I don't use Twitter but something I liked about it was that it forced people to be concise. That little appeal is gone now.
Concise, or just delete key information to craft misinformation. Either way will keep the text short, but the outcome is quite the opposite.

4000 characters? For Chinese language, that's like a chapter or two of text. 😄 They can just post complete articles/short novels in a tweet.
Except Chinese can’t access Twitter without VPN. But maybe Elong would persuade Chinese authorities to open Twitter in China? :p

You’re right Twitter wasn’t a great functioning business - in fact it barely qualified as a poorly functioning one so changes were necessary. Purging ~60% wasn’t genius; it was plainly obvious.
Which begs the question: why not firing every single existing employee, including those holding visa, and start afresh? Why half-*** it? What’s that? A gesture? Purify with extreme prejudice or don’t bother.

Why didn’t Musk RIF 100% of the employees is the question begged?
Just guessing, to accomplish the daily company needs requires more than zero employees.

So in Elon Musk’s vision, a company only need people with visa to work and support the company. Got it.
Only firing half is so uncharacteristic of him. With his popularity and “charm”, surely people will flock and join.

Hell no. 4000 characters is about five paragraphs of lorem ipsum text.

True.... but not all Tweets will be five paragraphs in length.

Any serious journalist/blogger will still link to their own websites or blog.

Hell... most Tweeters can barely string together two sentences of text. So I'll be interested to see how pervasive this will be.

:p

I think it would be better as currently the limit is pretty less. Most of the people are creating threads to use longer tweets.

I hope Twitter at least puts a "Read More..." link after the first 280 characters so I don't have to scroll past 500-4000 character Tweets - particularly if there are more than one in a row.
That would be the smart move, and behind a content paywall, :p And then next he'll ban outbound links for non-advertisers.

Well, tweets promoting Mastodon are already being flagged as sensitive and thus blocked from view.
There you go, it was to be expected. So much for the 'saviour' of free speech, you can post what ever hateful message you like as long as you don't point to competition or flaws of Elon Musk himself. Yup that is free speech ;)

Why? did you do it? I see countless people hating musk and they are alive and well on twitter

I’m not confident in my interpretation of your inference because I’m unaware of data supporting it. Please clarify what you are saying.

Just wait and see ;)
It’s user base has been peaking since Elon acquired ur FYI
Aww bless, and you know that because Elon said so? Ofcourse he'd say that, he's been reinstating hate speakers and and there is no verification left for bots etc. It's free for all to Elon's personal definitions.

For me, what makes Twitter so valuable is that it is:

1. Real time (news break there faster than anywhere else)
2. Allows me to read multiple perspectives on a breaking event within seconds (e.g. sports game, an unfolding crisis)

With 4000 character tweets, nr 2 goes out the window.

Thus, by doing away with the artificial 280 character limitation, Twitter becomes LESS useful in real time, not more.

If you were actively using twitter you would know

I can't figure out what it is that Twitter "does"? I did Facebook off/on till 2014 and determined it useless. I never did "Tweet", but had an account once and it looked like internet trash strewn all over a digital highway; a wasteland. Why do people spend time looking at it? I read in the papers that Elon Mask bought it; friends and family can't shut up about it. Why is it such an ordeal it is on MacRumors?
If it helps, I use it to promote a blog. My (small, niche) blog is about parental child abduction. You can't just post links to your blog on reddit/forums as that's not cool. Thus, I make likeminded 'friends' on Twitter, read their blogs and share my links with them.

The other thing I use it for is tracking updates from tech engineers. For example I like retro gaming. Lotsa people who develop mods will post progress updates on twitter, so it's decent for tracking them.

The one flaw I find is that the style promotes circlejerking and outrage. As an example, one of my blog posts details a 'mediation' process where our 'mediator' recommended that I accept an arrangement whereby I Skype my daughter (in Japan) monthly as an 'English teacher' and say 'no I'm not your dad... sorry, that was all a lie, wipe it from your mind'. A heap of angry people demanded the mediator's name and my ex's name so that they could go after them. That's not my goal so I refused (and lost 90% of my Twitter friends - many of whom are likely MRAs as a result). My blog's unpopular for other reasons (I'm not a very good blogger - I'm boring). However, IMO a lot of small-time bloggers like me feel the temptation to spread outrage/drama because you're more popular when a group (e.g. crazy, woman-hating MRAs) gets behind you. Whereas when you're sharing some more measured opinions about a niche topic, nobody tends to give a stuff.

I hate twitter but it's one of the few 'marketing' tools I can use for my blog, so I tweet maybe once every 6 months. I also track a few tech experts with it, but that's about it.

---

Why does MR talk about it? Probably because Musk's sarcastic face and arrogant moves draw in a heap of juicy clicks/reactions.
