Apple..

Work on the software specifically for iPad usage please....

We don't need any new iPad hardware advancements right now...

iPads already have so much unharnessed power that it's bordering on ludicrous.
The blown up iPhone OS running on them is the problem...still

People are screaming for an iPad running iOS yet they don't see Apple already sells such a thing: https://www.apple.com/macbook/

128GB with FaceID (although not mandatory) with a screen resolution in line with the iPad Pro. If I could get 120 refresh rate that would definitely get my wallet out of the pocket.
So more of a mini pro? IIRC the most recent rumour suggested a spec bump of the current chassis (plus pencil support) is more likely, although you never know, they are redesigning the 9.7" iPad so they might do something similar for the mini... At least by giving it this refresh rather than killing it off it does open up the possibility the mini will eventually be updated with these features! I'm considering a mini for on the go media consumption, really all I want is an up to date SoC (A11 or A12) ProMotion would definitely be something I'd like to see brought to all Apple's devices going forward!

Eventually yikes!!!

Its taken apple like 4 years to update the Mini so if you have to wait another 4 years..that would suck. They may as well offer the mini with face ID and a A10 processor to keep the price down and 2 gb ram (64 gb of storage for the intro version)...at least you get increased speed and face id support. The limited ram shouldnt be an issue with that small screen.......retail it for $329 and let it discount to $299 during holiday season. But hey its apple, I see a $349 to $399 starting price for the mini.

I'm hoping they might not leave things quite so long from now on (a fool's hope?) but yeah it would be nice to see something along those lines sooner rather than later! Seems like they might be starting to depreciate 2GB iOS devices now going by the latest iPhones (though there is a 3GB variant of the A10 made for the iPhone 7 plus so that doesn't rule that chipset out).

Oops, I missed the memo that must have read “rather than utilize use we will utilize utilize”. D’uh, utilize does not mean what people use it for, and using it you do not come across more intelligent, actually less educated.

Uhm, you forgot the 9.7 and the 10.5. Now if you are a regular guy looking for a tablet, having 5 different screen sizes and iPads with similar and overlapping internals this is confusing.

10.2 is the new 9.7, and 10.5 will likely be discontinued.

The 2018 9.7” is being replaced by the 2019 10.2”, and I doubt it will be available for sale once the 10.2” is released.

I suppose one could be confused by the 2017 10.5” iPad Pro vs. 2018 11.0” iPad Pro. But with FaceID, the larger rounded screen (with smaller) and $799 price tag, it seems pretty easy to differentiate the 11.0” from the TouchID, large bezeled, smaller 10.5”, the latter explained relatively simply as being last year’s model that’s still available, and $150 cheaper. With an A10X instead of the current 11.0’s A12X, the 10.5 isn’t likely to remain available after the 2019 A13X models get released but I suppose it could. But they do look rather different from each other.

In any case, any confusion between the 10.5 vs. the 11.0 would seem to be easily cleared up. The mini vs. the 10.2 doesn’t seem confusing, nor does the 11.0 vs. the 12.9.

I would really like to know if they would release ipad 7th gen in March or not. Too much conflicting reports, should I go and buy ipad pro 10.5??

Well it’s been March for the last two years, so there’s that... but who really knows?

re: the 10.5, it’s twice as expensive as the current entry level iPad; if you’re willing to spend $649 it’s worth considering whether it might make sense to go with the newer $799 11.0 model instead.

The 11.0 has an A12X instead of an A10X, FaceID vs. TouchID, the magnetically attaching/wirelessly charging Pencil 2 vs the Lightning-based Pencil 1 support, USB-C vs Lightning connectivity, and obviously the bigger screen/smaller bezels overall.

If you were going to get the cellular model, the 11.0 supports more bands and has 4x4 MIMO capability, so-called “gigabit class”. But the 11.0 doesn’t have the Optical Image Stabilization for the rear camera that the 10.5 had, so that’s a point in favor of the 10.5. Except for the CPU and cellular modem, you may consider the other major differences to be preferable on the older model; that’s for you to decide.

There are probably some other differences I’ve forgotten about but I think that’s all the major ones.

Huh, so the basic, non-mini iPad is going to be bumped to 10.2 inches. Would be extremely unfortunate if this translated into a hike in the starting price, but I wouldn't be surprised given the latest trends.

You must only own old Apple products then.

Let me run a scenario with you:

You buy a brand new iPad, a brand new iPhone, and a brand new MacBook Pro. You take everything home and you're super excited to open it all! You grab your iPhone cable to plug into your new computer, but guess what? You can't even plug your new iPad or iPhone into your shiny new MacBook. Why? Because the MacBook has USB-C, and the iPhone does not.

So now you have to spend even more money -- for no good reason -- to buy two new Lightning to USB-C cables: one for your iPad and one for your iPhone. These two new cables now let you plug your phone into your laptop. Yay! Except... Every time you try plug one of these cables into your device, you realize that you accidentally grabbed the wrong end of the cable so it won't plug in. You didn't notice that you grabbed the wrong end at first because USB-C and Lightning are almost the exact same size. So now you're frustrated with yourself because if these two ports are essentially the exact same size, WHY aren't they just the same?? And now you struggle to understand what possible reason could cause Apple to make devices that have almost the exact same ports as each other, but not actually the same ports. You think and think and think, but can't come up with an actual reason. Because there isn't one.

Except wait, there is a reason! It's just not a good one. And here it is: Apple makes a little bit more money by forcing you to buy extra cables, and to buy special "Made for iPhone" certified Lightning accessories. In essence, Apple is profiting off of your inconvenience. The whole "everything just works" philosophy is dead.

