This is not in defense of Apple, it's about misplaced blame. For instance, Apple wasn't charging you 39.99, LinkedIn (Microsoft) was. Apple didn't raise the price, Microsoft did. Because Microsoft didn't want to pay 30% - even though Microsoft would charge Apple 30% for the exact same thing if sold in their Xbox Marketplace.
Apart from hardware, what does Apple sell elsewhere? Imagine that for a 29,99€ transaction there’s an additional 10€ going to Apple every freaking month!

Definitely fake outrage. Nothing is being taken away that was free.
I don’t think that outrage was fake when some scammers created fake accounts to drop stock prices of certain companies.
That means that “verified” accounts were anything else but verified.

I didn’t mention 3rd point. Earlier, some accounts had their blue tick earned by sustained work of writing quality content on Twitter, and now their achievement is leveled out to someone who «I just paid 8 bucks”.
Probably they have to create two type of ticks: just paid “premium account” and hard earned “distinguished account” (paid or not).

I’ve never used twitter other than a sample at launch year, and maybe another couple of month run a few years ago. Offered very little value to me personally. Little quips from the general population I can do without. If I’m on a tech site or motor site etc, sure. General stuff about everything.. pass.

Why would...anyone pay for this? What's the benefit again?

At this point, it's for blue checkmark verification and features like tweet editing capabilities. Verification and other features may be worth it for those who make money from Twitter usage one way or another such as celebrities and companies/brands.

Doesn't getting Twitter Blue add extra features? Not that I can remember what they are offhand, as they're almost certainly not worth $8 a month (or $11) 😅

Yes, things like tweet editing. It's not just for the blue checkmark. Even before Musk took over, Twitter was charging $4.99/month U.S. for Twitter Blue (without the checkmark) subscriptions.

Why would anyone want to pay for this?

Probably because they make money from Twitter one way or another and find the blue checkmark and features like tweet editing capabilities beneficial to their "brand." Others may be Twitter (and/or Musk) obsessed and want to show their support.

There are largely two scenarios of paid subscriptions:
- Positive, when payment gives you some new perks.
- Negative, when you suddenly have to pay for what was free just yesterday. Here is where outrage comes from.

Also, Twitter immediately crapped in own pants by selling blue ticks to impersonators and other non-legitimate user accounts.
Exactly if updates keep coming and the sub is reasonable, I don't mind, but some are crazy like $$$ a week :(

Definitely fake outrage. Nothing is being taken away that was free. The platform still works just like it did before this subscription started, minus the kid abuse and extremely biased filtering. There are some perks coming with the subscription though. Also, users can still sign up online and pay the $7 or make the purchase in-app and pay the Apple tax.

What have you developed, of this scale, that ran flawlessly from its initial launch/re-launch?

That's not entirely true. Musk even said himself that non-paying accounts would have their posts demoted by the algorithm.

Does Apple even allow a company to charge one price on App Store and another off their platform? I remember a reason some companies decided not to use IAP for subscription for this reason that Apple was dictating off-platform pricing as well.

It sounds like posts were being demoted anyway prior to Elon.

Two different things really, now he is saying pay up or you will get to demoted.

before it was algo stuff and such.

of course, this was last week, this week who knows what that Hindenberg like "CEO" is going to allow or decree.

Company charges the same amount. Apple tops up the bill.

Given that no one will actually pay for this nonsense I’m not sure this is news
