Just drag it out of your dock... (after following the above advice to manually close all widgets and turn of any hot corners...) and you'll never see or notice dashboard ever again... :)
 
No Dashboard

turn off:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES

turn on:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO
 
I am very surprised nobody mentioned it yet but here is the Ultamate Dashboard Software

Here is a concise list of what it does:

- It allows you to disable and enable Dashboard
- It allows Widgets to run on the desktop outside of Dashboard
- It allows you to take how ever many Widgets you want out of the Dashboard and on to the Desktop (and you can put as many as you want back)
- It allows you to change the Widget dock's background
- It has a few security options
- It is also a Widget manager
