Twitter aims to start charging users for blue check verification badges as soon as next week, as part of new owner Elon Musk's plan to further monetize the social media platform, according to a new report.

The badges will be part of an $8-per-month Twitter Blue subscription, an increase of $3 over the current $4.99 per month price, which will also include priority in replies, mentions, and search, the ability to post long video and audio, and half as many ads as non-paying users.

For users who already have the verification badge, such as celebrities, journalists, and other notable influencers, "chief twit" Musk intends to give them a "multi-month grace period" before they will either need to pay for the badge or lose it, according to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the plans. Twitter will reportedly allow government accounts to stay verified, as well as those in regions where Twitter cannot charge payment.

The company also plans to expand access to its edit function, which is currently limited to paying Twitter Blue subscribers. All Twitter account holders are expected to be given access to the long-requested edit feature, and that could also happen as early as next week, although the timing for Twitter's plans could still change, according to Bloomberg's sources.

The plan to charge for the blue verification badge has been met with controversy, with some prominent holders of the badge speaking out against the move and saying they won't pay for it.

Some critics have accused Musk of "charging for free speech," in the sense that users who don't pay up will have their posts diminished or silenced. Others however have supported the move, agreeing with Musk that it will help weed out bots and other spam accounts.

Musk is working rapidly to monetize Twitter, as the social network has historically not been particularly profitable. In addition to introducing changes to Twitter Blue, Musk has also said that he plans to bring back video service Vine. Rumors suggest that Musk has shifted more than 50 Tesla engineers over to Twitter to work on the new features.

So if you can pay to get a checkmark does that mean you have to use your real name? Or can you still be anonymous and get the check just as long as you’re giving Twitter $8/mo? I think the fact that Musk seems to be focusing all his energy around the checkmark shows he has no real plan for Twitter. He just can’t handle it when he’s not in the spotlight and not being talked about. As far as an edit button goes, it should be time limited and there should be a history of what was edited for everyone to see. The other day the White House tweeted something about increases in social security checks and when Twitter added a fact check/context disclaimer to the tweet the White House then deleted the Tweet. If everyone is going to get the ability to edit tweets then the delete function should be removed.

I disagree on the deletion part, at least for common mortals (governments are a different thing due to retention schedules). The fact that I want you to read something today doesn’t mean that I want to leave it available tomorrow.

After Elon implements his pay-to-play scheme, everyone with a blue check will be advertising to all the world that they are paying Elon for the privilege owning a blue check. Yes, they are so utterly lame that they are paying the richest man in the world for a stupid blue check next to their name.

The blue check will become a mark of shame and the equivalent of shouting “Hey! I’m a total douchebag!” Normies will come to loath the blue check and it will become Twitter culture to unfollow blue check accounts. Celebrities will revel in the fact they don’t have a blue check.

Elon is a fool who will tank Twitter and I’m here for it.

Only reason this is fun is because Twitter's been a crap hole for years anyway. The code base is pretty much garbage, and the concept is dated. Kinda like buying a 1989 Lincoln Town car for a premium price because your buddy's mom was driving one.

Musk is going to lose his well fed rump on this. Not quite as quickly as the ZuckerLizard is over at Facebook, but pretty quick.

The REAL fun starts when FB isn't getting enough money from adds anymore to prop up crappy VR headsets that no one wants, and the digital desert that is the metaverse. Then starts charging some sort of fees.

That's gonna be a hoot. I'll give Musk credit. At least his antics produce something. Cars, spaceships, crap like that.

Zuckerberg is just a wart on the soul of humanity.

It depends. Blue Checkmarks can and do make money out of that thing. Celebrities will keep them if nothing else to avoid fake accounts.
