Twitter to Stop Unverified Accounts From Appearing in Recommended Tweets [Updated]

Their value was heavily inflated. The company was a pile of garbage with no profits, it is revisionist history to act like it was a success story. He knew he was overpaying. He just had so-called "f you money" and went for it. The "value" dipped as soon as the transaction closed and then some more soon after due to advertisers being bullied into pausing their campaigns.

If by "went for it" you actually mean "realized he did something outrageously stupid, tried to weasel out of his legal obligations, was told he was 100% going to lose, and eventually paid for it," then yeah, you're right.

The "free" in "free speech" never referred to the price of something.

And it remains free to tweet there and have your tweets seen by others for free.

That's not what I meant. I was referring to the reason why Musk bought Twitter... so that civilization could have a common digital town square, a place that's "warm and welcoming for all," and to promote free and open speech.

While people can still tweet without paying a monthly fee, you cannot vote in any polls without doing so. Requiring people to pay to vote (i.e. speak/have their voices heard) is antithetical to what he wants and what he (claims he) believes in.

It's really weird how much time some people dedicate to defending Elon Musk. And I know those same people would say it's weird to spend time hating on him as well, but I would argue that there's a huge difference between lower and middle class punching up at vs elevating and defending a billionaire who has proven time and time again to be a generally awful person.

With every boneheaded move, Musk drives more people off the platform and into the arms of Mastodon. Been an active Twitter user for 16 years. I pulled out after it was clear Musk was using his platform as a purveyor of disinformation and fraternizing with the alt-right.

Ivory has made Mastodon mainstream friendly and honestly feeling very familiar, almost like the old twitter. What's been missing was the people that made it a community, and they've been streaming over and it all is starting to feel like I never left.

Twitter was the people, not the platform. Once they're gone, Musk will be left with an empty shell worth nothing.

Things make A LOT more sense when you realized it was not a sink he walked in with, but instead, a cesspool.

I’ll probably delete my account soon, which I’ve had since like 2009.

Honestly, best thing I did. That place was toxic even before he let out all the trolls. Don't delete your account though, otherwise anyone can take your name and old tweets where you were tagged will go to the new account owner. I just deleted my tweet history and locked my account to only my followers.

Imo, good riddance to twitter.

Common these days Freedom for me, but not for Thee. The Cancel ban hammer always close by. Bend the knee you’re golden.

The biggest issue I have is not that Musk wants to charge money for features. Any business should look at various revenue models. But the problem I have is that the value proposition as a user is greatly diminished if I choose to pay $8. Intertwining functional features with status and worthiness of content is a recipe for disaster. It's one thing if you got more features or privileges by paying, but using payment as means to drive the trends and content on the site is like letting first class passengers on plane decide what experience economy class passengers will have or even where the plane is going to land next.

Knowing that any tweet I see from an account I don't follow is probably from a Blue subscribers means that every one of them is sponsored content. In other words, an ad.

Twitter last week also said that it would begin to wind down its "legacy" verified program and remove "legacy verified" blue badges on April 1

I’ll take this opportunity once again to point out how annoying it is that the definition of “legacy” has apparently become “the version that works but that we don’t want you to use anymore in favor of the version that doesn’t work.”

And in other news…

For the past 6 hours, there’s been 2,000+ Mastodon account creations per hour.

This hasn’t happened since December 2022.

@mmasnick@mastodon.social predicted that Elon Musk’s new Twitter Blue policies would result in another Mastodon migration, and it looks like he’s right.

Once Twitter effectively becomes “pay to play”, Mastodon suddenly becomes more appealing.

Some are strange, but anyone thinking Mastodon will ever be relevant is equally baffling.
I think the Fediverse is a whole lot more interesting than Mastodon (although I am on Mastodon) given that Wordpress.com is working on integrating itself in via implementing ActivityPub, Tumblr has had a bounce back and is integrated into the Fediverse etc. Facebook is implementing their own micro blogging code named P92 that'll be integrated via implementing ActivityPub (based on leaks and rumours). If we move away from a centralised to a decentralised internet where billionaires who have more dollars than sense cannot buy their way into dominating the discourse then it'll be good for all concerned.

Side note: The lack of an algorithm in Mastodon is one of the best features - there isn't an algorithm working behind the scenes trying to pit people off against each other, clout chasers quickly finding that there is no clout to chase and bot farmers realise that if there is no algorithm to game there is no benefit to them existing - it's a benefit for all concerned.