But it's 2019, and people have woken up. We now understand that this is what Apple has been doing, and we're fed up with it. We just want products that work together, like they SHOULD. There's not one single good reason for products to have "almost" the same port as each other, but not actually the same port. It only serves as an inconvenience to customers. There's no GOOD reason to keep Lightning in future products, unless Apple wants to continue to annoy their customers.

Continuing with the scenario: A few months down the road your wife decides to buy a new iPad Pro because it will help her immensely with her illustration business. She loves drawing on iPad Pro with the new Apple Pencil 2! It's so smooth and powerful, and it inspires her creativity. One day she decides to plug it into her MacBook to sync some movies to it, and guess what? Her cable has the same port on both sides! Cool! And both ends of the cable will seamlessly plug into either device. Ahhh, so satisfying! There's no worrying about plugging the wrong end in. Everything just works!

And then you're even more frustrated with Apple because if they can add USB-C to iPad Pro, you know that they can add it to iPad and iPhone too. But they just won't do it for some reason! So you remain annoyed for the foreseeable future, because you live in a world where Apple products are super inconsistent even though they don't have to be!

Wow, do you really think Apple is intentionally providing an inferior experience just to make the minuscule revenue on some lightnight cables and MFi program?? I wish I could say that’s just cynical, but the reality is that’s just bad business sense. I know Apple is a profit motivated company, which is why they are incentivized to provide the best possible experience to their customers.

There are numerous reasons for Apple to not switch ranging from wanting to provide the best, controlled user experience to profit motivated reasons (not just accessory costs, but also changes to manufacturing, etc). But the primary reason that Apple is hesitant to switch is because of just that, it’s a major connector switch to their ONE BILLION active iOS devices. Please let that sync in for a moment. Do you remember how much hate and negative media hype there was with the iPhone 5 simply because apple switched the connector? And that was for a clearly superior connector. Much smaller, more durable, reversable. And there were only tens of millions of active iPhones/iPods. Now there is, I will repeat, ONE BILLION active iOS devices that are currently using the lightning connector. To switch out for another cable that the average customer will not see one iota of benefit from? “geez looks like the exact same thing, but now I have to replace all of my accessories?! Thanks for the money grab Apple!” It makes some amount of sense for the iPad Pro to go USB-C because it’s geared for a smaller number of people, and a higher percentage of them will benefit from the advantages of USB-C.

Maybe one day Apple will switch to USB-C if it continues to become more and more mainstream (thus a reduced backlash for the change), but I think it’s reasonable that Apple is hoping to go 100% wireless within the next 5 years, and if so, then it doesn’t make sense for them to switch at all. Just hang with lightning until then.

The rumor is mentioning two new iPads Pro , so I assume that both of them will have Smart Keyboard and pencil 2 capabilities, right?

I’m pretty sure we can say goodbye to the $329 iPad (mid-range size). The Pro’s start at $800 (or $650 for previous gen model). That’s a huge gap between the iPad and the pro. I’m gonna speculate that this new mid-sized iPad 10.2” will take a page out of the iPad Pro 11” rulebook. Same footprint with a slightly wider aspect ratio, removing Touch ID for FaceID. I’m also speculating (hoping) it will get a smartconnector. Aside from those changes, there could be a few other minor changes. Maybe laminated screen or improved speaker or TrueTone, etc (and of course an updated processor).

But the price is definitely gonna bump. Possibly stay as low as $399 or $429, but if I were a betting man it’s gonna settle back to the original iPad $499 price. This price increase will be partially enabled by the updated mini 5.

The strategy for the mini 5 I’m less certain of. I could either see a) only processor bump with all else staying the same, $329. Or b) shrink the bezels, go FaceID, but increase to $399. I think it depends how much Apple wants to eliminate TouchID across the line.

@Mad Mac Maniac

Agreed - Good take..

Tim noticed that supremely good value happening with the normal iPad at $329 and realized there is margin to be had and gouging to be done here..

Yeah it’s kind of disappointing. The $329 iPad has been the one bright spot in Apple’s pricing portfolio these past few years. Apple was really starting to make a name for itself in the “affordable luxury” space around the 2011-2015 timeframe. The iPad/iPad mini, the MacBook Air, even the iPhone’s and Apple Watch seemed reasonable luxury pricing. But this new mess of overpriced/underpowered MacBooks and price increases to the iPhone X, iPad Pro, Apple TV, Apple Watch... Oh and the HomePod. Hasn’t been the best look for Apple. But with flattening/declining sales, I guess they’re doing what they can.

I still have tons of Apple stuff (iPhone, watch, MBA, ATV), but right now the only things I could honestly recommend to the average person would be the iPhone XR, iPad, and maybe Apple Watch (probably series 3)/AirPods if they had particular needs.

Well if he wants to quit, I can certainly take over. Here's my report on the upcoming iPhone:

"In a thorough research note outlining Apple's plans for 2019, Apple analyst Madoka describes his outlook for the next iPad lineup. According to Madoka, Apple plans to release new iPhone models, each equipped with an upgraded processor, later this year."

Holy cow this Madoka guy is the dumbest idiot alive. The gall of him predicting things I pretend to know already. Every time he predicts anything a million kittens spontaneously catch fire. The guy is so bad I wish he would die. I just can not say enough bad things about the man even if my own opinions are extremely uninformed, misguided and littered with puerile vitriol.

Have fun being an analyst.
