That I wasn't aware of, mainly because I don't use those services. What I was going by was information I had several years ago when looking at streaming provider / hardware comparisons. One of the points made at THAT particular time was Roku being a more neutral platform, and providing the hardware and environment for different vendors to bring their content to.

I'll admit I haven't kept up with company practices in a while. So it's possible the information I had at one point is now out of date. I do follow Cord Cutters News: mainly on YouTube, I probably need to go back and look at some more recent episodes. Typically with me, I'll get the info I need, then stop following what's going on, until I need some more info. This can sometimes be years between so again, I'm probably out of date here.

You’re working from very outdated information. Roku is no longer neutral. The industry has changed a lot.

I know now, and that's usually how it is for me on a lot of things. I find out what I need use it until it doesn't work anymore, or IF I need something more current, and by that time everything has changed.

rather odd that it seams I'm amongst the few to get this working, anyway hre is some screenshotd (unfortunately only camera pointed at tv, as a 4K capture card
is something I don't have) 20-10-02 17-20-23 0019.jpg20-10-02 17-29-15 0020.jpg
BTW the screenshot is from this video, and no to my knowledge my ATV4K is snot specialy marked by Either Apple or Google, I have no idea why it works for me while others seem to struggle

Odd have you checked if you have tvos 14.2 build 18K5036d (setings/system/software update). That is the only version i can say anything about as it is the only version I’ve got working 4k youtube on. Other than a build miss match or a staggered 4k rollout I’m out of ideas

yes, updated yesterday. YT-app updated as well. But on Twitter some people confirm it's working.
Either it's fake or what you say a staggered rollout (hope so) ;-)

Its says your location is Norway, where I am close to Apple and Google in Silicon Valley (California). A different regional server farm for Google and your ISP would be the difference.

It just started to work on my end. SDR 4K is in 4K and hdr 4K is in 1440p. Seems like a staggered internal update on Google’s end. You’re mileage may vary.

Which region are you in PST I suspect. Same here and no luck on 4K. Still 1080p.
Silicon Valley, Calif, close to both Apple and Google Campus
It didn’t work all day. I deleted reinstalled the 2.05.01 app. Restarted The ATV4K. Came back ~5 hours woke it from sleep and the HD icon was now blue 4K, no HDR. Guess just be patient it will happen. :)

I’m in the same region but no luck. Tried deleting abs restarting. Still no luck. Guess I’ll keep waiting. I tried it while logged in and logged out. No different. Worked on all 4K content videos?

Edit:
Tried it again. Deleted app again, restarted and re-downloaded. Now it is showing some 4K content. Not sure if it looks as crisp as other 4K content. But more testing is needed. And as reported before. Only 4K at 30 fps or lower. No HDR or 60 fps. 60fps reserved for 1440p or lower. Not sure if more fine tuning will allow 4k 60fps and HDR will come later or the A10X can't do it. Maybe Apple will final launch a new Apple TV this month after years of rumors. Doubt they'll update the remote but that would be a plus. I'd like to have a true all in one box. Time will tell.

I am actually advocating for getting away from lossy compression. Sell me the reference grade file, pick a price, and I won’t have to re-buy a movie ever again. Demand creates necessity, we will get faster networks and cheaper storage if more of us have a need for it.

When 4K first came out there was no content so Sony created a service that delivered hard drives of fairly minimally compressed 4K movies as HEVC wasn't ready. Might still have been compressed in H264 though. There is also Kaleidescape if you got the money but I tihnk that is just the UHD movie (so compressed from the raw, but at fairly high bitrate...) in HEVC.

I'm in the UK and 4k worked for a day or so, just after launch, before becoming 4k 'selectable' but without a true 2k or 4k image being displayed to the 4k panel.

Now 2 weeks later and both 2k (2560x1440@60Hz) and 4k (3840x2160@24Hz) YouTube content plays perfectly.

Bitrate and quality are both good and bandwidth from the YouTube servers is pretty generous at around 112 to 118 Mbps, so no chance of any observable buffering.

Speaking of buffering, the buffer store itself is very generous with 4k content, frequently storing over 80 seconds of 'buffer health' content and typically holding over 60 seconds - even with bandwidth to spare.

It's hard to find fault with it as it is right now but I am sure that there will be tweaks and optimisations to come. Still missing HDR after its fleeting visit a couple of weeks ago, so I guess that will follow soon.

Colour me happy.

still no 4K/vp9 here .. what the hell is the trick ?

There’s no trick. It’s all server side stuff. YouTube is doing a rollout according to some parameters that I would very much like to know. Region doesn’t seem to be it, because some people in my small country of Sweden has confirmed 4K and I’m still maxing out on 1080p...

Hi, there seems to be a trick ;)
If you delete the YT-app and afterwards cold boot the ATV and then reinstall YT ... then 4k is available .. at least here .
Any confirmations ?

Yeah, I’ve heard others say the same thing, but it didn’t work for me. Seems to work for some people and not for others. Could just be a coincidence when it works too, I guess. 😊

very strange anyway.

Well, i double checked if 4K was showing up today but nothing as always. After deinstalling YT, removing power and doing a cold boot i re-installed the YT app . Without any login 4K started working, so it's not account dependent .
14.2 public beta 2 here.
