Yes, Apple should support VP9, but YouTube should also deliver in H.265. The same argument can be made on both counts. So be upset with YouTube for not supporting an established standard!
Smart consumers buy the Fire TV Stick 4K when on sale for $30 that has all the codecs including VP9, has internet browser, can run Retroarch, etc. that are all lacking on the more expensive Apple TV.
I could never get a fire stick to play my 1200+ iTunes movies though.
It is a big deal to me. You’re essentially telling me to throw out 1200 movies because you say so. Why would I do that?BFD. Apple TV is on Fire TV Stick 4K but it lacks Netflix exclusives.
If Apple TV is available on Fire OS than it means you can view your (formerly iTunes) library on there directly. It is a big deal to me. You’re essentially telling me to throw out 1200 movies because you say so. Why would I do that?
Everything you just said is why I’m perfectly happy with my Apple TV. I doubt my 500+ 4K iTunes movies would play on a fire stick in 4K with Dolby vision/ atmos and frame matching. And even if they did I like the ATV interface. When my Sony TV is updated later this year to have the ATV+ app I will still use my Apple TV.If Apple TV is available on Fire OS than it means you can view your (formerly iTunes) library on there directly.
I still prefer the Apple TV hardware for the playback capabilities. Dynamic range and frame rate matching, Dolby Vision, and support for almost any legitimate service. It also won’t overheat while playing back content like some of the cheapest devices do.
OLED high five - I have a Sony OLED and it's breathtaking.Agree, I have Fire Tv Cube, Xiaomi Box (Android TV), ATV4K, and the native webOS on my TV all hooked up to my LG OLED and the ATV4K blows them all out of the water for video processing, user interface, and getting channels/apps day 1 (peacock and HBO Max not on fire tv for instance though you can side load)
You clearly missed this entire forum discussion. It works on iPadOS 14 for me
So it should work on tvOS
Ok this might be good news or not, but in tvOS 4.2 public beta (18K5036d) Youtube app version 2.05.01 4k videos automatically play at 4k (at least as long as they are vp9) sorry no screen caps,Ii have not got a capture card sorry. We will have to wait and see if this remaines when 14.2 hitys full public release

I really hadn't thought about 4K Youtube on Apple TV, to be honest. I've pretty much settled on Roku as my main go to player as they are neutral and really don't have the licensing and other conflicts that direct competitors have. With this said: I have both an Apple TV HD, and Apple TV 4k, for specific apple related things. However, from a tv and movie only prospective, since Apple TV is now on Roku, the only reason to have a physical Apple TV box these days is for the apps, and Apple Music, and Homekit, if you use your Apple TV for that.
As I said though, I have multiple platforms, because I find it's the best solution in the end. Even in 2020 no one device can do everything, or does everything perfectly.
Why should Google pay h.265 license for free YouTube content? That makes zero business sense and the reason why royalty free codecs like VP9 exist. Another case of Apple abusing their customers as pawns. sorry, no confirmation for that. Still 1080p vc1 and no vp9.
Sample YT-Link please
not on my end, so staged rollout lightly, btw did you test with the video I posted a link to, so we can be shre we have a similar starting point?tvOS 14.2 beta / Youtube 2.05.01/ Premium = no 4k option
That I wasn't aware of, mainly because I don't use those services. What I was going by was information I had several years ago when looking at streaming provider / hardware comparisons. One of the points made at THAT particular time was Roku being a more neutral platform, and providing the hardware and environment for different vendors to bring their content to.Roku is “neutral”? Can you explain the Peacock and HBO Max debacles? Roku finally caved when NBC threatened to pull all of their apps from the platform...
Odd have you checked if you have tvos 14.2 build 18K5036d (setings/system/software update). That is the only version i can say anything about as it is the only version I’ve got working 4k youtube on. Other than a build miss match or a staggered 4k rollout I’m out of ideas+1 , no success
