He lost his job for stealing the iPad, not because he returned it. The news had all the proof they needed and things could've gone a lot worse for him had he not returned it voluntarily.
In no way am I condoning his actions of taking the iPad, but how could things have gone a lot worse for had he not returned it voluntarily? He denies taking it, closes the door to the reporter, then takes a hammer and smashes the iPad to smithereens. End of story.

Personally I don't think this guy learned a lesson about not stealing, but at least other travelers' belongings won't be at risk with him on the job.

He should have just closed the door after being accused, turned off the iPad, and drove away with it to get rid of. Then it would be his word vs the shows word.

Cringe-worthy. While I feel bad for him, don't be a dick.

Why would you feel bad or him?
Guys like him are why your stuff disappears from your suitcase when you travel.
Would you feel bad if it had been your iPad that went missing?

Did he make a stupid decision? Absolutely. Sadly, too many people make bad choices. The big difference here, (and why I feel bad for him) is that his mistake has been broadcasted for all to see. He's going to have a long difficult road to get another job. And while he deserves the mess, his family does not.

On the one hand I do feel sorry for the guy because no matter where he goes it will be 'Oh, you're the guy who stole the iPad'. On the other hand, I am surprised that people just get fired for this: Shouldn't theft be prosecuted? If some homeless person stole an iPad, they'd get jail time.

We need to GET RID OF TSA AND BRING BACK PRIVATE SECURITY! This is stupid! Never had any issues like this when we had private security. Government security is a JOKE.

</politcal rant>

P.S... Good to know Find my iPhone can recover something if setup right, with the right restrictions in iOS in place :)

You're joking right?
It was way worse when there was private security.
How do you think 9/11 happened?

Haha yeah. It appears though that at 2:12, when he is handing back the iPad tot he reporter, she is telling him "I found it," presumably because she doesn't want her husband to be questioned or fired. That whole confrontation is uncomfortable to watch.

And if an employee finds something they should turn it into the lost and found.

Terrorists highjacked some airplanes with empty bomb threats?

65 year old mother was able to recover her iPhone via Find My Phone in a major metropolitan area with the help of the police.

Wasn't a believer in it until that happened.

Terrorists highjacked some airplanes with empty bomb threats?

Yeah. After they got through security with box cutters.

How old are you.
I don't ask this trying to belittle you. Just wondering how old you were at the time.

'Terror' is stripping away every liberty we had. When you can't even pack toothpaste in your bag you know the entire system is out. The Government has over-extended its authority by not trusting the very people it works for.

My wife worked at the Vancouver airport in security before we moved to LA 5 years ago.
She said you would be shocked the things they catch, that the public doesn't hear about.
And if you know anything about explosives, then you would understand the reasons for limiting what you can bring in your carry on, and why it's limited to how much.

Personally, I'll happily have those rules enforced.
Taking off my shoes is a small price to pay, for not getting blown out of the sky.

And if the idea of limited government strikes you as a good thing, take a trip to Somalia. See how you like it.

You reinforced my statement. The Government doesn't trust the people it works for.

And I'm happy they don't.
I think there is proof enough as to why they shouldn't.

We shudl get rid of all police as well.
And dismantle the army, since there are no bad people in the world.

Yeah. And just like magic it didn't play.
Just like magic,it said I needed to download fash.

Did you actually try it? It works. The iOS version of YouTube does not use Flash.

----------

I loved the thief's response to the reporter saying that he was caught on video holding the iPad and that the iPad had been tracked. Totally baffled. That was hilarious! More news agencies should do this to scare these guys into not stealing.

----------

I haven't been able to use the YouTube website on my iPad 3 for a week. I get a "You must have Adobe Flash installed" across the video.

Supposedly, Google changed their page video embedding coding last week to thwart bypassing ads. I haven't been able watch videos via the website since.

Maybe this has to do with Click2Plugin and my YouTube downloader not working? I think it was for a few days. Click2Plugin normally plays the YouTube videos in QuickTime Player for me to avoid ads and throttling. It wasn't working, and now it does work.

----------

I'm glad he got fired. I hope he isn't collecting unemployment benefits.

I think unemployment benefits are only if you are laid off, not fired. I'm not sure if I'm correct.

Yeah. After they got through security with box cutters.

It is still possible to get prohibited items through security. The TSA has not changed that. People do it all the time to show how it's just security theater.

The only useful post-9/11 change has been the locking and reinforcement of cockpit doors.

And theft was a huge problem back in the day. Suitcases ripped open, items disappearing.

Anybody over 30 can attest to that.
That is, if they actually did any major flying when they were about 14.

zero tolerance on theft, the way it's supposed to be.

Yes.

----------

The comments on the video were painfully ignorant. Stuff like "Blck Ppl Alwyz steel". The guy's last name is "Ramirez", and he's clearly Hispanic. And then there was stuff like "d00d Send thoose Illegall mexcans back ovr teh border". He's probably a legal immigrant if he's working as a TSA officer, and he's not necessarily Mexican.

Actually, you have to be a citizen to work fr he TSA.
I looked it up.

----------

What's your point? That the establishment of the TSA directly led to less theft?

I find that very hard to believe.

Yes, actually, it did.
Private securities with zero accountability, and contracts going to the lowest bidder, was the problem.

This is why I put complex passwords on my devices, so no one gets into it.

DFU restore would solve that small problem.

And just so you guys know, you don't have to take iPad's out at TSA checkpoints. Only laptops.
