Last I checked their 3Mbps plan would cost me $35 or $40 per month. It varies wildly from region to region. My father, on the other side of the country, pays around $55 for 25 down (I forget upload bandwidth) with Comcast...

You're right their faster plans are only marginally more expensive, but it's just an extra expense that I would feel bullied into paying.

Ugh.

My youngest daughter lives in another town, which has fibre optic cable, 250 Mbs for €50 per month.

For my sake, I hope you're putting a big B in there to describe little b speeds. Cuz a 720Mbps internet connection alongside all the other stuff you're getting for $135 a month is obscene, and makes me jealous.

Sorry for the confusion they should have been little "b"

FFS, I know we get nickle-and-dimed over here, but this is getting absurd.

I remember when I had a 28kb telephone modem, then a 56kb, we got broardband cable in 1998.

You know the worse of it, you get used to to it very quickly, I've heard my daughter complain about how long it takes to download a movie.

Hehehe, yes I remember getting a 9600bps modem and loving the speed.

I remember our first image we downloaded, my daughter and I waited in front of the computer for 37 minutes, while a photo was sent from Australia.

My then third wife got bored and went of for a coffee.

I remember when I got my first computer. All my other computer owning friends had janky 14.4 modems, while I was kicking it in style with a 56k. They were all amazed that I was downloading consistently at 5.2k a seconds.

I was getting songs in, like, 15 minutes! That's lightning fast!

...nowadays I get all cantankerous if my download speeds drop below 2 meg a second.

On a side note, I once tried to explain to my granddaughters that in the past we didn't have a remote for the TV. I could tell that they thought that I had lost my mind, but they were polite enough not to mention it.;)

I don't have any grandkids yet that I'm aware of, but the TV my parents had when I was a kid didn't have a remote until we bought a VCR when I was 6. You're not that old. :p

Oh, and we also only got three channels on it. 5 if the wind wasn't blowing.

No I'm not, 70 is the new 50, I keep telling myself.:p

Yeah, I keep telling myself 30's are the new 20's. Apparently some things don't change with wisdom. :p

I never said that I'm wise.:p

You are as young as you feel.

That is going to be tested on the 28th May.

I bought tickets, Meet & Greet for Ariana Grande for my granddaughters, I've since been told by my daughter that she cannot take them, so guess what, I've been nominated as guardian. I will not be going into the concert it's self, but I 've got to get them to Amsterdam, and the Ziggo Dome, and pick them up afterwards.

I also notice that your avatar is upholding it's Second Amendment rights.

I'm 62 and my wife is 57 and we complain about the little old silver haired couple driving 30 in a 45 mph zone. Those would be some of the 70 or 80 year olds, but I'm sure that's not anyone in this thread. :D

I recently learned that Ariana Grande is now old enough to buy and drink beer, so I say enjoy yourself!

Yup, and is raising Autism Awareness. I'm armed and dangerous, but I have a social conscious.

Huntn, I don't think there is a way to stay current on premium channel shows (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc.) without a subscription unless you are willing to illegally download them. As you already know, with Netflix, Hulu, or other streaming sources you can see some of them if you are willing to be one or more seasons behind. Like another poster mentioned it looks like some of the premium networks are heading in the direction of independent access/membership to their "on demand" apps but pricing is unknown at this point.

I'm not sure about Showtime or Cinemax, but HBO is supposedly going to be rolling out their internet based sub service sometime in April last I heard.

As I understand it, it's either subscribe for 3 months to watch something like Game of Thrones or buy them episode by episode a season late. Does anyone know how soon after a season is over before those shows become available on iTunes or Amazon?

I wonder if it will be available via steaming sources such as Amazon Prime or the local cable company? They have to know that there will be customers for rental without subscribing to them, so the bigger market the better.

edit: okay, that probably sounds more snarky than I meant it to. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!

Nah, 30's are the new 20's. Given that many twenty somethings are still living at home. Everything is pushed back. Also because of longer like expectancies.

The HBO thing? I know it will be on AppleTV. Just get an ATV. They are only $99. I love mine.

Streaming a'la Amazon Prime. People have been clamoring for it for awhile now, and since Netflix made more money than HBO last year, they're finally wanting to get in on that action.

It's been well publicized that it's being worked on. The question is exactly when it'll happen. April '15 was the date last I heard, but that was 4 months ago, and there hasn't been much talk of it since. It wouldn't surprise me if it landed around the same time as season 5 of GoT, though.

That's good news. I'm open to purchasing a season of a single HBO Show, Showtime, or any exclusive content. $8 a month Nteflix streaming is one of the best deals around. Let's see what HBO comes up with.

Your link didn't offer up much good as far as HBO itself is concerned. But I learned that Amazon Prime plays host to a huge select of HBO's back catalog, and now know about this Sling TV service Dish is hosting, which might work out well for being able to catch some of the basic cable channels I'll otherwise miss after cutting the cord.

If HBO goes a little too a'la carte, that won't be too big a deal for me, since I currently only watch Game of Thrones and True Detective on there. So long as they're not outrageously priced (like $20 a month individually), I'll just subscribe to them, and get the rest of my movies and old TV shows through the other packages. All things considered, I should be cutting the cost of TV by a third without missing out on much at all.
