I got the white screen of death trying to do the OTA upgrade to tv os 11. So I downloaded the ipsw to try it out. Didn’t find to many changes, plus it didn’t play well with kodi. So I went back to tv os 10.

Will there be more updates revealed later than? That the updates will be released in a later beta?

I really hope there is more to tvOS 11 than 4k, hdr etc. These are basic changes that everyone else has had for a couple of years

That's an interesting one. I think Amazon's (Prime) Video uses Dolby Vision, while Netflix uses HDR10.

Totally agree, the mention of more news later this year definitely points into the direction of a ATV5 with HDMI 2.0a, 4K support and HEVC incl. support for 4K + HDR movies on iTunes.

Probably the ATV5 will get a A10 "light" SoC (single core). AFAIK, the A9 has no HEVC decoder supporting the right profile.

A9 does have hevc. Its used for facetime video chat.

Especially in something like ATV with no battery limitations, can process HEVC in software.

I think it is 99% certain the ATV5 will have 4K h.265 support. For it to be in iOS 11 and Mac OS it must transfer across to the ATV. Finally!

H.265 for iPhone is all about conserving storage space (for your videos). Will be curious to see if Apple views moving iTunes streaming content to H.265 as a priority.

I really wanted an improvement to the Movies app. I'm not sure what exactly, it just isn't great right now.

It is the other way around (in the UK), a fair amount of Netflix content is available in Dolby Vision, with lots more in HDR10.

Amazon meanwhile only support HDR10 at this time.

I stream this content through an OLED LG television, through the native apps in the LG TV's WEBOS 3.0 operating system. ATV5 not needed in my house.

I think this is now Apple's biggest problem - what is the point of the AppleTV? As people upgrade to 4K sets they're going to be getting 4K/HDR Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and VUDU (US) or BBC/ITV/C4 (UK) apps built in. I don't think there are that many people invested in iTunes videos to sell them another box. The Apple TV needs something to differentiate it - it could have been gaming, but Apple dropped the ball again by requiring games are playable with the remote.

Simple. The App Store. A big reason the iPhone was so successful. As you know they changed the rules regarding the remote some time ago. They have also recently change the 200mb limit to 4gb to better improve game play options. I think the main reason for games not being more successful is that they need a big game that everyone would want. Lastly, it would help to have pro or game version with more memory and faster processor if they are serious about gaming. I.E. A10X should be an option for Apple TV 5 for those that really need more game power.

For me it is TV and the early App that caused me to get 8 Apple TV's and return all of my cable boxes was Channels Live TV and a DVR using the HDHomeRun Network Tuners. Which only happened because of the App Store. Since those early days I am seeing much more options for TV which is my priority. I currently use Netflix, Hulu, Directv Now, Channels, HBO, WatchAid and recently PLEX is a big part of my TV (and Movie) watching.

Exactly, the moment all these streaming tv services became available I started paying attention, using their promotions to get free/discounted atvs to put in any room I'd like to be able to watch tv. I dumped spectrum cable tv and bumped up my internet them and haven't looked back. I used sling for a bit, but since I got the grandfathered deal with dtv now, and they got their crap together, it's been pretty seemless, on top of a year's worth of hbo for being a lab rat and being able to watch dtv where I go. There is a certain satisfaction in being able to simply add a tv in the house by simply picking up another atv, not worrying about the long term cost of additional cable boxes, dealing with customer service to activate the box, etc.. To top it all off, plex's experience is superb on the atv (minus music videos), exceeds iTunes home sharing by leaps and bounds. Now that amazon prime is coming, I'd say the bundle is complete, since my wife and I have been paying for prime but haven't used it much since there isn't an app (it can be cumbersome to AirPlay the app to watch things).

To be honest, if Apple wanted to make the atv unique, add a web cam accessorie to be able to FaceTime with people on your tv. Being able to video chat on a 60" tv is superb, especially for out of town grandparents seeing a new born for one. Assuming h265 will bring conference video chats, cause of its reduced bandwidth, having a conference on a huge tv would be superb, for both homes and business.

My only concern is will us 4's be left behind when they come out with h265. I'm sure newer idevises will be able to downgrade 265 to 264 on the fly through AirPlay to a atv4, but I would truly prefer Apple find a way to play 265 natively which is whishful thinking (at least to 1080p, 4K isn't as relevant yet, most people still have 1080p content, through plex is my example). Just tough since the 3 and 4 we're capable of handling video easily through AirPlay, as both utilized 264, but now 265 is a big jump and lots of us invested in the 4, especially cause of the App Store.

