There seems to be a really odd 100% fit between what Apple displays hardcore lovers want and what Apple delivers.

Usually I tell them "You could get an industry standard display and save a thousand bucks" and they tell me that they really really need the integrated coffee-grinding feature and the 9¾K resolution that only Apple provides and that once they've tried this stuff, they could never go back to peasant displays.

I mean, maybe Apple is very good at knowing its customers' needs but there could be another explanation...

As someone who has owned several Apple monitors and non-Apple monitors, I would say that the better aesthetics and build quality along with the much better integration with Apple monitors is definitely worth a lot to me. But perhaps not worth US$1000.

BTW, I'm currently using a third party 28.2" 4K+ 3840x2560 monitor (listed in my signature), and everything was working fine with M1 Mac mini and my M4 Mac mini as well... until I installed macOS 26 Tahoe. Now the monitor won't wake up after the Mac sleeps. My solution to this is just to never let the Mac sleep anymore, but that is not my preference. In general, Apple monitors don't get these types of issues, for obvious reasons. I'm just happy that my issue with this third party monitor is relatively minor compared to what some other people experience.

HDR is essential in 2025 and beyond.
I think that is pretty much standard now in this class of Retina type monitors. 120 Hz not so much though.

Mind you, I don't know if I can use HDR. My current monitor is HDR and it works perfectly in macOS... except for one app. If I use Citrix to VPN into my Windows machine at work, text gets distracting colour fringing in HDR mode. In SDR it looks fine, so I use SDR. This may be a Windows on macOS glitch but it is what it is.

Hope there’s a 6K Studio non Pro XDR.
That's what I want, with HDR, but I'm not really prepared to wait too long for it. I'll likely be waiting until November or so anyway (Black Friday) though or maybe December (Boxing Day) so hopefully Apple will release something by then so I can compare the value.

Well, you have a better excuse. I've never had issues with third party monitors but that can happen.
Personally, I'd rather research a bit what third party monitor is known to work safely to save money but I understand your strategy.

120 Hz. Otherwise, the monitor will be outdated before it even hits the market.

Apple should not try to sugarcoat 90 Hz in any way. Meanwhile, 32" and high-quality 4K miniLED monitors can already offer 240 Hz.
Well, 32” monitors with 4K are “outdated” for me (and I guess most Studio Display users), regardless of refresh rate.

I have a Samsung and had to reset it to factory recently. I much prefer my Studio Display as it just works, although the price point is awkward.

J427 is confirmed as existing. J527 is a Gurman-only rumor, but seems plausible.

J427 could be an update to the current Studio Display, with an IPS Black panel and DisplayHDR 600. Improved camera and silicon. Thunderbolt 5.

J527 could be the rumored (via Ross Young) Studio Display XDR, with mini-LED backlight. Looking at the 4K mini-LED backlights out there, I'd say 1,152 zones, or maybe 2,304.

Please Apple make it multiple inputs. Double TH5, HDMI, DisplayPort whatever works best for you but stop assuming people only want to use their monitor for a single Mac.

Agree, it’s my main gripe. I need to be able to use easily with 2 Macs at least (and I have 3 on my desk 😅).

I wouldn't count on it. BTW, although Apple monitors have lots of advantages for Mac users and I've owned several, the lack of multiple inputs is one reason I'm not prepared to pay say $1000 more for one.

Ironically though, I do occasionally use one of my old iMacs as a monitor now, because Apple allowed its mini-DisplayPort to be used as an input for any DisplayPort device. I can even plug my iPad Pro into for display spanning.

Spot-on. If you're fussy about color and process image files in Lightroom everyday, and wanting a display that doesn't have to be adjusted over a couple years of daily use, there is no better display than Apple's 5K Studio Display at it's price point.

It's not for gamers, people who only surf the net everyday/hanging out on forums, etc. If Apple were to release a 32" version at a reasonable price I'd snap it up stat.

The $1299 Asus 6K ProArt comes from the factory Calman-calibrated to Delta E<2, and even comes with a complete summary printout of the calibration results.

I hope they bring their prices down a bit and included 1 stand that was height adjustable and could be removed to switch to VESA, just like every other monitor maker. I don't mind overpaying for these because there are no other glossy monitors out there that work as well with Macs, but stop gouging us on the stand prices!! Would be great if they were able to reduce the bezels of the ASD and increase the size of the monitor by that much.

Have a studio display 5k. Quite nice but sad it was not on par with the macbook pro 120hz pro display xdr already in 2022. Will buy such an item instantly even at 2x the price. If apple updates the 32” 6k to mitigate the issues (border shadow, few zones) that will however take priority for me. Dream monitor would be that plus 120hz. Not for gaming but for the flexibility of adapting to almost any meaningful framerate while also feeling snappy and smooth on regular creative work.

Honestly, I would be perfectly happy if the current Studio Display didn't cost more than €1,000. Sure, 120Hz is great and expands its uses, but it would definitely be nice to have a relatively affordable monitor for the Mac Mini. I don't want any of this plastic crap that other companies sell.
