How often do you actually turn off your phone (and/or iPad) rather than just putting it to sleep? Do you ever turn off your phone?

That question occurred to me the other day along with wondering about other habits I’ve seen other people have…or not.

I do turn off my phone periodically when I give it a good clean and to give it a restart. I do this about once a week or two. Ditto with my iPad. But I’ve wondered how many actually do that.

Another habit I have is regular deleting of emails and photos. I have seen people’s phones with literally hundreds or more old emails or photos they admit they have no real use for. For myself once I have read or answered an email I either delete it or send it to Saved or Archive if I think I might have to refer back to it. And periodically I go into those folders to clean them out. But I’ve met people who even claimed they don’t how to delete emails! WTF? One guy’s phone had over 3100 emails he said he didn’t know what to do with. I told him he either had to sort through them or just select all and delete to be done with it.

Photos are another thing. I’m not much for taking photos unless it’s it’s something I really want or need for the moment or temporarily (like for work). As such I am regularly deleting unneeded photos. But, of course, I’ve seen people with hundreds to thousands of photos on their phone or tablet and usually not sorted in any way whatsoever. It’s funny seeing them try to scroll furiously through countless photos desperately trying to find one pic they know is in there somewhere.

I also have a habit of closing apps that I’m not regularly using rather than leaving everything open in the background.

Anyone else?

My habits are pretty much in line with yours.
I call it maintenance.

I do hard reboot my Apple Devices at least once a month (thinking iPhone/Watch).

I am pretty selective on what I save when it comes to emails (90%+ goes to trash). I have 3.8GB of emails (about 120k total) since I started saving emails back in the 5MB Yahoo days.

However, when it comes to Photos, I see those are more of a "picture is worth 1000 words" - and I have:

It's about 123.85GB. About 15k of those are from the days when I had a DSLR so... it's a lot more than it really is. I used to be a hobbyist photographer - had a Flickr account and even got a few of my photos used by journalists/news articles. I use photos as a way to remember the day and share information. If I work hard at something, I'll snap a photo of it, etc.

I never turn off the devices. I only restart my iPhone 13 Pro Max when it's neccesary for an update. Other than that, it keeps running since launch day flawlessly. Same for my Apple Watch Ultra.

Also I don't really delete photos - I only archive them. Unless it's really garbage or a screenshot I don't need anymore. Same thing for emails.

I do the…opposite of everything you do. It's all left there. There is one exception and that is either spam email or email offers I won't use.

Some things as to why I do not delete/maintain/clean out.

- In the early days of email you had limits. I never emailed enough to hit the limit. But over the years a lot of email providers (including my ISP) kept increasing the limits. I have several email accounts and I give people/business a particular email account based on what I expect from them. I still have never hit the limit.

Periodically there is a need to search emails. One account contains my serial numbers and license keys for some apps I bought. I've needed to search for it before because I didn't do what I should have the first time and copied/downloaded that stuff.

I have a business email from my employer. Having not deleted emails has saved my butt a few times. Additionally, those are all property of the company and they provide a record. I'm not deleting a business record.

- I come from a time period where landlines were always live. Unless you did not wish to be disturbed, no one in that time period went to bed with the phone off the hook or unplugged and even if they did that did not mean the phone line was shut down overnight.

I go to bed with my phones on, screens off and plugged in. My primary phone is plugged in and serves as a bedside clock at night as well. Someone mentioned that bad news can wait until the morning. That isn't me and I want family/friends to be able to get a hold of me at need.

- Photos…unless it's really stupid, I just leave it. While I have over 6500 photos they are all backed up anyway and I'm not talking solely iCloud. My photos go to Dropbox and get backed up because they end up on my Macs (because, Dropbox). I could lose every photo off my iPhone today and there is a backup for it on my Mac, on Dropbox, or on my NAS.

- I used to be religious about closing apps. Then I stopped caring. I haven't noticed a difference.

