Have to massively disagree here. Having a tablet sized screen fold up so it fits easily into my pocket is serious innovation. Serious enough that here we are with rumors that Apple is possibly going to use Samsung's screen in a future phone. You can get hung up on what today's Galaxy Fold does not do well, or you can realize that this segment will evolve and improve. As a stockholder of Apple I hope they would not limit themselves to "never", but we all know they are much smarter than that.

If Apple is indeed working on a two panel foldable, where the screens come together to create what looks like a single screen, they’ll have solved the biggest negative that every other foldable has - the plastic covered screen. I recognize that there are a lot of people, especially tech followers, who are too young to realize that early portable tech devices started out with plastic covered screens that all suffered the same fate - scratched screens that lasted barely a year.

There is no way the broad consumer base that Apple has would accept, after 10+ years of glass screens, a soft and scratch-prone plastic screened iPhone (or iPad or MBP, etc.).

It's not the same thing. I'm saying this as someone who initially had no intention of buying a Fold 2 because I thought it would have a plastic screen like phones 10 years ago. It's truly a glass screen, and once you remove the screen protector it feels really close to a glass screen. Not 100% as it still has the inner screen protector, but pretty darn close. I've been using mine with a naked screen for a few months now and I have very little worry about damaging it, at least as much worrying as I would if I had a non folding phone. If anything, since the inner screens are folded shut when not in use, I worry less about them. You really have to own and use one to get the feel of it.

Plus the technology is advancing. Last year the Fold's screen was more delicate, next year it will be thick enough for S pen use. Even Corning is working on folding Gorilla Glass.

As long as Apple keeps making a usable Phablet iPhone and an iPad, I don't care what they dangle to vacuum up the $$$$ of the phone- and wage-slaves. Some day there will be a better tech that comes along and supersedes these clumsy, delicate, and expensive geegaws, and maybe I'll still be in the market. But, I doubt the value will be there for me, especially as a single user device. I know I won't need to be at someone's 24/7 beck-and-call with this kind of ball-and-chain.

This is the New Age's Helicopter-Car in Every Driveway.

I'm still waiting for the stampede to Touch Bar computers just because Touch Bar.

I'll have to wait and see on this one. The jury is still out. I can see the use case scenarios, but until I can hold one in my hands and test the hinge mechanism I won't know for sure. Definitely will not be an early adopter; I learned my lesson on the original iPhone. I waited five years before getting my first iPad and I'm glad I did. Still don't have an Apple watch because as far as I can tell there are no golf gps distance rangefinder apps for it yet. Hoping Apple can add something / improve on what's currently available in the AR / VR space so bring on the Apple VR headset asap.

Surely this depends on the end user/scenario? For someone who wants the most productivity on the go, it could potentially be very useful to have apps open side-by-side.
I rather see iPads that are allowed to work as cell phones then foldable screens on phones that surely will more susceptible to damage. Still don't get why a tablet such as a Mac mini can't be a phone as an example?

I don't want a foldable screen. I'd be afraid of durability issues.

I'd love a foldable phone though. 2 screens would make multi-tasking much easier, and I'd love to be able to mix the Microsoft Duo hardware with an iPhone and iOS.

From a basic users perspective, what purpose in terms of efficiency does a foldable phone achieve? The act of opening to a screen takes more time and is more costly than a single slab.

More or less he form/function argument.

Being a iPhone mini user, I don't believe I am the demographic portion that Apple will try and reach with a product like this. Even though I have no interest in such a phone, I hope Apple hits a home run and shows Samsung how it is supposed to be done.

I get why Apple takes out the adapter, but why would we just assume moving forward ?

Give it your best shot, Apple. Just TRY to make me want a foldable phone.

I like that motorised rollable that was shown off recently.
All the benefits of a small phone changing into a tablet, without any of the issues of needing to put a fold/crease in the screen.
The Oppo X which has been shown off. It seems to be the answer to all the problems which have plagued these other designs up till now.

It's simple, you can carry a tablet in your pocket. You have a much larger screen than a smartphone, but it folds down to the size of a smartphone. Opening my Fold 2 takes half a second, literally, probably much faster than reaching into my back pocket for my ipad mini 5 which is how I used to carry it. Certainly much faster than reaching into a briefcase, or more likely driving all the way home to pick up my tablet.

Folding iPad seems to make more sense to me. An iPad is large, and needs a cover, thus a folding iPad can minimize the form factor when not in use while also “cover” the screen.

For phones, although neat, imo usability can be an issue unless Apple can have a display on the outer side like the Fold 2. Although the idea of a compact Flip-like phone is great, when I take out my phone, I already have the expectation of it being ready to use. Adding a flip means adding an extra step to use the phone, and that can become annoying long term.
