 2+ years, that's pretty clearly been debunked. He's just an idiot and a petulant child.

You people...

Tesla is the only company that's made EVs that actually LOOK GOOD. I don't know why other car makers can't follow their examples. They only want to make EVs that look like a Prius. Priuses are great cars but they don't inspire passion and excitement the way, say, a Challenger does. Make them cooler looking and more people will want them!
All the other companies try to design bland cars that the ordinary public will buy. Most restaurants serve plain, easy on the palate food rather than aim to please the 5%. This is the same. GM and Toyota want to design a car once, and have it sell millions. Tesla is happy selling thousands.

You know what is crazy about that last part of that sentence. Is i know a lot of ppl who are Trump supporters. Who will constantly support a policy that shoots them in the foot. Under the idea that at least they got to own the libs. Not knowing these policies sometimes are screwing these very ppl.

In fairness, Dems do counter-productive stuff too for the same reason. There's a bunch of ends-justify-the-means garbage on both sides.

Please no. Hollywood is exactly what we should not be going forward. The lack of ethics and morals in Hollywood should disturb everyone.

You talk about "Hollywood" as if it's some monolithic corrupt entity. That indicates you're completely missing what's actually going on. This is what economists and social scientists generally call "selection bias" combined with the "base rate fallacy." (Go look those terms up if you don't know what they mean.)

In any group (including just a random selection from the population), there will be bad apples. People in Hollywood are already famous, or at least tied to other famous people. Therefore, when the bad apples get uncovered in Hollywood, you're much more likely to hear about them.

Is the percentage of "bad people" in Hollywood worse than the general population? That's impossible to know for sure, but I'd speculate the answer is no—at least as it relates to what I know you mean when you say "ethics" and "morals." There's no reason why it would be.

I thought corps were considered citizens by scotus in a ruling

It is not something that applies to campaign finance laws. Corporate PACs are a thing and do give politically, but the funds from them are made from employee giving and not from the corporate treasury.

Corporations, foreign nationals, labor unions and government contractors are all prohibited from making federal political contributions.

If it's Tim Cook's own personal money, he is free to do with his money however he wants.

But if it's Apple's cash hoard, it's not Tim's Money. It belongs to the company and its investors and shareholders. Like me. I prefer that money stays apolitical.

If you don't like what the company is doing or direction it is heading, sell the stock. It's how it works, political or apolitical.

Personally, as a shareholder, I'd support the BOD if they move in that direction.

10% on what, the $1000 sale price or the $300 manufactured price? Either way, it probably wont convince Apple to manufacture in the US, it will just make us consumers pay that extra 10% with an increased sale price. As if the iPhones weren't expensive enough... Bring back the SE!
