Nope. It’s still the best Twitter client on iOS (I’ve used them all and keep coming back to it).

without access to all the APIs, by definition it can't be the best.

outside of the streaming timeline, search on tweetbot sucks. again not their fault, i'm sure the search API is very limited. but i search twitter almost more than google these days. and the native search has autocomplete and is much more thorough than any 3rd party. try the 2 side by side.

Though Twitter severely crippled Tweetbot I still can’t see myself using the official app because Tapbots really know how to make it just work lol I just want to see the latest tweets, chronologically, with 0 promos and/or “suggestions” so these reasons alone are enough to keep me using Tweetbot (and the syncing isn’t really *that* big of an issue now that its officially rolled out imo).

That being said, love the new look! Fits better with 12 (though agree the icon could be toned down a bit lol).

Also, I haven’t updated on my Air 2 yet and figured it’d look terrible since no OLED but maybe that’s hinting at something to come with Apple’s October’s event ;)

Is there anything this app provides that the official one doesn’t?
No timeline ads or any of the other annoying 'features' the official app thinks you want -- just an uncluttered, chronological timeline. Much better filtering (including regex support), with specified time periods. Filter sync (via iCloud) and timeline position sync (via iCloud or Tweetmarker).

It has no ads. That already makes it the best.

I really like the full black dark mode, it looks great on my iPhone X. The haptic feedback is nice too. I'll keep supporting Tapbots and would have paid if they wanted an upgrade fee. Not having ads and promoted tweets in the timeline is well worth it IMO.

I'm not a big fan of the new icon, but everything else is great.

A good and coherent Twitter experience that's not driving you crazy.

Of course that's just my personal opinion, but even without access to the APIs, it is miles ahead of the official Twitter app:
  • It doesn't patronize me by showing me only content it thinks I might like to view. There is a reason I decided to follow an account and that is to view all its tweets!
  • My timeline stays in the same state where I last left it. The official app keeps refreshing every couple of minutes for no reason at all.
  • The official Twitter app is bloated af. It's 100MB while Tweetbot if 7MB!
  • I don't get notifications about "recently posted tweets" which only purpose is to drag me back into the app for no good reason.
  • I can search my timeline.

Tweetbot let's me decide how I want to use Twitter, while the official app is forcing the experience upon me.

Would Tweetbot be better with access to all APIs? Yes, of course. I would argue that it would make Twitter a better place if developers get access to all APIs.

This is a FANTASTIC FREE upgrade imo more in love than I thought I would be. So many welcome changes besides pure black

APi Protocols being deprecated by twitter was a bummer but that’s not exactly Tapbots fault

I even like the new icon surprisingly but I know that one is polarizing... it’s like tweetbot with a vengeance

I want Twitter to make the necessary changes to allow third party apps to really use Twitter again. I have used Tweetbot for years, but without automatic feed updates, it's worthless.

I think they realize they can't provide as much value anymore due to Twitter's API changes this made this update free for existing users in solidarity.

Paul is a great guy and his company has always created really good apps. I can see him doing that for us as a reward for our loyalty. I've paid for two upgrades already, over many years.
I pay every time just to keep the app going because the day Tweetbot dies is the day I quit Twitter.

By the way, for those who liked the old dark theme, there are actually more themes available now: Default (light), Night (dark), Ocean, Pumpkin, Manhattan, Vintage and Console.

To unlock access to the themes, just give them a tip via Settings - Support Tweetbot, then go to Settings - Display and turn off Switch Automatically.

Given they made Tweetbot 5 a free upgrade over Tweetbot 4, I'm certainly happy to give them some more money so my favourite app keeps being updated in spite of Twitter's hostile antics.

Thanks for sharing this. I don't see this on their website, are these themes shown somewhere?

EDIT: I found it on other websites. I gave a tip and I could select a nice dark grey theme. Problem solved :)

Is there some shortcut for switching the display from dark to light? On more than one occasion, while scrolling through my timeline, I've managed to switch the display from dark to light... not sure if it's a but or if I'm hitting some off-the-wall trigger via keypresses. #annoying

Look n settings. You should be able to switch to light there as well.

Yeah, I know about that setting... but I need a way to turn off the gesture, so I don't accidentally switch themes... now that I know about the gesture, I can always switch back to the dark theme with the gesture, as well... clearly a first world problem.

I'll continue to use Tweetbot as a protest to Twitter for removing the streaming API and trying to get people to move over to the official app. I prefer to not see the promoted tweets and ads. I block ads systemwide on my phone for a reason.
