Sorry for the garbage quality image but here's the notch on the Galaxy A53.

I can't imagine someone upgrading just for the pill... It appears to me that you aren't really saving any useable space over the 13 series notch. In fact I find it a bit more annoying than the notch because of the wasted useless space above the pill

But someone no doubt will. That’s what apple has become, a fashion sickness to some people.

The notch lovers saying this is not recognized as an apple phone anymore are funny.
the notch was never meant for brand recognition. It’s a limitation in hardware. When there is technology allowing for full screen phones with no cutouts you bet apple will be there with its non recognizable front display.

all apple needs is the back apple logo. That is all

Sorry I still preferred the hole punch
That sliver of gained screen real-estate doesn't seem very useful, i'm not entirely sure if this is a long-term design goal or just a transition to something else.
I really hate the term ‘screen real estate’ they started using. Such a buzz word/phrase but really meaningless

Exactly, now you will you have an orphaned piece of image above it

Honestly, a pill shape is the most incremental change possible. I cannot imagine who would consider this design change as a factor in deciding whether to upgrade.

I disagree with this. In the interim, it absolutely does help them. Especially if someone is sporting a case. Just by looking at the front of the screen, I can tell who has an iPhone. This was even true with the iPhone 6, 7. The same way I can tell a Mercedes is a Mercedes without always having to look at the logo.

The iPhone 14 Pro is expected to mark the beginning of the end for the notch on the iPhone, as it's expected to feature a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display. While we may be only days away from the launch of the new ‌iPhone‌, some users might be interested to get an early feel for what the new cutout will look like in person, and now you can do just that.

Despite plenty of concepts and leaks about the pill-shape notch replacement on the iPhone 14 Pro, there is nothing like seeing and feeling what it looks like right in your hand. Thanks to images created by concept designer Ian Zelbo, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max users can get a sense of how the iPhone 14 Pro with the new display cutout will look and feel in the hand.

Shared on Twitter, images include a rough estimate of what rumors suggest will be the size of the pill-shape on the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, respectively. The images are sized to allow iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max users to view their respective images full-sized, flip their phone, and get an early hands-on iPhone 14 Pro experience.

An image for the iPhone 13 Pro Max can be found below, and an iPhone 13 Pro image here (note that the image has a slightly wider aspect ratio based on leaked iPhone 14 Pro schematics).

While it may look like a single large pill-shaped cutout in the display, there are actually two cutouts in the physical display. Credible rumor suggests that Apple will digitally merge the pill-shape and hole-punch cutouts to create one larger pill shape at the top of the display. Apple is reportedly planning to use the space between the two physical holes to add useful information such as iOS privacy indicators, while a rumored redesign of the Camera app will wrap controls around the new cutout.

Every flagship iPhone since the iPhone X has featured a notch, with the iPhone XS, iPhone 11, and iPhone 12 all featuring the same sized notch. Apple made the notch smaller with the iPhone 13, and it's expected to move on completely from the notch design in just a few days. Other than the pill-shaped notch replacement, Apple is planning other significant new features for the high-end iPhone 14 models, including an always-on display, a 48MP camera, better battery life, and more.

Apple is widely expected to announce the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Pro, and an entirely new Apple Watch lineup during an event planned for Wednesday, September 7, with the tagline "Far Out." For a full rundown of everything we expect from Apple's fall event, check out our guide.

SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY THIS PILL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DISPLAY IS BETTER THAN HAVING A SIMILAR SIZED NOTCH AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN? IT GAINS NOTHING HAVVING IT SURROUNDED PIXELS AS THE ONES ABOVE THE PILL ARE USELESS.

Since it no longer is a pill and hole design (which I stronger disagreed with and said would not happen) but just a pill design then why not move it higher up and call it a well, notch? The tiny area above the pill is worthless and looks weird. I am not a big fan of the notch but it's a more elegant design than this floating pill.

Stop being logical and pointing out the fact that this provides no more useful area than it being a notch. It's different and new therefore it's better. IMHO this is worse than the notch but at least it's not a pill and hole which was a really really bad idea.

Personally, I think that “pill” cutout is absolutely no better than the notch.
It’s not so much to be “better” which of course is subjective to every individual on the planet, but for Apple it’s about standing out with a new design while also reducing the cost which may be the primary reason for the new design.

Big disappointment for those wanting to upgrade. It worsens the problem by taking up more real estate further down, and thus adding wasted space above it.

Apple needs to be more forward-thinking than this. I came from Android 4 months ago. The switch has its positives, but also it’s negatives. The growing antiquated look to the hardware is one negative. This release makes Apple look bad. Just plain honest. Will run my used 11Pro into the ground, then reconsider Android if Apple doesn’t get its act together.

No longer a leader or innovator in anything but CPUs, Apple is in danger of becoming viewed as the old man being dragged kicking and screaming into adopting what Samsung and others have made available for years.

Hmmm.

It’s a cleaner design aesthetically.

But it seems less functional. It hangs too low. Needs to be thinner. Seems slightly more likely to get in the way. Overall it’s not much smaller than the notch.

I give it three “mehs” out of five.

Why do you think apple needs recognition on the front of the screen? they won’t sell more phones because of it. It’s for people showing up saying hey look at me I have an iPhone without turning over your phone.

it’s really not needed. Either you have an iPhone or you don’t. No need to flaunt it and they don’t do it for brand recognition.

The moment technology allows for no cutouts on the front of the screen apple will be there. Will you complain about it not looking “apple like”?

Apple will sell just as many phones when that happens. I’d imagine more will be sold to the people that want full screen phone without any cutouts.
