Only reason this is fun is because Twitter's been a crap hole for years anyway. The code base is pretty much garbage, and the concept is dated. Kinda like buying a 1989 Lincoln Town car for a premium price because your buddy's mom was driving one.

Musk is going to lose his well fed rump on this. Not quite as quickly as the ZuckerLizard is over at Facebook, but pretty quick.

The REAL fun starts when FB isn't getting enough money from adds anymore to prop up crappy VR headsets that no one wants, and the digital desert that is the metaverse. Then starts charging some sort of fees.

That's gonna be a hoot. I'll give Musk credit. At least his antics produce something. Cars, spaceships, crap like that.

Zuckerberg is just a wart on the soul of humanity.
I want major social media platforms in this order:
  1. TikTok
  2. Twitter
  3. Facebook
  4. Instagram
  5. Macrumors.

After Elon implements his pay-to-play scheme, everyone with a blue check will be advertising to all the world that they are paying Elon for the privilege owning a blue check. Yes, they are so utterly lame that they are paying the richest man in the world for a stupid blue check next to their name.

The blue check will become a mark of shame and the equivalent of shouting “Hey! I’m a total douchebag!” Normies will come to loath the blue check and it will become Twitter culture to unfollow blue check accounts. Celebrities will revel in the fact they don’t have a blue check.

Elon is a fool who will tank Twitter and I’m here for it.

Everyone already thinks that about blue checks. There’s a reason the term is used pejoratively.

Do you not believe that some people are more important/trustworthy than others when it comes to disseminating factual information? Literally any troll can now spoof someone for $8/mo
If the checkmark was only going to those who deserved it, it'd be one thing. But it went to a lot of no-names as well due to Twitter's secret system for handing them out. It was pointless/worthless before and will be even more so now.

The first thing that Twitter should’ve done is to have checkmarks for elected officials and checkmarks for official government accounts of different colors. There’s a difference of expectations between what I expect to read from my municipality’s account and what I expect to read from Stephen King.

Good, why should it be free?

When a service is free, you know where the money is coming from.
I have to agree.
Years ago when I was a late teen (it was the beginning of the social media explosion) it was so cool having all this tech for free...
But hafter having seen the amount of aggressive data collection companies indulge in, I'd now rather pay for a service if it means having slightly more privacy.
Then there are companies like Adobe that charge you a pretty penny and still harvest loads of data.

This is really sending some people off their rockers. It's entertaining how easy it is for Elon to troll those outraged; AOC's overpriced sweatshirt and how it's the price of a $8 starbucks.

Elon is either the dumbest person on the planet or he is being blackmailed to destroy Twitter. Nothing about this is rational.
Well, he was forced to follow through on the deal, so at some point he realized how dumb it was to purchase an unprofitable social media site for $44 billion. Maybe he thought from the start that he could just screw Twitter investors because he's used to getting away with screwing randos.

This is a great idea. It'd be nice if that was done now. Maybe Elon can waive the fee for government officials and give them their own special color. Make the celebs pay for it though.

All is fair in love and war. Twitter needs to be profitable, let's be honest. I rather an upfront cost of $8 per month than the entire platform become ad-infested like YouTube has become. It an honest exchange—you pay this, you get this. He has also said this will help raise funds to pay Twitter content creators—something Twitter has never done. Besides, he's offering additional perks for paying subscribers such as long form video and pushes in the algorithm—this will help deal with many of the bots (not all), of which Twitter has a lot (off topic junk, spam and crypto scams). I won't be paying because Twitter is not important enough to me regarding what I tweet. I mostly read the tweets of those I follow. But I can understand needing to charge this kind of fee if this short-form messaging platform is to survive and not grow into an ad-ridden behemoth. Something that would ruin the Twitter experience. Elon is smart and will pivot as needed.

I disagree on the deletion part, at least for common mortals (governments are a different thing due to retention schedules). The fact that I want you to read something today doesn’t mean that I want to leave it available tomorrow.
Disagree. If you don’t want people to read something don’t post it in the first place. But government/politicians certainly shouldn’t be allowed to delete anything.
