The best solution is just don't log into Google or any other search engine. I use gmail but only through the mail app and don't log into Google. I rarely use Google+ as it is just a ghost town compared to Facebook. Speaking of Facebook I don't upload every little detail of my life. So am I anonymous on the net, no. And other than unplugging the computer from the rest of the world you will never be.

Meh, let Google, Apple and whoever else snoop. What are they gonna find out about me? I bought a CD on Tuesday, I visit a few forums, on Facebook I told the world that I was enjoying the sun and on Twitter I told the world the possible title of my next book.

Who cares?

I just registered a trademark with the possible title of your next book. Please change it within 2 weeks or you will recieve a letter from my lawyer.

By the way I work at a sun-lotion company, since we have your e-mail address through google we will spam you with sun-lotion advertising for the next couple of weeks. And a friend of mine at the health care system says since you enjoy the sun you may have a bigger risc of getting skin cancer, so they will raise the amount of money you have to pay.

You are right, who cares?

Honestly, this technology offers such great potential of misuse, one should not be indifferent to it.

Think about how you are solving your problem. You're just switching from one data mongerer (Google) to another (Apple). The net effect is zero.

Not quite.

If we can reduce google's market share from teh current 80+ percent, to somewhere nearer 50/50 with someone else, or ideally bring a few other players to market, they will (all) be kept a bit more honest.

At least apple's services are payware - you pay up front rather than with them data mining you.

edit:
am aware of iAds, but its not quite teh same as selling your info to the highest third party bidder...
