Yea. That’ll be the day I pay for a tweet.

You don't pay for a tweet.

Pretty sure this is just going to be pay for porn.

Text only tweets are great for quick announcements... not stuff people would pay for.

Good educational videos might be okay to distribute this way. But I think long niche in-depth articles and exclusive podcast stuff would be distributed via Patreon instead. And the videos can also be distributed via Patreon.

Porn pictures and videos are all that will be distributed to Super Followers via Twitter.

I don't know what else could be distributed via Tweets that anyone would pay $5/month for.
PlayStation 5 in stock alerts maybe?

It’s the only reason I looked at Twitter in the last year or so. Now that I have one, I no longer need Twitter though.

I agree with the general sentiment that social media in general and Twitter in particular have had a complicated relationship with society at best. That said, there is a use case for their subscription service. For example, I head a not-for-profit community association. We would be very interested in having our members on Twitter in our own subscription where they would not just be accessing expert content from fellow members but also videos, and other content specific to our community. Of course whether this works or not for an entity like us will depend on the fees and implementation. Just a counter-thought to some of the posts.

I use Twitter daily but I don't follow the type of people who would need this service to communicate with me. This seems like a good move to keep people on Twitter instead of Twitter plus a secondary subscription service, but I have doubts that Twitter will be able to keep up with the features available on the subscription services.

Reading this I couldn't help but think of one of the Critical Drinker's famous lines.

Oh, there are absolutely people who will pay to follow those they worship, and there will be vultures to take advantage of those people. They don’t even have to be “celebs” you and I have heard of. These YouTube and Tiktok sensations have cult followings too, and I only hear of who they are when something goes wrong and they make national news, like a stalking situation or a suicide.

At least if it turns into Onlyfans you’re getting something for your money 😂

So instead of just seeing false information, now we get to PAY to see false information!!!

Heh.. all these comments. Where is the logic?

It's interesting to me that people hate ads, hate companies mining data for ads, and then flat out refuse to help a platform exist without relying on ads. How do you expect a company, which has real expenses, to exist if you won't let them have a product to sell?

People are already turning to 3rd party services to support the content creators (Patreon, etc). You will support the creator but not the content delivery platform? Instead, you give it to someone else that is just siphoning off of their success? You know Patreon takes "their cut".

This model works for Twitch and YouTube. Seems like a good plan for Twitter as well. That said, I don't see myself paying $5/mo for tweets though, not enough value. $10 a year?

Alternatives?
Paying monthly directly to Twitter for ad-free and exclusive features?
Content creators paying Twitter to use the platform?

It has been rumoured for awhile Twitter was looking into some type of subscription service, I believe it was rumoured on this site, so this isn't a surprise.

There's only 2 options this is good for:
  1. Twitter's OnlyFans
  2. Patreon
There's only one account I hope doesn't go paid tweet route. So I'm looking forward to the day they remove this feature.

Well Patreon content creators are not uploading their content onto twitter - you simply cannot ... it's just a link and 160 character blurb.
OnlyFans LMAO ... is it horrible that I've known about this site from 4yrs ago (a horrible Ex that I wish I never met).

What’s with all the hate over the super follow feature? You don’t have to super follow anyone and the option to follow for free will remain available, just without access to additional content.

Twitter’s effort to reduce dependance on ads for revenue is progress in the right direction and I think very future-focused. I hope this feature works spectacularly so they can cut out ads altogether and reaffirm that MR comment pundits have no idea what they are talking about.
