I'm old (and grumpy) and so I don't get it, and I have no use for it.

I could care less about people's minute to minute details of their lives..

Not only old (and grumpy) but also no grasp of a very simple concept.

I understand how it works, but I don't understand why people want a service that essentially emulates Facebook with far less functionality and no threaded conversations.

Well I guess my lack of intelligence means that I choose to avoid reading/using twitter because its mostly about people's inane drivel. ;)

That wasn't my point at all. The idea I was trying to get across was (is) that Twitter is only as useful as the effort you put into it.

If you only join Twitter to post inane tripe, then you won't get anything out of it unless your only goal is to read inane tripe and post more of the same.

Approach it professionally, and you will notice benefits. But there again, you have to participate actively for a bit before you notice any real return.

My point is that twitter is mostly fully of inane drivel, little real useful information ever comes out of there, other then finding out what so and so is having for dinner.

I had an account there but I didn't see the point. I don't read up on or bother with "celebrity" news (seriously, are most of them people worth celebrating?), I get all my news via BBC or Macrumors.
I can see why it's caught on. It's short and to the point, built for people with either hectic lives or short attention spans.

No one I follow posts inane drivel. What I see on my twitter page is all quite useful information. I am yet to read what someone is having for dinner.

Twitter is not for you - that's fine.

I find it useful.

I think Twitter is something people either "get" or don't. I didn't get it either until I had a reason to use it and found myself rather liking it. It's simple and in some cases can be a rather useful tool.

I admit, I have tweeted about dinner once or twice but I am certain my followers enjoyed it very much. :D

Sometimes it's used to discuss the inane drivel people on macrumors post.

This post sums up what Twitter is mostly like. All I get is a 160 word post to sum up what I'm doing and I find it rather lame, although I log in 2 times a month. After some time, it became a fad to me.

Twitter is more than just posting if you are taking a **** at the time. Many news organizations post news alerts on there. If a lot of your friends are on there, it's free texting. I love Twitter. I get a lot of my news from Twitter. I heard it on Twitter first that Michael Jackson and Patrick Swayzee died, among other news stories, too.

I guess Twitter just isn't for you then.

Sign me up as another person who doesn't get Twitter. And I'm no old fogie...just a college student who couldn't care less about being updated about every pedantic detail of peoples' lives.

That's the thing about Twitter: you choose what you want to read. If someone just posts "inane drivel" you have the choice to just not follow them. You follow the people you think are interesting and have something to say.

But that's exactly like Facebook. You can choose to get someone's status feed or not. You can set it to get what kind of information you want. If someone only posts "inane drivel" you have the choice to just not follow them, as well (and their posts will not appear in the status feed page). If you choose not to get their status feeds, you still have the option of going directly to their page are reading those posts if you want.

People have mentioned news feeds and whatnot. Well, you can get that on Facebook. I get traffic news, weather updates....even Mac news posts. These are exactly the same thing as Tweets.

Not a single person has explained how Twitter functionality is different than Facebook. Does it send Tweets to your cell phone so that you don't have to go on a computer? That would be the only thing that would make it different than Facebook. Otherwise, Twitter sounds identical in functionality to Facebook but more limited in the "extra" features.

If you have Facebook already, why would you also need Twitter? I could understand not wanting everything involved with Facebook and strictly going with something overly simple like Twitter. However, if you already have and use Facebook, you get everything Twitter does and more. Twitter would then be redundant.

I have no idea about twitter - I've lived all this time without it, and I suppose it's just more of the same - narcissism & attention seeking for those wanting validation for their life actions, by total and utter strangers.

The whole concept confuses and bemuses me - people take all this technology SO SO seriously. Twitter - exists for it's own sake, to attract twits. At the end of the day, it is just another blob of pretty HTML, competing for your attention so that it can drain your life dry, wasting every second you are alive with people's endless and empty verbal diarrhoea, as you sit perched on the edge of your mobile device, waiting for the next newsflash: "Karen has just got off her fat arse, and gone outside to cut the grass" - WOW Twitter, I wouldn't have wanted to miss THAT!

*sigh*

Get the f___ off the net, and go and explore the REAL world!!!!.

I get alot of News Stuff from Twitter mainly Cnn etc I also follow alot of Iphone Devs so i can get updates on the next updates etc also do the same with Vid Game companys Like EA Naughty dog etc. I have a few Celebs mainly Rainin wilson Spelling? aka Dwight from the office it took me a while to get it but once you do get it its very handy.

I hate facebook but I love twitter. Facebook and the inane drivel and endless LOOK AT MY LIFE IT'S SO COOL photos and posts that goes on there annoys me.

I've always kind of been interested in the pointless minutiae of people's lives though. I enjoy all the silly stuff people on twitter have to say :)

Ive like facebook but the way they keep changing the Damn layout its been geting from gret to worst to horrible Right now i'm using Tweed Deck and the 360 app just cause the web layout sucks so much.

It's useful for me. . . and that's pretty much it.
It's not for everyone and it's really boring/pointless if you have no followers and/or you're not following anyone.

I have over 300 followers and I only follow around 92 (Close friends and entertainment I like)

But I can't stand the Britney porn bots! Lol.

I just remembered a few ways in which Twitter is different than Facebook:

Once I was having trouble with my Mac. I posted it on Macrumors but because of the time it was I wasn't getting a lot of responses. So I posted it on Twitter, not expecting any responses, just to vent. 5 min later a guy from Germany replied to me, asked me a few more questions and helped me fix my problem.

Why did that happen?

On Facebook only your "friends" can see what you post. On Twitter anyone can see what you post and anything is searchable. So someone can search about macs to see what people are saying. Which is what happened in my case: the guy was searching "mac" and came across my post and decided to help.

Another helpful use of Twitter for me: I write in a mac related blog. In my articles there's a link to my Twitter page. People can give me feedback through there and I can easily communicate with everyone. On Facebook I would have to add everyone as friends for them to see my updates, which is something I really don't want to do since if I did I would have all their updates on my Facebook feed. Twitter allows me to be followed without having to follow someone back (and the opposite).
