I think GPS and speakers are more wishful thinking than actual rumors. I don't think an official source such as MacRumors has ever posted claims by so called "people in the know" regarding GPS and speakers. I think it's just people saying they want those things.

There has actually been 1 report that GPS is coming, but it is unsubstantiated at this point.

IMO - I really can't see them putting GPS in the Touch. What I imagine will happen is we will see cheaper prices ($199 for 8GB and $299 for 16GB) and perhaps some additional features. Like maybe a speaker and perhaps a camera. Basically what I see the Touch is - an iPhone like device for people who for one reason or another can not convert to AT&T. But GPS would not be very useful unless you had access to Maps while in your car and that requires a phone connection.

Or unless you had maps stored locally as with any portable navigation device. Tom Tom data takes about 1GB.

Every rumor there is, no matter the source, is unsubstantiated until the products are released.

Yet there are a few hundred members here that already "know" what a new touch won't have.

And for every one of those experts that "know", there are other experts that "know" something contrary.

Genious, all of you!

Me? I'll wait and see.

what good is gps without gmaps cached? and you really think they will let you have a gmaps app? i doubt it.

Many think a dedicated gps app could be released soon, and it is certainly plausible. The iPod touch has plenty of room to store maps.

Well, obviously we all have to wait and see. ;)

But more often than not, real info is leaked before a new major Apple product or revision is presented. The closer to the actual event, the more likely we'll get good information. Everything from the Intel switch to the Mac Mini to the iPod Shuffle and original Nano (and more) has been leaked prior to the actual launch.

Usually at some point you can put 2 and 2 together, and figure out which reports are reasonable and which aren't. It's just interesting to try to speculate what Apple is going to do next.

LOL!

I wonder how much a GPS chip costs nowadays. If it is cheap enough, I could really see them adding it to the Touch and announcing a new GPS the same day.

I think it's at least 50/50 that SOME new feature gets added to the Touch, especially with the prominence of the App Store. One clue might be to look at the App Store and see what apps are more popular- photo or GPS, or maybe apps that work better with a speaker (mainly games.)

But with the prominence of cameras on even dumb phones, that might favor the prospects of a GPS. People pay $150 and more for dedicated GPS devices for their car, Apple can add that feature to the iPod Touch for like $10 (or whatever the cost of a GPS chip is.)
