I follow the NFL and College Football guys from ESPN and enjoy their info
I'm rarely on Twitter, but when I am, they get the news first and fresh

Well you do know your Football MD ...

I guess I am talking all this Gaga stuff and such, also in our paper they post tweets from these people ... I am always like ... seriously now who cares about this stuff?

Those aren't buttons! ;)

Real men use keyboard shortcuts anyway. Them's the only real buttons around. :p

Those of us who got Tweetie via macHeist got a "super secret handshake" to unlock some additional preferences and will apparently get access to some things before they are released to the unwashed masses. Doesn't fix any of the issues y'all are talking about though, but it does imply it's still being worked on.

It is not just that Twitter for Mac that sucks ... IMO, it is Twitter period.

Has anyone ever sent or read even one meaningful Tweet?

I follow my city's twitter which is oddly informative. I also follow rdowns ... which is like Tom on myspace only cooler, more meaningful, and probably better looking. :D

I used to feel that way until I actually started really using it.

* You can communicate with your favorite artists, etc. and they can and will respond. It may be shallow but it's still powerful for fans.

* Get free offers/deals (thank you Amazon ;))

* The biggest is probably breaking news from the sources. This puts the news media even further behind (and a reason they started publicizing tweets).

I don't get why people think it sucks. It serves its purpose. Not sure what people want it to do

Try Kiwi.

Plenty of solid Twitter apps around.

Although if you think an outdated piece of crap like Tweetie is a good app, I question your taste.

After using Echofon on my Mac for so long I am having trouble trying to get used to Twitter for Mac. I'll keep trying it out for a few days and see how I end up liking it. I never used Tweetie though.

shorten url?

Where are the options to shorten a URL? also i hate that is does not work as a menubar program standalone. At the moment i cant see what it offers over the old tweetie.

There is no options to configure shortened URLs, it uses t.co by default. This is the best way of doing it anyway because t.co links automatically become expanded URLs on Twitter (and in supported Twitter clients). This means instead of using bit.ly/b45hsh you have a full URL that other people can see before clicking on the link. It is much slicker and cleaner for the end user.

It is amazing how many people are actually mad about the lack of that, t.co should be mandated as a standard URL shortening service for Twitter imho. Stop trying so hard and just enjoy the damn app!

Anyway, in terms of removing it from your Dock, that is something that Apple has in their App Store requirements (though other apps clearly still offer it as an option, but for how long?)

If you really want to remove it from your Dock, a simple hack will allow you to remove any app from your Dock, and is a tip that you should know how to do regardless. Though the only downside is when the app is updated the setting will get reverted.

thanks for the tip

thanks for that tip, i was not aware of that. The shortening i still prefer the shortened version when using as it much clearer when composing.

i love it, just like Tweetie for me with cmd-N for new tweet (and even type anywhere new tweet [secret menu]) but with a more polished UI. also has native retweets and lists.

if you think its missing previous features check out the menus. follow me here guys (but not really an Apple centred account)

I don't hate the new Twitter app but wish that it had the ability to display full name instead of Twitter name on the timeline and the ability to increase the size of the fonts.

Also, the notifications of new tweets on the dock feature doesn't seem to be working for me.

It's not without its flaws but (for me) it's a suitable replacement to Tweetie.

i cant even get it to open
everytime i add my name and password
i get "Unauthorized. Failed to validate oauth signature and token."
any ideas

...

I agree twitter sucks...and not just the app the whole concept is retarded

1. Perhaps if you think Twitter sucks, this isn't the place for you. I'm sure the Mac trolls on here annoy you, and you are doing the same thing. A lot of people find it very useful for day to day rapid communication as well as a way to engage in news that is relevant to you, I've been a user since 2008 and I genuinely can't imagine going without it - its a perfect little slice of social networking.

2. Twitter for Mac isn't so bad, I made it dockless, used a quick hack to get all of the MacHeist functionality back ;) and now it does everything I want of it without being intrusive. Marvellous.

I like it a lot, not the greatest but it gets the jobs done. Their is even a new safari extension for it that makes use a little better. I don't know how to get back the Machiest feature .

Part the storied mists of time and gaze back far enough and you might remember that MacHeist once promised bundle-buyers the option to play around with Tweetie 2 before release, and even get a copy for free when it finally came out.

Needless to say, that promise came back to haunt MacHeist, as Tweetie was bought by Twitter and Tweetie 2 became the official Twitter for Mac client, which debuted yesterday as a free download on the Mac App Store.

MacHeist hasn’t let us bundlers down, though, as the new Twitter for Mac client has some secret easter eggs that are only available to MacHeist buyers… or anyone who doesn’t feel bashful around a terminal prompt.

If you’ve previously purchased a MacHeist bundle, just click on the help menu for Twitter for Mac, hold down the control, option and command keys, enter your MacHeist bundle number and behold the revelation of a secret menu option which gives you access to a whole load of super secret preferences… many of which are fairly useless, but hey, still neat.

Or just open up a Terminal window and type these commands in:

defaults write com.twitter.twitter-mac ScrollingMakesKeyAndOrdersFront -bool true

defaults write com.twitter.twitter-mac UserTimelineDerepeater -bool true

defaults write com.twitter.twitter-mac TypeAnywhereToTweet -bool true

defaults write com.twitter.twitter-mac HideInBackground -bool true

defaults write com.twitter.twitter-mac ESCClosesComposeWindow -bool true

defaults write com.twitter.twitter-mac NormalComposeWindowLevel -bool false

You're following the wrong people.
If you ignore the Lady GaGa, 50cent and all the other bull celebrities, there's really interesting people there. There's so much grass roots political movement on twitter (in the UK at least), things that mainstream media choose not to report on get forced to the frontline by twitter and people being able to talk about it and communicate it to others. I find out about events and shows that I wouldn't otherwise, met new and interesting people.

It's a tool, it only works as well as you use it.

Sorry ... IMO a complete waste of time and just totally silly

Most of the time breaking news is on Twitter before you read about anywhere else. It really is a fantastic tool.

Wow. I'm loving the two different keyboard shortcuts for the same thing there. It's nice to know I have a choice.
I didn't even notice that. Nice. You've also gotta love how the menu doesn't even line up with the menulet. I'm not sure how they missed that one as well.
