I wouldn't count on the Twitter API being available to third-party client app developers much longer.
That's for sure. At one point it was estimated that 1/3 of Twitter users use a 3rd party app.

The issue they'll likely look at is that the API doesn't include ads. And with Twitter trying to do anything they can to keep from sinking, that means trying to get as many ads in front of as many people as they can.

As you said, there's a good chance 3rd party apps are going away in the future.

If a news feed shows me things I did nor request, that is the very definition of spam.

However I only use apps, if there is no desktop version available. Anything that involves writing text is just to painful on a phone. For texts you need a physical keyboard.

If they are going to have a "for you" and make it default anyway, then tabs are much more convenient than the star thing. I just tried it and it's much better. Also now you always see the options so you don't forget you can switch. The tabs even stay visible as you scroll down so you can switch anytime without having to return to the top.

I give it 3 months before Elon shuts off API access for third party apps and forces everyone to use the official app.
I think I might stop using it if he does that. It might be possible to build an app that just accesses the freely available raw data from a single users' web profile but this would require the user to input them all one-by-one.

Stop messing with this crap. It especially doesn’t work with Twitter which is more real time news based. Having a timeline of tweets Twitter thinks I‘d be interested in but are 8 hours old is stupid.

whats the point of following people when in the end you only see what twitter wants you to see?

same for ig as well
Instagram is the worst. Every other post in my Instagram feed is a suggested post. A lot of them videos and then all of a sudden you’re in a reels interface and not your main feed and don’t even realize it.

As long as the chronological view is still available, I'm not terribly bothered.

You actually can get the Instagram reverse chronological view back if you tap on the Instagram logo upper left corner of the app, then choose "following". That gives you a reverse chronological view, albeit without Stories. This view also somehow shows zero ads, at least for now :) It's kind of buried, but it's there.

Seems like what’s his name just needs to make all of these bad decisions himself, regardless of whether the features have been tried (and failed) so he can just figure it out on his own. He’s behaving as though he truly doesn’t understand how the service he owns works, or is purposefully being blind to anything anyone has told him along the way. He needs to make the rules, even if others have tried (and failed), because he truly believes he’s right.

Im enjoying my month off from TYPING and POSTING on the twitters,
I just "heart" my 8 friends posts once a week.

I do miss Tim Cooks wonderful apple experiences from countries I visited.
as far as the headline, ,I did not really read into the article that much....

and I would never tweet on the iPhone 12 mini
due to the size of the smartphone being too small to post a photo in a park via mobile.

Yea FB has ads once in a while, but Twitter was terrible when I had it on my phone with constant spam notifications. Just uninstalled and went back to using it for feedback when I have an issue with a company

Twitter has made the algorithmic "For You" timeline the default feed that users see when they open the iOS app, a controversial change that the company has tried previously before rolling it back due to a pronounced backlash.

Twitter-Feature.jpg

In a change that is sure to draw the ire of some users, Twitter has removed the sparkle-shaped icon from the top-right of the app's interface that let users switch between "For You" and "Latest" and replaced it with two tabs called "For You" and "Following."

"For You" still shows users tweets from people they follow out of order, sprinkled with algorithmically suggested tweets from people they don't, while "Following" shows tweets in pure reverse chronological order.

While the change technically makes it easier to switch timelines – users can now just swipe between them instead of tapping the star icon – users on iOS will now always see the algorithmic "For You" tab when opening the app, whether they want to or not.

Another notable result of the change is that people who use pinned lists for alternative timelines will now need to perform more swipes to get to those lists.

The move comes after CEO Elon Musk last month tweeted that the "main timeline should allow for an easy sideways swipe between top, latest, trending, and topics you follow," and said that the company would be making the changes soon. As of writing though, there are no options to swipe to trending or followed topics, while the old star button still exists on Android and the web.

Twitter originally used a reverse chronological feed, showing the newest tweets at the top of the app, before it switched to a timeline that placed a selection of top tweets first. That caused consternation among users, and Twitter eventually added the option to switch back to the pure chronological timeline.

As many will undoubtedly observe, Twitter's decision to prioritize its algorithmic timeline now makes it more akin to the way TikTok works. TikTok learns what users tend to view and pushes them to more of the same suggested content with a similar "For You" feed, which boosts engagement. Whether Twitter's algorithms will have the same success rate remains to be seen.

Actually I don’t think this is factual. It’s always defaulted to that. They just changed the UI to be tabs instead of a drop-down.

Fortunately, it's extremely easy to switch back to Following by making one tap. That was a huge problem when it was tried earlier, when it was difficult to switch between feed types.

The worst decision. The whole point of following people is to see the things of people YOU decided to follow. Idiots but what am I complaining, first I started to use Tweetbot (which does not have all this nonsense anyway) before closing my account recently all together.

The timeline is irrelevant at this point, considering that Twitter is now Parler 2.0.

This is tantamount to complaining about a leaky faucet on the Titanic.

But you have to do that every time you open the app. That was exactly what stopped me from using TikTok. You open the app and you see a video from somebody you do not follow.

Probably worth going over to post to see how their UI is maturing.

As soon as that is ripe I’m junking my Twitter accounts.
