I guess they just killed off the tweetbot 5 that I paid for. Not surprise they did the same with their tweetbot 2.5 on mac with their version of 3.0. Meh I'm good with their outdated app now which still works fine that I already paid for no more supporting *****ery from these type of companies like EA!

I've used Tweetbot since the beforetimes and I just can't justify a subscription when the official twitter app can do more (even if it's twitter's fault for the discrepancy). I get that the token system forces Tapbots to have to write a "new" client every time they're out of tokens, and I've paid for every version.

Just let me pay for it once, again.

I'm generally not a massive fan of SaaS, but sadly I accept that keeping a Twitter client going with Twitter's constant messing with the APIs is basically an ongoing job at this point that needs ongoing investment, and therefore it's reasonable to charge for it on an ongoing basis.

The real villain in this is Twitter's API team.
This. As much of a cat and mouse game as the Tweetbot devs have to play, it’s worth the $6

Paid plenty of cash to Tapbots over the years for various Tweetbot versions. A subscription-model is where I tap out though. Sure, you can argue that it's no more expensive than paying them for a new version each year...but the release history was never that frequent. Version 5 came out over two years ago.

Maybe it's a mindset thing, but the thought of "subscribing" to use a website that's free for the vast, vast majority of users just leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Yes, Tweetbots is pretty...but no, count me out.

Does Tweetbot allow sharing via Direct Message as in the native Twitter app? I didn't think that 3rd party Twitter clients could do this?...

I hate subscriptions, but there are some apps that I use, need and love. Tweetbot's one of them. Instant buy/sub! (Even though Paul blocked me for whatever reason. lol)

I don't care if it's six cents a year. Subware shouldn't be encouraged. Doesn't matter how good the app is; I wouldn't consider it now.

I'd have no problem paying four times that for a good app—once. I don't believe in re-purchasing apps every month.

Reddit is free to use. I paid upfront for the Apollo app to get a better browsing experience on my iPhone. It’s the same reason I paid to use Tapatalk for Macrumours and it’s why I paid again to use Tweetbot. For a better experience over what the free version enables.

It’s a prettier Twitter app with no ads, and that’s really all I need.

The days of third party twitter clients being a thing are over, in my opinion. The official app is the full deal.

The official app works fine, but it's definitely worse than it used to be! The amount of visual clutter in the way of just viewing tweets is highly annoying! Ads, suggested followers... I don't want to see all of that, but Twitter wants you to!

Yes, that's my main problem with the official app - it's a visual UI headache. Fleets, promoted tweets, "suggested followers" "Suggested topics", more promoted tweets, the compose button cutting off 25% of your bottom tweet in the feed, all the stats underneath every tweet....

If nothing else, Tweetbot is clean and uncluttered.

I'll bite. $6/year isn't much. I mean, it's AD-FREE Twitter, folks.
That's a healthy way to put it.

To Tweetbot 5 users, this "early access" Tweetbot 6 offers minimal set of new features. I have no doubt Twitter v2 API would bring more significant new features. But I was hoping for something more, such as a widget.

When Tweetbot 6 graduates from early access with more notable new features, I will probably subscribe.

Guys, the alternative is NOT the main Twitter app. It is to keep using Tweetbot 5, which is still available (like all previous versions) in the purchased section. Also, it is unlikely that Tweetbot 6 will eventually have features worth the 6/yr unless you really want the new API.

Also, why it absolutely has nothing to do with the pricing change, I really don't appreciate the fact that Paul is mainly a Hackintosh user, so I definitely won't be putting my money his way now that it's on sub.

If you are looking for alternatives (and did not purchase Tweetbot 5) I suggest looking at Aviary or Fenix.

I despise this change to subscription models that many apps I like have adopted but a lot of it is down to developers grossly overestimating the value their apps provide, Fantastical being the worst example.

I can't complain about $6 a year however, that's more than reasonable for an app that requires constant maintenance and feature updates and it's not like he is taking ver.5 away from those of us who bought it already. While subscription models are mostly terrible, it's important to recognise when a developer does right by their existing customers so as a show of support, I paid for an annual subscription.

I'm not cheap but I am cheap. When I think about all the subscriptions that I shell out a month, month expenses and more I don't see the purpose of giving an app $6 a year for something I can get for free. That is like getting Spotify for free and then paying for it for whatever reason. By all means I want developers to get their money but at least offer something different, new and innovative if you can.

Urgh. I've been onboard with Tweetbot for all my iOS devices since the very beginning and I'll probably get it eventually. But it still annoys my sensibilities as someone who doesn't buy that many phone apps and has zero subscriptions. Feels like a rental fee for a DVD movie I've been able to purchase outright for all these years until it became pay-per-view only.

I'll get off my lawn now...

I saw that coming, but have to note that the price is quite reasonable for the app that’s best in class. I'd pay more! Yeah I know it doesn’t support all the Twitter’s APIs (thank you Twitter for ruining users’ experience) but still better than the default one. These guys do magic, Tweetbot is the most stable app on my phone, so I don’t mind a subscription as long as they provide us with the great app.
