If Apple is willing to eat into their iPad sales by having a tablet sized phone, why not just have a phone you can slide into a tablet case and make it function as a tablet or into a laptop case and turn it into the trackpad for a laptop? Maybe with magnets and magsafe connections for easy removal when getting calls. Probably because it would be easily copied by competitors, except the running Mac OS part. That would be impressive. Eventually a phone would be running an M1 style chip, why not sooner?

Great, I can't wait to get back to Apple, but I've been immensely enjoying my Galaxy Fold 2. To me foldable phones are a complete paradigm changer and I don't think I could ever go back. I'm hoping some different concepts come to fruition such as rollable screens instead of foldable, but they are all under the same paradigm.

Just waiting for the inevitable "Why would anyone want a foldable phone?", which will change to "Wow why didn't anyone else think of this?" the minute Apple releases one.
I’m curious about this.
I’m on the bandwagon where I can’t for the sake of me project the usefulness, compact space or success far ahead in the future. I thought the same for Bluetooth headphones, keyboards, mice, ANC, etc “who need this?!” mindset... to then after get a proper taste of it and go all-bonkers-in all that.

Do you think foldables are the future? Would be so nice to have a poll today measuring who would buy a foldable phone and then again one later on after/if Apple announces theirs.

not on my wish list, ever
I find it hilarious when people make this kind of statement about a product that doesn't even exist yet. So closed minded. You probably complained about the lack of physical keyboard on the first iPhone or wondered why you would need an iPad because its just "a bigger iPhone".

It only takes an ounce of imagination to see a use case: when folded, use as a normal sized phone like you always had. When unfolded, its gives you a broader canvas to watch movies, work on documents, use two apps at once, etc. Its like having the benefits of an iPhone pro max size screen (but bigger) in the form factor of an iPhone mini when you're not using it. Tons of people would find this useful.

Was that so hard?

two different prototypes be interesting which one they choose. rather it be a fold more than say the flip.

I think most people will when the price comes down. most won't even about buying a 2k device but as a fold 2 user it is amazing piece of tech. I just wish it ran IOS.

Surely this depends on the end user/scenario? For someone who wants the most productivity on the go, it could potentially be very useful to have apps open side-by-side.
But I just don’t see them being good for productivity at all. I tried an iPad mini last year and I found it to be too small, I got an iPad Air and I think it’s the perfect size.

But a lot of these foldables coming out feels like it has compromises both while folded and unfolded.

I can’t foresee why I will want this but keeping an open mind. It needs to be substantially better and/or different from prior attempts.

Such a setup wouldn’t solve the problem solved by a foldable tablet, is why.

If they can make something like the Surface Duo (but that is actually good) I might buy it.

I won’t be buying a phone with an easily damaged plastic screen. What is this? 2003?

I prefer the trackpad on my laptop to the idea of having to slide my phone into my laptop first before I can use it. It's an extra step and totally ignores the fairly frequent scenarios where I use my phone while working on my laptop. The phone is basically like an additional screen to show more information, to have an additional app running and visible.

I think all those ideas of docking a phone (be it into a tablet, laptop or larger external monitor) have been largely been made redundant by the internet and the syncing of data.

Personal opinion, foldables don’t seem to be better at anything than a smartphone or a tablet. It makes for cool demo, but it seems like a mediocre tablet and phone combo.
The main purpose of a folding device like the Z Fold 2 is that it's better at fitting in your pocket than a tablet. Imagine having a bezel-less iPad mini everywhere you bring your phone. That's the appeal, and it is quite amazing I can assure you.

In contrast to Android, Apple has a big ecosystem of apps for both smartphones and tablets. That could make one big difference right out of the gate for a device like this. The Android foldables often seem more like prototypes or proof-of-concept hardware, because the software side is so glitchy and underdeveloped.

I am not sure if I would have a usecase for a device like this. But I am very curious to see what Apple's teams come up with to make it compelling.

These are probably in extremely early stages of development and they are likely not running iOS 14 or any version. I'm basing this on earlier leaked prototypes we've seen over the years. Well, I never thought I would need a smart watch and here I am with an Apple Watch 3, which I like. So, maybe Apple will be the one to sell me on the concept of dual screen devices. Samsung and Microsoft certainly have not.

Yeah but I feel like it’s too small for tablet viewing and too bulky compared to most modern smartphones.

I’m more intrigued by something like the Z Flip, ultra compact when folded but unfolds into a large phone display. Now if Apple goes that route, I’d be intrigued. I’ve always wanted an iPhone that can easily fit in my pocket, but I don’t want to sacrifice the 6.7 inch display I have.

Even in best case scenario of durability, they will have a fold crease which is extremely ugly and distracting.
so unless they somehow resolve this problem (unlikely) this fold display technology won’t be practical.

It is also of note that Apple has patented a device with two separate displays that can be brought together to create a single foldable device with a hinge, which sounds strikingly similar to the rumored dual-screen Apple foldable.
The kid in me would love it if we could combine more than 2 screens together. The magic number for me would be 5 because I'm a hard core otaku. Form feet and legs...form arms and body...and I'll form the head. Woot!🤩🤩

I was hugely disappointed in One Piece when Tactics 15 failed because one member refused to "dock."😭

I have a hard time imagining how they could make this phone thin enough when folded. If it were almost twice as thick as the current iPhone, I would not be interested at all.