- Last but not least, whenever I buy an iPhone, I buy the maximum capacity Apple offers for that model. Currently, I have the 512GB iPhone 11 Pro Max. I also have a 2TB iCloud sub and I use IMAP for email and Dropbox for photos. Music is stored on my NAS and accessed through an app on the phone. So, given so much storage there's no real need for me to go and delete stuff.

I completely turn off my phone every night when I go to bed. No point in keeping it on. Any potential bad news or pointless calls can wait until morning.

My unneeded WhatsApp messages are deleted daily as are my emails.
I rarely get pointless calls at night, but having an elderly mother I wish to be able to receive phone calls from my sister if that happens. We've always left our phones on for emergencies. Additionally what happens if YOU need to call 911? There you are waiting for your phone to boot so you can make an emergency call…if the phone is even near you or you can find it easily in the dark.

I wouldn't have wanted to hear that my father had died while I was sleeping and not open to taking bad news. It didn't happen that way, but it very easily could have.

I like to delete emails, messages and photos as soon as I don't need them any more. I take pictures and screenshots of geek bench scores and things as a reminder instead of using the reminder app lol, if I don't take care of it regularly it can get a bit messy.

In regard to turning things off im not very good at it as im always using my iPhone and mbp, my mbp has been on for nearly 3 weeks now and it really only gets a restart when new software gets installed that needs the MacBook to restart, same really with my iPhone.

Both get cleaned every 2 weeks at least.

I have way too much 'on' to be spending time powering it up each day, LOL!

And then the sequencing, OMG, because certain stuff is expecting other stuff to already be on when it powers up.

And no backups going off! :D
Completely understandable with a rig like that! Mine is just a random cluster of assorted electronics...

I have a Mac Mini (sitting on top of the G4 in the image you are referring to) that acts as a 'download' server. All of my Macs have their download folders pointed to that Mini's hard drive. So, if that Mini is not up first there may be hangs during login for all the other Macs. Just one example.

Mass storage is cheap. Everything is saved, including more than 60k photos; only true junk is deleted. The entire set of data across devices provides a complex contemporaneous frame of reference used constantly in my consulting business. Useful in court as well (those like certain corrupt pols probably should not follow this protocol...).

All devices are set to sleep fairly quickly, but it has been years since IMO it has made sense to turn devices all the way off. Devices get rebooted once a week or so just out of principle. And in the old days I avoided updating OS versions when possible, but today's Mac OS versions are solid enough that all devices are kept OS-current.

I leave my phones (iPhone 14 PM and Pixel 6 Pro) on all the time. They only restart to apply/install an update. However, on the 14 PM I've had janky scrolling to where I've had to restart to resolve that issue. Did not experience this issue on the 13 PM.

I keep my email inbox clean and only have emails that I need to do something with left in my inbox. After I no longer need them they go into the Archive folder. Or, if it's spam/junk I'll just delete.

For organizing photos on iPhones I've found that the Photos app isn't very good for me. I prefer to organize to folders and it's hard to tell if I have "filed" a photo into an album/folder. Ideally I'd like them all to go to the main folder and then let me move them out of that main folder. I don't really take a lot of photos and this may be part of the reason why I don't.

One of my reasons for jailbreaking was a tweak that allowed you to actually use folders inside the Camera app. Apple considers albums/folders to simply be 'pointers' to the original images, a shortcut. So this is why you can't move images into actual folders (removing them from the Camera Roll).

It's unfortunate but Apple has refused to change it. Out of my contempt for this decision I do not create albums or folders and leave everything in one place.

if storage were as expensive like eg 20 years ago - but it's not.
the only photos I delete are the ones that are "bad" quality (eg out of focus). For me all my photos have some memory I want to preserve ...
as for email, I delete some but keep others ...

I keep my iPhone clean just like you, black wallpaper, only essential files and apps, saves much time.

I would love a simple filter on the camera roll that excludes photos in Albums!
