Because everyone has a 3D printer laying around.

$45 is a bargain compared to the cost of said printer and that materials.
That's under the assumption that one would purchase a printer and said materials solely for this project.

You could literally pay someone about five bucks to design the .STL file on Fiverr, then get it printed elsewhere.

I have the original but I think I got it for free, or absurdly cheap. I like mine but I wouldn't pay $45 for one.
Now a $99 version that attaches to the Pro Stand...

I like the idea, but that price is simply a no go for me.

I'll keep it in my Amazon Wish List, and when it goes on sale for $25 or less, I'll pick it up.

LOL, what a ridiculous idea, born simply because Apple is too stubborn to include more ports with the design of a freaking desktop computer that is not limited by available space for ports.

The strapped on dock perfectly illustrates that absurdity.
I thought you were just supposed to like put a cactus on it or something.

You can still get it done for less if you use one of the many 3rd party 3D printing services such as Xometry

LMAO!!!! Overpriced chunk of aluminum! Some people will buy anything...

for $44.99
Lol that price point. There is truly no shame anymore.

Surprisingly it has become quite the popular tool nowadays. My local library has 3 of them and I'm in a middle-sized city. I could send a model to the department by email, get it printed the same day and grab it after work for less than £5 total. There are options, you don't have to own one.

I love reading the commentary here, from people pontificating about how easy it is to 3D print this when they aren't going to do that in any way, shape, or form.

Sure, TwelveSouth is expensive. Absolutely. But I have like 3 or 4 of their products, all of which work perfectly and have done their jobs while looking fantastic. People here, despite loving Macs, appear to think people want to spend $$$$ on their Macs, but would then like to...save twenty bucks hand making a shelf for their iMac?

It wouldn't make me post except you know literally not one of these people is planning on making anything like this, nor are they planning on undercutting twelvesouth and taking this business for themselves.

I guess these are armchair manufacturers. :)

Are we really making excuses for a $45 piece of metal. Welp, at least they know their audience then.

Well, if Twelve South sells ten five of these, they will have captured the design and engineering costs (engineer's time, one paper napkin, #2 pencil).

Plenty of people here seem to be presuming anyone who buys one of these will be buying for themselves.

I was given one of the original BackPack as a gift a few years back.

It’s a very sturdy product and the quality and finish is good. (I think this would be different with the proposed 3D printed versions…)

These new versions appear to be improved with regards to simplicity, as they don’t seem to need the tensioning screws and use a snap-in section as a mounting point instead.

Exactly. The things I can get my kid to print that are being sold for $xxx.xx is insulting.

However, as my iMac is wall-mounted and has no stand, I have no use for this. ;)
But it's aluminum and vented

I guess there are people who want this to be visible and show off-able, but I'd personally much prefer a plastic version for maybe $20 max, as my iMac sits right up against the wall and the back is hidden.

It's not about the number of ports, it's about hiding crap on your desk. Like a lot of people, I've got a couple portable drives hanging off the back of mine (with ports to spare, thanks), and I'd rather have them up where I can't see them. The principle of this is great -- but the price to me seems quite a bit too much to pay for a little shelf.

haha...$45 for this???? I could buy TWO Apple cleaning cloths instead! What a ripoff.

Seriously, I want this but the price is too high. I have an external drive (Samsung T7) for our iMac and it's not exactly elegant just dangling there. I velcro'ed it to the stand but it still looks a bit ugly.

Does anybody actually have a 3D file that I could take to my coworker who has a 3D printer?. I considered getting a 3D printer myself but it seems you have to invest time learning how to deal with the files and there is an an overall learning curve....and I don't want to invest the time yet.

Come to think of it, it would be even cooler if the 3D printed stand was customized to hold my T7

Secondly....

When I got our iMac, I looked around for something exactly like this....went to Amazon and didn't see anything. I'm surprised I can't buy a knockoff from aliexpress for a few dollars.
