No. You two FIND it to be that.

I find it to be very usefull. I don't follow a single celebrity. I use it like an RSS aggrigator, that I can talk back to.

Today - I've posed questions about Mars rovers, and the official twitter feed ( I know who that is ) and a Mars Rover driver, and someone else all on the Mars Rover team have all chipped in with ideas and suggestions and they've gone off to have a look at what some friends and I found.

Last month - I was asking questions of one of our BIS government ministers - I ended up getting a phone call from a government department to fill me in the details of what I was asking about.

And actually - I lied - I do follow a celebrity - Adam Savage from myth-busters - who posts cool pictures from the set when they're making a new series.

Twitter is inanity and utter narcissism.

As is making sweeping disparaging statements about things that simply don't do it for you.

P.S. djellison - I didn't know Adam Savage was on there. I bet he is an interesting one. Thanks for the heads up on a new person to follow. :)

Another helpful use of Twitter for me: I write in a mac related blog. In my articles there's a link to my Twitter page. People can give me feedback through there and I can easily communicate with everyone. On Facebook I would have to add everyone as friends for them to see my updates, which is something I really don't want to do since if I did I would have all their updates on my Facebook feed. Twitter allows me to be followed without having to follow someone back (and the opposite).

You can send messages to people not in your friends list on Facebook.
Recently I tried hunting down an extension for an old application suite I still use, I needed the source code and stumbled upon the coders Facebook account. It was private so I sent him a message, the source was dead and buried but nevermind (he was also a friend of a MR regular too, small world!).

I didn't get it, either, for a long time. But spend a little time with it, hook up with some friends, start following people and organisations that interest you, and before too long, you'll have more useful information and interaction than you can deal with. And some good jokes.

Personally, I don't have a great deal to say on there. I'm a bit private, not organised about it, nor do I use it as a business tool... but it's a way of keeping in touch with people and news with very little commitment (if that's what you want), unlike a FaceBook page or emails.

There's a very good reason why it's taken off so quickly, and that's because it's powerful and easy to use. Those who dismiss it out of hand are only depriving themselves of something that is extremely useful.

I follow a bunch of nice people here from MacRumors, some other friends, some news and political commentary stuff, some music news... and of course, David Lynch.

This baffles me. People like to text, right? They like to mms, right? Twitter lets you do this for free. Just get a good app, and it's free texting. You do not have to make statements like "i am on the toilet" or "i am sitting down"... That's just that stupid freaking commercial that people see that makes them think that that is all Twitter is good for.
