I'm just annoyed that the home button now changed...and I have no idea how it is supposed to work now. If you are in the TV app...it opens a side menu...sometimes? And that menu has your "apps" but within the TV app. Hit the home button again to actually go home.

What is the point of the side menu?
I dont mean to be rude but its such a common reaction when something changes that people are quick to complain rather than take a little while to understand whats changed and see if its actually better.

There are problems here! Its not great and some things havent been thought through for sure.

But, in general usability its fine. The side menu appears when swiping left. Without sitting in front of it trying and writing detailed instructions its quite straightforward to understand its behaviour.

Actually, putting 'apps and channels' there is quite handy because you can basically filter content on the home screen to individual services and shows you a relevant subset of your up next queue. This is a step forward.

As Ive said before what a shame that Netflix are stubborn and wont integrate.

in the UK at least iPlayer isnt appearing in the apps and channels and it presumably should be.

People using their libraries have complained you cant long press for movie info. This is a pain - and probably an oversight but hopefully will be fixed. Meanwhile from your library purchased section just use the siri button to search for the movie you want info for and its all there.

I dont want the MLS pass to be there as ive no interest in it.

Lol, not rude, I tend to react that very same way at times :) then after a few updates, I blank out what's not used. I think Apple should give us the option to hide some sections.

This is awful…am I missing something? I can’t view movie details from purchases in my library without playing it first, including ratings, resolution, atmos availability, and can’t view actors or related movies. Long press does nothing. What a huge step backward, very upsetting.

As someone with a large library of movies and tv shows, I was really happy when I could finally view my library again in the AppleTV app on my AppleTVs (I still can't view anything purchased in the last 3 months on the TV app on my Mac....so hopefully that gets fixed soon too). Unfortunately, now that Apple has removed the iTunes TV Shows app my family are no longer able to share all of the TV shows I purchased. The family sharing library in the AppleTV app on the AppleTV shows my family members all of my movies but only randomly loads TV shows in seemingly no particular order (with different shows showing up every time). It's great to have my library back on the AppleTV app, but it's sad that my family members will have to use my login to view everything now....since before the work-around was using the iTunes TV Shows app to view purchases through family sharing. "It just works" hasn't been something I've said about my purchased movies and tv shows from Apple in a long, long time. Maybe once family sharing for large libraries is working, I can finally say it again. Also, as others have said the store in the AppleTV app is really poor. A great example of this is the sale that Apple just had on box sets. I had to use the iTunes app on my iPhone to find the box sets I was looking for (and to even figure out which ones were at a good price)....with all the money Apple gets on this content, it would sure be nice if it would work for people who purchase just a little or a whole lot.

Glad you agree.

Having given it a try and then spent a while working out whats changed and more importantly what they were trying to achieve.... I certainly see its a positive step forward.

Yes, there are silly things that are irritating about it. I dont see the loss of the iTunes apps as a big deal - i mean it's not as if the TV app isnt just looking at the same data anyway.... and I had wondered for a while why they decided to keep them around whist also having a store tab in the TV app given they were the same thing.

As ive mentioned before - I DONT want that annoying MLS pass thing showing and I dont understand why iPlayer in the UK isnt in the Apps and Channels section. The 'press and hold' for movie info in the library section is frustrating I understand but invoke SIRI and search for the movie and youll get all the info you are missing with the ability to play your content. I do feel that these things can and will be addressed pretty soon given the inevitable feedback Apple is getting on the subject.

For info - the biggest thing Ive had to get my head around is the tighter integration between purchased and streamed content. In my case Ive purchased many seasons of Dr Who - and it was relatively straightforward going into my 'purchased' section to see how far id got and what remained to be purchased.....
Now, however, you are shown ALL episodes including purchased ones AND ones available for streaming and you do need to pay a bit more attention to the 'how to watch' to work out whether you have purchased or not.
Again, you can understand the rationale of merging the two things and it doesnt take too long to understand the new way the information is presented now.

their what are so broken?
With “Broken” I meant that many movies have a weird genre attached.
For example, the Resident Evil movies (the first 6) are all under “Fantasy and Sci-fi” but one that is under “Thriller”. It doesn’t make a lot of sense, to me.

It’s a simple fact that Apple does not focus on user experience anymore. In any industry you need an equal pull between design/product, and selling it. The age old artist vs businessman

Those days are gone though. Apple wants your money, and they don’t focus on end user experience. They don’t really care.

It would appear that people buy Apple based on its past reputation... and as long as people buy, Apple will never change... and why should they if their customers refuse to hold their feet to the fire?

I don't have that problem.

