This has to be the most boring update, there seems to be more focus on the pill than the minor incremental improvements. Bring on the iPhone 16 pro max the first real steps to a full screen iphone.

The iPhone 14 Pro is expected to mark the beginning of the end for the notch on the iPhone, as it's expected to feature a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display. While we may be only days away from the launch of the new ‌iPhone‌, some users might be interested to get an early feel for what the new cutout will look like in person, and now you can do just that.

Despite plenty of concepts and leaks about the pill-shape notch replacement on the iPhone 14 Pro, there is nothing like seeing and feeling what it looks like right in your hand. Thanks to images created by concept designer Ian Zelbo, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max users can get a sense of how the iPhone 14 Pro with the new display cutout will look and feel in the hand.

Shared on Twitter, images include a rough estimate of what rumors suggest will be the size of the pill-shape on the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, respectively. The images are sized to allow iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max users to view their respective images full-sized, flip their phone, and get an early hands-on iPhone 14 Pro experience.

An image for the iPhone 13 Pro Max can be found below, and an iPhone 13 Pro image here (note that the image has a slightly wider aspect ratio based on leaked iPhone 14 Pro schematics).

While it may look like a single large pill-shaped cutout in the display, there are actually two cutouts in the physical display. Credible rumor suggests that Apple will digitally merge the pill-shape and hole-punch cutouts to create one larger pill shape at the top of the display. Apple is reportedly planning to use the space between the two physical holes to add useful information such as iOS privacy indicators, while a rumored redesign of the Camera app will wrap controls around the new cutout.

Every flagship iPhone since the iPhone X has featured a notch, with the iPhone XS, iPhone 11, and iPhone 12 all featuring the same sized notch. Apple made the notch smaller with the iPhone 13, and it's expected to move on completely from the notch design in just a few days. Other than the pill-shaped notch replacement, Apple is planning other significant new features for the high-end iPhone 14 models, including an always-on display, a 48MP camera, better battery life, and more.

Apple is widely expected to announce the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Pro, and an entirely new Apple Watch lineup during an event planned for Wednesday, September 7, with the tagline "Far Out." For a full rundown of everything we expect from Apple's fall event, check out our guide.

Yea that’s god awful.

Stop being logical and pointing out the fact that this provides no more useful area than it being a notch. It's different and new therefore it's better. IMHO this is worse than the notch but at least it's not a pill and hole which was a really really bad idea.
Yea it’s worse than a notch. The pill cut out feels like it should have come BEFOR the notch. Yea I have a 12 Pro Max. Literally zero reason to upgrade. None.

The "pill" seems like it saves very little screen real estate vs. the "notch" on the current models, and it also isn't all that recognizable which one you're using if someone glances at the device in passing (which eliminates the "it" factor for getting the newest models).

I'm not entirely clear what Apple is accomplishing (or even attempting to accomplish) with this design change unless there are plans for some behind the scenes wizardry enabled by this that hasn't been leaked yet.
I was thinking the same. Apple usually only changes design if they genuinely believe that it’ll make the phone better. This actually looks to land even further from the edge of the phone than the notch on iPhone X-12. If it’s too centered, it will be more disturbing.

I mean, which screen real estate is the most important? The slim space between pill and edge or the space from pill towards the center of the display?

If Steve Jobs were still around, there would probably have never been a notch, screen with rounded edges, nor pill-shaped cutout.

Guessing the behind the scene components are too large to accommodate that. Still better than a full notch IMO at least.

I don't think this is better than the notch.

This will be the easiest iPhone for those copycat companies to mimic. That triple wide pill is easier to fake on a display than the notch.

The notch lovers saying this is not recognized as an apple phone anymore are funny.
the notch was never meant for brand recognition. It’s a limitation in hardware. When there is technology allowing for full screen phones with no cutouts you bet apple will be there with its non recognizable front display.

all apple needs is the back apple logo. That is all
iPhone is remembered for its fugly camera bump.

So, trivially different to the notch.

Nonetheless, brace for a bombardment of posts claiming it’s life changing, or worse, that the notch is “obsolete”.

The space above the pill is obviously the best place to put the battery percentage. What else would that tiny space fit? ;)

Looks like my next upgrade will be a cheap IPhone 13 in two years. I shall bypass this screen-robbing pill look.

Since it no longer is a pill and hole design (which I stronger disagreed with and said would not happen) but just a pill design then why not move it higher up and call it a well, notch? The tiny area above the pill is worthless and looks weird. I am not a big fan of the notch but it's a more elegant design than this floating pill
I think the pill gives the look and feel of a truly seamless all-edge screen.
