I love the sound of mechanical keyboards. Reminds me of the old times.

That doesn't sound like a "loud clanking keyboard" to me - but I will have to hear one in person first. Nearly every one of my desktop keyboards is definitely louder than that, though.

I could imagine when you are in a conference room people might get annoyed by my typing on this new MBP.

There is one quick way to piss me off.
Complaining about my keyboard noise.

Why: the loudest keyboard available today is a whisper when compared to the quietest keyboard shipped in 1999, but people seemed to be able to carry on with their lives then (and before that: in the days of typewriters).

I suppose humans haven't lost the ability to survive ~30 dB from a regular keyboard?

Keyboard noise pollution is down substantially since then, so it stands out more now.

Here is a real comparison:

It's actually not THAT much louder than previous MBPs. It does sound more precise with less random clutter noise. But it is much quieter than mechanical keyboards.

To me it sounds better, but if it actually feels better remains to be felt later.
That doesn't even sound louder to me just different.

I'm of two minds on this issue. I saw a video already and the person was complaining about how loud the keyboard is.

First, like some who have posted here, I like the "old fashioned" mechanical keyboards, i.e., the old IBM mode M keyboard, but when I'm using a mechanical keyboard I'm at my desk.

On the other hand with my laptop, I'm in settings where clacking on my keyboard can be a bit distracting to others and that's where I'm not sure about that. Regardless of the sound, though, the key travel is what gets me the most.

I'm not sure how much of an issue this really is, but then its probably one of those, death by a thousand cuts type of thing. that is the keyboard itself isn't show stopper, but then you have USB-C, or magsafe, or no SD ports, or HDMI, etc etc.

Hmm, let me think about how this will sound in various situations and if I'm okay with it. I'll have to wait until December for my MacBook Pro anyway :(

When I was last week at the Apple Store I was doing test writing on it. I knew it was the new butterfly keyboard, so I was aware of a little change. When I typed I was like OMG IS THAT LOUD
nevertheless I ordered it. If I don't like it after some days, they will get it back

This is something that would probably really bug me but when I was testing this in store it didn't seem much louder than the old macbook pro. If I typed hard though it was really loud but I don't type that hard so it seemed fine to me when testing. I'll really have to see when I get it I guess but so far I liked the keyboard.

i thought they designed it to be like that. Otherwise no one would know that you have new mbp because they took the glowing apple away. now everybody can hear that there is a dude with new mbp...

if the noise is loud, that will be annoying at nights.

I read that there is a bit more travel designed into the v2 butterfly which may contribute to a more pronounced keystroke sound.

When I type on an rMB (early 2016) the keys are reasonably quiet (not as quiet as my 2015 13" MBP) but when my wife types her nails hit the key EVERY time and each key stroke is accompanied by a click. Drives me nuts. :)

I really really like the design, speed and especially the beautiful screen of my new non TouchBar MBP.

But man oh man, typing on this MBP feels like emptying a AK47 machine gun. Even if I try to press the keys gentle. The sound is like really loud.

I could imagine when you are in a conference room people might get annoyed by my typing on this new MBP.

So I take it you've never come close to even touching an AK-47 then?

If you say that you type on a mechanical keyboard and that others are not bothered must mean you are living in a basement with a neck beard, hooked up to a stationary computer with nobody around you to be bothered.

Not me. Private office, with multiple system with multiple monitors. We provide same setup for all employees. It a bit of cost, but the productivity gain of people being able to customize their work space, systems setup, and SHUT THE DOOR so they can concentrate, is worth the money. I love my mechanical keyboards.

An open office is my description of hell.

I am curious because I am deaf I can't hear or speak at all but I wonder did you hear keyboard noise during Apple keynote event two weeks ago?? If not, maybe Apple is going to recall for defective keyboard noise?

All that is irrelevant if they all wear headphones.

Of course you are going to find fan boys who justify their purchases by saying the sound is okay. 99% of people would however prefer not to have to listen to the annoying loud sound.
Aren't made up statistics like 99% cool.... but still made up...

So keyboard sounds are now classified as a trigger noise to snowflake types ? ;)
