Are you really asking me for a direct quote source on people admitting they won't feel special anymore? Really? Of course such a thing doesn't exist - people aren't going to admit they are that shallow for the world to see by literally saying that sentence. They will instead admit they are that shallow by posting stupid things like AOC did. Use some common sense here and read between the lines.
I am using common sense. And what I’m seeing is those complaining most about the so-called ‘elites’ are actually the ones obsessed with who does/doesn’t have a ‘blue check’. And many of the ‘blue checks’ I follow are saying they don’t care if they lose it (because they’re not going to pay for it). Let’s face it this isn’t about a product or a business plan for Twitter. It’s Elon Musk knowing who his new fan base is (the ones most obsessed about ‘blue checks’) and pandering to them. None of this fan base has been able to explain why verifying someone’s identity should cost $8/mo. Heck, Musk hasn’t explained it either. It’s not about that; it’s about Musk punishing people they don’t like.

I’ve never seen someone take over something and so obviously kill it so quickly. A ton of people I follow are quitting. Even more are talking about wanting to stay, but the More Musk shows us he is as bad as disgruntled Tesla owners have warned us, the more it’s clear that the party over there is over. Nobody cool wants to pay $8 a month for the check mark. Curious if anything actually replaces it, or if online culture will continue to fragment more and more. I think within another decade most cool people will think minus for jobs being online will be the least cool thing you can do. Flip phones and retro tech will become even more in.

Years ago I was so excited about Elon Musk. Tesla and SpaceX both seemed so cool - and still are. But this guy has gone off the deep end lately. Closed my Twitter account this morning.
HES gone off the deep end? I mean you're kidding me right?
Goodbye, you wont be missed.

Only reason this is fun is because Twitter's been a crap hole for years anyway. The code base is pretty much garbage, and the concept is dated. Kinda like buying a 1989 Lincoln Town car for a premium price because your buddy's mom was driving one.

Musk is going to lose his well fed rump on this. Not quite as quickly as the ZuckerLizard is over at Facebook, but pretty quick.

The REAL fun starts when FB isn't getting enough money from adds anymore to prop up crappy VR headsets that no one wants, and the digital desert that is the metaverse. Then starts charging some sort of fees.

That's gonna be a hoot. I'll give Musk credit. At least his antics produce something. Cars, spaceships, crap like that.

Zuckerberg is just a wart on the soul of humanity.
You think so? You haven't been reading very well. Vine will get a huge overhaul and guess what you all of the sudden have? Competition for YouTube. Musk is utterly brilliant in what he does with his companies and this will be no different. In 3 years, we'll all be buying stock again.

They do, twice already in this thread. Both unnecessary since it is always unnecessary.

Not sure why you were confused. My example was of a guy who wore a Nazi costume into a NYC bar a couple days ago on Halloween. This was entirely legal but also the bar asked him to leave because they didn't want him there. This is a good example of moderation for those don't understand it. Things can be legal to do/say but distasteful for most users, which makes it distasteful for advertisters, which is why every social media network needs moderation of some kind.

After Kanye went off the rails about Jewish people to his tens of millions of fans on twitter, a group was over the 405 freeway with signs saying "Kanye was right" and were sieg heiling traffic. So, yeah, sadly having to discuss this stuff and how it trickles out into the "real" world is a thing we have to do in 2022.

Well the ‘blue checks’ I’ve seen complain about aren’t saying it’s bad because peasants like you and me will get a checkmark too but that Twitter shouldn’t need to charge for verification (or at least not a monthly fee) and just giving someone a checkmark if they pay Twitter $8/mo isn’t solving any problems. Like I asked earlier, will the $8 actually be a real verification and will those users be required to display their real name?
The only valid complaint I can see; although, it would never happen, is if EVERYBODY paid to be verified. Nothing is prioritized then. This is why I don't like Premier or Premium with no limit. Then you still have to wait as long as you used to in general status.

the vast, vast majority of users do NOT have a checkmark. you do NOT need to pay the $8 and NOTHING changes, other than you know awesome free features he is bringing to everyone like an EDIT button... finally. if you have an online presence like celebrities, journalists, and other notable people who want to be certain their readers on twitter can identify them as authentic, the $8 fee is a drop in the bucket vs. the outreach Twitter provides to their audience. if you are normal everyday person and just want less ads and make sure your replies to threads have more visibility than bots then yeah, you can pay $8 too. the man bought a BUSINESS, a company which has NOT been making money. Elon doesn't just want to make changes to moderation, he wants the company in time to make money and this is a necessary part of the process.

Hitler ordered the murders of millions of people. How the hell do you bring him into a discussion about Twitter and Elon Musk?
Yea there was enough of this a while back. None of what was done then or now is even close. But I still don't understand why you have to keep paying to be verified?

Well, who would you use as an example of someone who did many things, but who shouldn't be admired? Someone who is well-known enough that you wouldn't have to spend a lot of time explaining your analogy?

This sounds like those who defend Apple taking 30% of every IAP. Goes both ways. Without notables Twitter would be nothing. Just like iOS would be pretty worthless without developers.

I joined twitter in 2009 before it was about celebrities and going viral and content creators it was just a place to interact with people, not the cesspool of political views, fake accounts, endless retweets, etc that it is today.
I have more confidence in twitter now than I did under previous leadership. I don't know if it can be fixed but either way it will take time.

Keep telling Musk things aren't possible.
I would not necessarily make him my best friend or idol. I hesitated to get a Tesla because of it (killer car by the way).

Not a fan but underestimating Elon is not a good bet.

How exactly would it weed out bots and spam accounts? Those accounts will just pay the $8 to give their posts prominent placement and fool users into thinking they're other people.

Wait till we start hearing... I got a blue check and I got fired (for posting something stupid, insulting or racist).

There are a lot of tech things I follow on twitter and it all goes into one feed which I love. Twitter was only trash because it was bias. Now it wont be.
Bias will still be there, it'll just be on the other side.

Love it. The checkmark was for verification of identity purposes. I totally get why The Rock would need a checkmark verifying he is The Rock. But the little Apple ”personalities” at RelayFM or ATP? Does “Mike Hurley” really need a blue checkmark? Is anyone out there trying to impersonate John Siracusa? Does anyone not in the Apple world even know who “Casey Liss” is? Lol.

At some point, it became the mark of the lefty cool kids. So many people built a heaping of self esteem off that checkmark and now they will lose it. Sad!

At least you’re being honest about why Musk is doing this (or why his fanboys want him to do it). They just want their ‘cool kids’ to get it instead. Honestly I never even noticed that the guys from the ATP podcast had checkmarks. I have a Twitter list that includes them and a bunch of other Apple/tech focused people. None of them were added to the list because they had a checkmark by their name. And if they all lost their checkmark tomorrow I wouldn’t stop reading what they tweet.
