Social network Twitter is experiencing a global outage at the current time, with most users unable to refresh or in some cases even load their timeline feeds. Neither Twitter's website nor the Twitter iPhone app are working properly.

Sending a tweet works in the app, but in many cases only the author can see their tweet given that timelines are out of action. Twitter Search is also non-functional. There are thousands of reports about the outage on the Down Detector website.

It is not clear what is causing the outage, but Twitter conducted its fourth round of layoffs over the weekend, cutting 10% of its remaining workforce. The layoffs reportedly hit several departments, including ads and infrastructure engineering, leaving the company with fewer than 2,000 employees. It had about 7,500 when Elon Musk took over.

Update: While the Following feed is still down, some users are reporting they can now see the For you feed, which aggregates recommended tweets algorithmically from accounts that are not followed.

Update 2: Reports suggest that timelines have now been restored and both the Twitter app and website are working as expected.

A sign of things to come.

Systems like Twitter are resilient, so it was never realistic that it would break down immediately even under the worst management.

In a vacuum, this would be a nothingburger, but against all the other "unconventional" moves, it looks like the formation of a trend. It's a sign that the technical debt they've been racking up is starting to become difficult to manage.

My "For you" one works. But my "Following" tab doesn't update or show new tweets.

Don't know if this is just an interruption in service, or Twitter wants to get rid of the "Following" tab option. (which would sucketh).

Not like we all didn't see this coming.

The cryptobro mantra of "he's sacked all of the engineers and it's still working" falls a bit flat just the same as your car would continue to work for a period of time if all of the mechanics in the world vanished.

Maybe you should follow better accounts, Twitter is what you make of it
Not really. Twitter tries its hardest to get you to use their algorithmic feed. They also place recommended tweets everywhere on the site. Comments are incredibly toxic even for people you follow. Everything will eventually turn into some low effort meme fighting or politics.

He's going to keep breaking and fixing the code until they get rid of the impurities from the cancerous mess it once was. I am sure there are still some toxic employees remaining from the old guard who need expelled as well.
Tell me you’ve never worked on a large system without telling me you’ve never worked on a large system

I had no idea this site was a clandestine thinktank of business insider experts.
Ever tried maintaining a large system after most of the domain experts are gone *and* you dont have the manpower? Technical debt is a problem even in a stable environment, here it’s a problem that can easily grow unmanageable.
