Because they don’t hire the best people for the job anymore
I blame it on Covid. And everyone working from home. But no matter what the situation is, they have to fix it. Apple’s reputation is on the line. Remember- it just works? Yeah no so much.

Neither I think. There has always been weird bugs like these that come up from time to time. Once they are fixed people will forget about the ones that came before and assume new bugs are increasing all of a sudden. Apple had more than its share of bugs even in the supposed golden era of their QA in the Snow Leopard era.
There are always hoards and plagues of bugs, and we won't forget them. Perhaps you drink too much Apple juice so that you can forget, but we cannot....

I guess the software people didn’t get the memo from the hardware people. All they have to do is read the disk size from the disk itself, rather than hard coding a (64 GB) limit into the software.

And this is why when TVOS gets updated, they shouldn't just describe it as a minor update. Apple should be writing what those bug fixes are on their own products.

what's happening to Apple's software team?

Their hardware team is good to excellent but software its buggy!!

They have a CEO who literally doesn't see the difference between a 4 year computer science degree and a few coding courses through high school.

There's so much more to creating software than "coding" just like there's so much more to writing literature than knowing which end of a pencil to point at the paper.

With a CEO who doesn't get that and who even took out an add campaign to brag that he didn't know what a computer is, how can the company possibly produce decent software.

This !

How much is the ACTUAL cost increase of producing a 128 vs 64 die? I know it can’t be 2x…

So why not produce only 128, a percentage will be partly faulty, those go to 64, the rest needed for 64 get cut down to size in SW (which I don’t see a problem with as you’re paying for a specific size, you’re not being tricked out of a bigger size). You save money in production runs and nobody gets hurt.

I’m fine with this if that’s what they are doing. If the fúp I also know they will fix it for me. No worries.
Because once you raise the storage it becomes the norm then you can’t charge for it and extras, besides with Mr Scrooge in charge your lucky to get anything inside the box it arrives in 😂

I'm surprised that we can actually run out of 64GB storage with Apple TV apps.
I have a 64GB Apple TV HD with only 6GB of space left so it’s quite possible. I’ll be getting the 128GB Apple TV 4K soon and hopefully by then, this “what’s going on at Apple quality control” bug will be fixed.

Are you using one of the storage apps to determine the free space? You may have more storage available than 6GB.

Those apps are not accurate because it includes data that isn't static storage, data from a buffered movie for example. It also includes data that the OS will automatically delete (at least it is supposed to) if you come close to filling your storage, Aerial Screensavers is an example.

Unless things have changed with tvOS 16, I don't think there is a way to accurately show your used/free storage space. Even Xcode doesn't show it.

Basically, you don't know you are about to run out of data until you do, and you get the "out of storage" messages.

It’s been this way for years and years
I know...
It slowly begun with mac OS X 10.7 lion, and the bugs ramped up with each release, with a few decent releases inbetween (Mountain Lion and High Sierra).

Well, this doesn't help matters ... but that's not necessarily a major part of the problem.
The CEO very rarely gets involved with things at the software coding level in a large company. Even if he doesn't care about it a bit, personally? All that matters is he has hiring managers and project managers who DO care and know how to select people who can get things done.

Where I see Tim Cook's skill-set causing problems at Apple is at a higher level. Just because HE finds an iPad handles all of his needs doesn't mean it's an adequate tool for many other people. I feel like he tried to steer the business focus more towards iOS devices because of the combination of them generating more sales/revenue AND the fact they're simpler to grasp and use for less technical people like himself.

There's definitely a trend away from people all wanting to own home computers. Furniture companies have largely quit selling computer desks like they used to. (You can still buy them geared towards corporate/office use, of course. But they aren't all over the place at your local big box retailer from companies like Sauder anymore.) These days, more casual users just buy a high-end smartphone and it's enough for them to use social media, get email, play games, etc. Students needing to learn actual apps and who need to do more text input to write papers and such will buy a notebook computer. But high-powered desktop PCs are vanishing.

Thing is? Apple could turn some of that around, IF they offered compelling products in the category! They pretty much conceded the entire gaming market to Windows PCs with their unwillingness to give people high-performance GPUs in their machines. And they conceded the entire market for back-end server class computers when they canned the XServe. I don't know if a company can really draw in the "best and brightest" developers when they're focused mostly on phones and tablets where there are a lot of limits on what most people will do on them?

Did they not push one of the chips in enough? I did that way back when I upgraded my desktop RAM.

They do on occasion say something is fixed in the posted notes which this beta 3 had zip, but mostly what is found online is just SDK developer notes, not a list of issues/bug fixes. :)

I'm not sure how anyone is even filling up 64GB.
Definitely not with streaming service apps, that most people use it for.
I know with a 32 GB ATV4K 2nd gen I could simply run out of memory (had to reboot) by playing a series of streaming from several sVOD apps, so the 64 GB should be able to fill up similar eventually. I been wondering if you navigate extensively across multiple tvOS app content interfaces along with content played how much is cached before it is purged?

Comparably I now have a 128 GB ATV4K 3rd gen, and the tvOS 16.2 beta 3 (20K5348d) should be PB available after 10AM PST today being it was released to devs yesterday.

Yeah, I’m using one of those storage apps to determine how much space I have because for some reason Apple decided not to list it. I was wondering how accurate the information is and you’re probably right about the app I’m using. Kind of short-sighted on Apple’s part not to let us know. As for the new Apple TV 4K, it’s only $20 more for the 128GB version even if it’s unlikely I’ll need the space (unless I download a few big games). It also has Ethernet which I could possibly need at some point.

Because of tvOS’s various app slimming features and focus on streaming, 64GB is a lot of storage on the Apple TV. I’m guessing that the people who hit the storage wall and require 128GBs probably have a lot of local 4k video as well as an abnormally high number of apps downloaded to their devices. I didn’t even realize there was a 128GB model, my 32GB Gen 4 Apple TV had more than enough storage for how I used it.

Now I'm wondering is it it just a display issue, or will it actually fail if you try to add more than 64GB of data

EDIT: Even worse, does it corrupt data if you add over 64GB like those counterfeit SD Cards?

Games will take up space quickly.

Your 32GB ATV could be filled with less than 6 large games.
