i got into the Eragon series and loved it. (already a star wars and lotr fan)

i was looking for something else to read, and my sister got me to read the harry potter books, and i loved them.

so then, someone mentioned that i should try out the twilight books.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hang on a second. Putting Star Wars, Eragon, Twighlight and Harry Potter in the same category as Lord of the Rings?

Star Wars: Fun series of movies that were groundbreaking, but ultimately still just pop movies
Harry Potter: Terribly written, fun, inventive books
Eragon: Terribly written by a 15-year old, stealing from just about every other fantasy book series ever written (I mean, even the name: Eragon sounds suspiciously similar to Aragorn)
Twilight: Totally pop book series that are the book equivalent of fluff chick flicks

Lord of the Rings: Serious literature with tons, and tons of depth; beautifully written; relies almost more on atmosphere than plot; has been known to have people give up on it during the chapter "The Council of Elrond" because they were looking for fluffy, plot-driven fantasy; so influential that it formed the basis for just about all fantasy that came after it

Saying, "I liked Lord of the Rings, so I thought I might like Twilight," is like saying, "I like Dom Pérignon, so I thought I might like Andre."

My fiancee is gaga over the books, so we watched the movie together and I'm currently in the 4th book. The movie was passable, but I do enjoy the books. Her writing style is very simple, and I'm definitely not about to say there's anything too deep in it, but she touches interesting concepts and the books have some good pacing for the action sequences.

After this, it's back to Dune. How's that for contrast? :D

I grew up as a massive Star Wars fan, and to be honest I am more into 'bloke' films (guns/drugs/fast cars etc etc) but I LOVED TWILIGHT.

Yes I did watch it on my own and it has a certain cool ring to it.

There is an element of Smallville to it which makes it quite funny to watch and there is some really good acting from the guy in it (don't know his name).

Well worth a watch :)

Dull as hell, I can't even remember what it was about other than it had that boy bloke out of Harry Potter in it. I was expecting much more. If I want vamps I'd rather watch a few random episodes of Buffy.

for some reason you seem just a little bit biased. just a little. but maybe it's just me

did you see the movie before you read the first book?

saying that the Star Wars movies are just pop is not cool (im talking about the orginals not the crap they just recently made, ep 3 wasent bad actually). they are way better than the LOTR movies. the LOTR books are pretty awesome but we are comparing movies and im sorry but the movies were...well not great. elijah wood played frodo like such a whimp. the only one that pulled it off really well was Ian McKellen as Gandolf. and Viggo did a pretty good job as Aragorn.

Twilight in my opinion (cause that's all this is) was an entertaining movie. some really dumb aspects to it but some pretty cool scenes.

I rented it a couple nights ago as requested by my sister who loved the series. As a guy who had never read the books, I thought the movie was horrible, but was told that it was a great representation of the book (which i have started reading and if by great representation that means the book is just as bad, well then yes, it is a great representation). \

The whole thing needs to be re-written. I was amazed by how awful it was.

Well sure they are readable. That doesn't make them good though...

i think it kind of funny that you started a post asking weather or not you should rent a movie or not and got so many responses. next people will start asking the macrumors community what cereal they should have for breakfast.

well hey, it's a good thing i asked right? if i didn't, i would have wasted a trip to the store, wasted at least $5 to rent a bluray, and wasted about 2 hours of my time watching it.

so instead, i wasted more time in this thread ;)
