To save battery life, but we do not know how well the battery life with it on is with the new iPhone, plus if you do not have LTE in your area no since in having it on anyway.

Doesn't the specs say that it's 10hr (or 8hr I'm too lazy to look it up) for both 3G and LTE surfing?

----------

I still do not get it.

If I have to download 350k of data, no matter what it is, I will be charged for 350k of data. Could be LTE, GSM,2g 3g edge or whatever you want to call it.

If you need to watch your data, then watch what programs you are running.

Lets say you enjoy just browsing the internet for stuff to look at... aimlessly with no purpose, just to kill time.

Normally you go to Website A and then B, C, D etc.

But normally Website A takes 30 seconds to load, but now with LTE it takes 15 seconds to load so you get there 15 seconds faster and therefore you're onto Website B faster and then C, D and then maybe E,F,G and H. The amount of data you've consumed on ABCD is the same but now you've added pages EFGH to it as well, essentially doubling your data in half the time it would have taken you to previously.

"iPad LTE Issue" brings up a whole slew of hits. I remember reading about it in passing right after launch. I don't own the appropriate model to have any input beyond that though.
I've got the IP3 and it's always shown a max 3G connection to AT&T here in suburban Philadelphia.

However, I noticed over the past week or so the signal strength dropped to 1 bar. At first I thought maybe a hardware problem but then I found out the other day that Philly just went LTE on AT&T. I checked the LTE setting on the iPad and it was ON. When I turned LTE off the signal strength popped back up to maximum. I'm thinking this may be due to me being far enough away from the city to barely get the LTE signal, and, with LTE enabled, the iPad isn't showing the connection strength -- it's showing the LTE signal strength. Or, maybe when LTE is enabled on the iPad it's not reading any connection other than LTE? Puzzled.

Anyway, if there's a switching issue I hope it's fixed in OS6.

with it reestablishing connection? everything i found with "ipad lte issues" is stuff about it not being global, issues with europe, issues exposing roaming, etc. one was about 3g connectivity.

Im just curious about what problems people are having. He said resestablishing connection. he means from turning it off in settings and coming back on right?

The problem was partially fixed with a carrier update, but basically the new ipad was not re-connecting to either 3G, 4G, or LTE when the LTE toggle was on. Turning off LTE fixed the issue, but this rendered ipads outside the US useless for quite a while since they do not have the toggle. I still keep mine off unless I need something big or am streaming video. Here are a few of the larger threads:

None of AT&T's smartphones have the option to turn off 3G or 4G LTE.

That's not been my experience.
All my AT&T iPhones since the 3G have had the option to disable 3G in the settings. Same for my 1st gen iPad. I can turn off LTE on my AT&T iPad 3 also.

3G sort of *IS* the new EDGE. As new technology comes in, the oldest tech gets phased out.

Providers don't want you on GSM/EDGE (2G) anymore. They are slowly phasing out their 2G networks to free up spectrum for 3G and LTE. Every device still using 2G makes it harder for them to do this.

As spectrum currently being used for 2G is repurposed for 3G, 2G performance will get worse and 3G will improve. At some point providers will kill 2G entirely, requiring anyone with an older 2G-only phone to upgrade.

Truth. My iPhone 2G sucks arse these days when it used to get EDGE everywhere.