Here's hoping

The trouble is that recent app stores on the Apple Watch and Apple TV just haven't set the world on fire. There really isn't any killer apps on the App Store that you wouldn't expect on a Smart TV platform (Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, Plex etc). People like you and me get excited by Channels and the like but most people don't. I'm sure people did take a look at the Apple TV when it launched to see if Apple could turn it into a games console but nothing happened beyond casual games - yes Apple relaxed the controller requirement but it was too late and too be honest, Nintendo are now eating what should have been Apple's lunch with the Switch.

Everything about the Apple TV 4 hardware screams afterthought to me - A8 (not even A8X) was out of date when it came out and now it looks like only the A9 and later will support HEVC (with A10 needed for 4K HEVC). I really hope there is a big TvOS update later this year, but at the moment I can't see any innovation, just Apple catching up with the latest standards (4K, HEVC, HDR).

I agree very much on this. But the question is this: Its pretty clear apple will release apple tv 5 later this fall. Could this also mean we get to see some changes in a later TVos? Or will there be no big changes in a later beta of tvos since there is none in the first beta?

Undoubtedly there will be a new AppleTV with 4K, HDR etc, but what is the selling point for those that have the usual streaming apps on their Smart TV platform. Short of updating the TV app to work with all services (which would require input from 3rd parties out of Apple's control) I can't see what they can do.

Have they pulled the update? I have the tvOS 11 profile installed but when I search for update none is found. I've tried restarting.

I'm wondering that to. Not that there is to many changes. But I noticed when I login to the developer site and try to download the ipsw, it goes to a screen that says something like page not found. Same thing when I try download the profile for tvOS 11. It goes to a site that says page not found or something along those lines.

Smart TVs are terrible, that is why Roku, Amazon Fire Tv and Apple Tv are popular. Tv manufacturers have no incentive to make the experience good long term, they want you buying a new TV not keeping the one you have

I don't have a smart TV so I don't know for sure, but I've heard they have got a lot better recently now the manufacturers have put in better chips. I also believe the Apps are witten by the providers so will probably look the same as the AppleTV apps. Look at Netflix - when they made their own app for TvOS, it abandoned the Apple-inspired design from ATV3 and adopted the interface used on other platforms.

Even if the interface is worse, I'm sure it's 'good enough' for most people. I'm just hoping Apple can come up with something new to wow people, because a new box that can handle 4K and HDR as the only new features (alongside an A10 chip) simply won't be enought to make it stand out.

4k support and autoframerate switching (50/60/23,976/24p) is all i need....and amazon video of course, which is coming.

I have this feeling that Apple will end up borking the Apple TV Gen.5 in some way. Either by it not supporting both HD10 and Dolby Vision so you will get limited HDR functionality or something else.

With that said, as one who owns LG OLED B6V with this "great" WebOS that many proclaim to be one of the best Smart-TV operating systems on the market I have only one thing to say. How do people live with using apps on the TV itself?

People are telling me that there is no longer a need for devices like the Apple TV as all TV's come with their own opearting system sporting most of all needed apps built-in. Well, as one who recently updated my Apple TV Gen.4 to tvOS 11 which broke Plex playback I have been forced to use the one in LG's WebOS and my God.. It's slow (not playback, but navigating the menu's is a nightmare) and the UX-design is far inferior etc.. While I was at it I tested Netflix as well and even though Netflix provides the exact same UX-design on both LG WebOS and tvOS the one for WebOS is so darn slow to navigate.. And they don't even offer a HBO Nordic app for me to use.

I see absolutely no reason why I would ever use the built-in apps, ever.. The only thing holding the Apple TV back is the lack of 4K/UHD and HDR and the lack of Amazon Prime Video. All things that should be resolved this fall.

Even my girlfriend that don't really care all that much about the 4K/UHD vs 1080P, HDR or no HDR and whatnot told me that this Plex-app on the LG OLED B6V was complete garbage. Why not just restore tvOS 10 instead of using this nonsense.

Not try anymore since tvOS10 you can make games which require game controller

a bit unrelated but when in the world will verizon and comcast support single sign on??? I was so looking forward to that feature but it has been useless thus far to me.

Never... the major cable companies are working on their own multi platform solution to this problem.

Do you have any details you could share? Maybe a link? Would be nice to have a single sign on solution no matter where it came from.
