Following several months of development, Tapbots today released Tweetbot 2 for Mac with a major visual overhaul inspired by the flat design of OS X Yosemite and more consistent with the iPhone version of the Twitter client. Tweetbot 2 for Mac is available as a free update through the Mac App Store for existing Tweetbot users and has been discounted to $12.99 from its regular $19.99 price for the first time ever.

The major visual changes in Tweetbot 2 for Mac include flatter tabs and controls, redesigned user profiles with a new "Recent Photos" section, a new iOS-like user interface when clicking on or viewing the details of individual tweets, circular profile photos, profile photos for retweets and iMessage-like chat bubbles for direct messages. Overall, the software has a more simplified and clean appearance.

Tweetbot 2 for Mac also features a new timeline search option, verified account badges and improved list organization. There is a new three-pane toggle in the bottom-left corner that makes it much more convenient to open lists in a new window or column, view all of your lists or search Twitter. A list can easily be removed or detached into a separate window by right clicking its title bar at the top.

My first impressions of Tweetbot 2 are overwhelmingly positive, as the updated Twitter client has provided a faster and more fluid experience during my testing. The original version of Tweetbot for Mac would occasionally crash on me, and resizing the app would sometimes result in choppiness or lag, but I have not been able to reproduce either of those issues using Tweetbot 2.

Unfortunately the developers need to charge a relatively large amount because Twitter screwed over third party developers with limited tokens. This means there is only a limited number of users they can sell it to, so instead of 1,000 users paying $2 it is much better for them to have 100 users paying $20.

The developers are awesome, it is way better than the official app and it means no ads so it is worth it if you value quality over cost.

These are my thoughts as well. I am willing to pay for no ads, and it's been a purchase well worth it imo. Nothing Twitter has offered so far is worth switching to their official apps as far as I'm concerned.

For those who thought it was too expensive before, it's now on sale and was just updated. Looks nice, I finally bought it.

Fantastical take note. No need to punish customer loyalty with greedy expensive updates. Tweetbot, a fair company.

Just gotten home and updated. Looks great so far, definitely fits in with Yosemite far better now and everything feels more responsive and fluid. Shame there aren't nearly as many appearance options in the settings nor a night theme, which I love having on iOS!

It's identical to its previous version but more translucent. App icon is really weird though like what the heck, its not at an angle like most other app icons and its ever so slightly oversized: http://cl.ly/bWpK

Yeah, I noticed the app icon looks a bit off. I tried placing it next to different apps to see if it would look any better but it just doesn't match. It's slightly bigger than the settings and finder icons which are square.

I posted this thread before I saw that there was an earlier post in the Mac Blog forum so they may close this one.

I'm using tweetbot for almost 2 years now. Excellent little app, and I don't mind paying for app that's worth it. This is just a visual overhaul, and that's ok. Especially because they aren't charging for it. Nor should they, but a lot of developers are simply too greedy (hi fantastical!) so I simply have to praise tweetbot team for this move :)

My main complaint about Tweetbot is that there is no Notifications tab; you can see your mentions but not a timeline of things like retweets and favorites.

Would be nice to be able to see previews of quoted tweets inline, just as you can within the iOS app. You'd think that with the additional screen space this feature would be a no-brainer. Hopefully it'll be added soon.

You can thank Twitter's ridiculous token system for that.
Indeed. I blame Twitter for not updating their mac app frequently as well.
I just hope that someday we'll be seeing Twitterrific 5 on OS X, and if it ever happened I hope it wouldn't be selling for $12.99 :D

Indeed, I don't blame them for charging a lot for it. I blame Twitter...

The update was a long time coming but it's still missing features. It doesn't support group DMs, for example.

Much as I'm glad to see this update, I still wish it were a proper desktop app on OS X, rather than using a bunch of iOS design patterns that don't work so well on non-handheld displays.

Funnily enough, this update just pushed me to Tweetdeck. Far more features.