The smaller film icons and side bar are pretty awful. Pulling iTunes Store is a mistake too makes it harder to buy stuff. I imagine they must be making less money on films with this update.

Not at all. The new layout actually makes more sense.

You now have one store not two.

Content is aggregated. Apple have no interest whatsoever in making it harder for you to part with your money believe me.

You search for the movie or TV show that you are interested in - find it instantly - and then can select HOW you want to watch - you have choices for 'free' steaming if thats an option and surprisingly thats presented first - but you also have a link to buy the item from iTunes - its all in one place now.

Think about it - beforehand if you wanted to watch 'Movie X' you could go into the old Movies app and search for it and purchase it.... however you'd have no idea that it was already available in a streaming app such as Disney+ etc with no way of finding out without doing the legwork yourself first.

If you ask me, the new way... once you get your head around the way it works, is much better.

OMG this is the worst user interface regression in years.

  1. Mixed TV show and Movies together is just brain dead.
  2. Mixing first party purchased content with content from streaming apps is likewise brain dead. I don’t want a ‘one streaming hub’ solution. I’ll use the native apps thank you very much, because I rotate my subscriptions and those native apps all have much better interfaces (well not Prime, because it refuses to filter out ad-supported content, but that’s another rant).
  3. Recent purchases in the library includes, some, but not all, of the recent purchases, and again mixes tv shows and movies together
  4. It’s a massive challenge to scroll through years of purchases, including hundreds of movies and shows to find the one you’re looking for, then to scroll through 10+ seasons, and then 20+ episodes to find the last one released - there is no easy way to get immediately to the last episode of a TV series in the library, nor to see which ones have been watched and which ones are new.
  5. Up next is filled with garbage because it’s not a real watch list. You can’t control what’s there, so it’s a mix of crap from other apps, content you’ve started to watch and decided not to finish (which is common with TV+ shows that are just junk). It’s also not possible to put individual episodes in the list, versus just a series.
  6. There’s no easy way to go back and re-watch a series you’ve already watched (Since there’s no indication of watched/unwatched, nor any way to change the flag).
  7. Purchasing content is essentially impossible. There’s no TV show section anywhere to be found (I don’t give a damn what are the top shows), it mixes in channels and apps, and they eliminated the non fiction category completely. It appears that Apple no longer wants to sell current TV shows That aren’t on their ‘trending’ list. It’s also impossible to browse by networks (e.g. PBS).
  8. You can’t hide the MLS or sports sections.
  9. Search mixes content from multiple streaming apps, purchased library content, but not local iTunes content, and it’s completely confusing as to what is actually owned content vs streamed.
  10. It is no longer possible to purchase individual episodes (at least not anywhere I can find).
  11. A large number of older shows/episodes are no longer in the store (e.g. Nova).
  12. Even the ‘TV shows have moved’ is broken - it takes me to the ‘romance’ section of the library where there are exactly three movies. No TV shows.
  13. I’ve turned off the other app integration in settings, but content from those streaming services continues to show up in the TV app.
This change basically makes my Apple TV useless for any content I’ve purchased from them over the years. I plan to stop buying any content from Apple going forward (our spend was hundreds of $/year) because of these changes.

Who on earth thought that merging all this stuff together into a single mess, without any user control over filtering was a good idea? Seriously, this is the worst Apple user interface change I can ever think of, and it’s completely destroyed both the store and the library functions.

I’m sure some will say you’re overreacting, but I’m with you on this. Maybe we’re both overreacting, but I definitely think Apple needs to do a lot to improve the TV app, and should’ve never forced those who have updated to 17.2 to use it exclusively.

Luckily, I’ve held off updating my OS until I’ve seen solid improvements to the TV app.

What happened to “Up Next”? Did Apple get rid of it? Or is it hiding somewhere? It was quite convenient to hit the button on the remote and see the list of shows I’m watching and select the next one.

UI aside, the "Apple TV" app is very buggy for me. I often have to relaunch it as it seems to get stuck on a screen (frequently the details of a movie) and refuses to let me go back to the Store or Library etc.

Just noticed this evening that there must have been a server side update. If you look in the iTunes movie app the wish list is now accessible again, plus they’ve reduced the sidebar and the advertising apps with the hide function working properly now for each app.
This looks to be a reaction to complaints by not being able to access the wish list. There isn’t anyway to add a film from the store into the wish list though. This access maybe temporary to let people get the list off before it’s permanently turned off. Probably indicates that the wish list will disappear forever, which I still think is a bad move leaving users with the only the add to up next which is messy way of bookmarking films/shows.
