Going in to turn it off is more of a hassle. 🙂

I saw someone's laptop the other day, and thought those 15k unread emails were bad, I stand corrected. 🙂

I haven’t turned off my iPhone in years. Between kids and a family business that’s not possible. That will happen the day I’m in my grave and I’m no longer required on this earth. Do not disturb goes on from 10pm-6 am but I have my important people (mom/dad/kids) on my list.

I do too. My kids are out with friends and I need to be there if they need me. We don’t have a home phone either, so if family need to get a hold of me, I want to be there. The only time I turn it off is when I have an issue or an update.

I do hard reboot my Apple Devices at least once a month (thinking iPhone/Watch).

I am pretty selective on what I save when it comes to emails (90%+ goes to trash). I have 3.8GB of emails (about 120k total) since I started saving emails back in the 5MB Yahoo days.

However, when it comes to Photos, I see those are more of a "picture is worth 1000 words" - and I have:

It's about 123.85GB. About 15k of those are from the days when I had a DSLR so... it's a lot more than it really is. I used to be a hobbyist photographer - had a Flickr account and even got a few of my photos used by journalists/news articles. I use photos as a way to remember the day and share information. If I work hard at something, I'll snap a photo of it, etc.

Not to be outdone.

however, my library size is around 600GB.
I don’t personally spend much time organising those photos. Only favorite ones I might want to check later every now and then. The rest is handled by “smart collections” in photos app.

I also (partly due to my OCD) ensure that I always have 0 unread emails and texts. I glanced at my best friend's phone and noticed his 3,000 unread emails and 500 unread texts and it gave me major anxiety. 😓 I don't see how people live like that!

Closing apps regularly is a muscle memory habit for me. I've been told that it doesn't actually do anything to speed up the phone, but I'm so accustomed to it, I doubt I'll ever stop doing it.

It’s not that important to living. Just ignore it. There are far more important things in life to worry about, than few icons on phone showing unread messages.

It's not difficult for me to do--I would only consider ignoring it if I found I wasn't able to keep up with my messages and texts, but I am. Maybe I don't receive as many as some people, but keeping them all at 0 does ensure that I read everything (and if I'm getting too many emails, then I start unsubscribing from mailing lists).

I always close everything. In what world is closing apps bad for the phone? I close everything beside I don’t want to scroll through 800 apps to find which one I want. I only keep a few open that I’m working with. I don’t understand where people get these ideas.

I don't know. I've seen people say to me that you don't need to do it and it might impact phone performance.

It doesn't affect anything regarding the phone's performance. iOS is highly optimized and when a million apps are open, it's very good at "freezing" them in a suspended state until you go back to them. The only thing it may affect is battery life because it takes more energy to close and then reopen an app than it does to leave it suspended. However, if there are apps that use Background App Refresh and you never close that app, it will chew through the battery. But I'm doing a million things with a million apps all day long and close them all and I charge my phone every two days on my 14 Pro Max. I've not noticed any significant hit on my battery leaving them open or closing them. Neither of these practices are "bad" for the phone. YMMV.

How often do you actually turn off your phone (and/or iPad) rather than just putting it to sleep? Do you ever turn off your phone?

That question occurred to me the other day along with wondering about other habits I’ve seen other people have…or not.


I do turn off my phone periodically when I give it a good clean and to give it a restart. I do this about once a week or two. Ditto with my iPad. But I’ve wondered how many actually do that.

Another habit I have is regular deleting of emails and photos. I have seen people’s phones with literally hundreds or more old emails or photos they admit they have no real use for. For myself once I have read or answered an email I either delete it or send it to Saved or Archive if I think I might have to refer back to it. And periodically I go into those folders to clean them out. But I’ve met people who even claimed they don’t how to delete emails! WTF? One guy’s phone had over 3100 emails he said he didn’t know what to do with. I told him he either had to sort through them or just select all and delete to be done with it.

Photos are another thing. I’m not much for taking photos unless it’s it’s something I really want or need for the moment or temporarily (like for work). As such I am regularly deleting unneeded photos. But, of course, I’ve seen people with hundreds to thousands of photos on their phone or tablet and usually not sorted in any way whatsoever. It’s funny seeing them try to scroll furiously through countless photos desperately trying to find one pic they know is in there somewhere.

I also have a habit of closing apps that I’m not regularly using rather than leaving everything open in the background.

No, I don't fail to grasp that. You're on a micro level concerning disk storage. We are discussing a macro level of organization, i.e, where the pointer is actually stored in a folder heiarchy.

If I move an image on my Mac from folder A to folder B then the image 'exists' in folder B and is not pointed to for the contents of folder A. If I copy an image from folder A to folder B then I have two pointers to the same image.

But within the Camera app on an iDevice, Apple only allows the representation of a copy - not a move. Thus a pointer exists in both a folder/album AND the Camera Roll (or All Photos). Both point to the same place, but you can't get rid of the one in the Camera Roll unless you actually want to delete it - and deleting it there also deletes the pointer in the folder/album.

This topic has always interested me as I have found some people who cannot grasp that a photo can be in multiple different folders at once. I can only assume it’s because some people see moving a digital file from one folder to another is the equivalent of moving a physical file from one folder to another where there’s only one file and it can only exist in one place.

I think the problem is not that people do not grasp this, it’s that they don’t like it

I suppose the issue is that somewhere has to be the master repository for photos, either the camera roll or the folder structure. At this point in time Apple has picked the camera roll to act as the master repository.

Better that than charging your phone, watch and perhaps iPad on your bed side table while you sleep. I am no scientist but I prefer not to have that going on so close to my head 8 hours a night, 365 nights a year.

A question not just for you but all others with huge numbers of unread emails. If any contain urgent or important information it is likely too late for you to do anything about it. Why not bulk delete them?
