I really really like the design, speed and especially the beautiful screen of my new non TouchBar MBP.

But man oh man, typing on this MBP feels like emptying a AK47 machine gun. Even if I try to press the keys gentle. The sound is like really loud.

I could imagine when you are in a conference room people might get annoyed by my typing on this new MBP.

It doesn't make sense to design a keyboard that makes a clicking noise this high, while otherwise trying to make the machine as quiet as possible, regarding the SSD and very low (almost non-disturbing) fan noise.

Can it for Apple be technologically possible to make a more quiet or less clicky butterfly keyboard with about the amount of travel as the new Pros (or a bit more travel)?

The OP has launched a very important issue for many of us.

If emptying an AK47 is anything like emptying an M16 (I've never fired an AK, but shot a lot with the M16), you're saying the new MBP's keyboard is FRIGGIN' AWESOME.

I'd rather be using an iPad if the conference room is quiet. Touchscreen keyboards FTQW (For The Quietness Win).
Using a touchscreen to type to avoid noise is like walking instead of taking the car. Yes, it will be more silent BUT...

Having owned the 2015 and now 2016 rMB with very similar keyboard, you get used to it. I even kind of miss the noise on other laptops :)

it's nice a few people mentioning here that you will get used to it. I know I will get used to the keyboard. But please read the topic title, this has nothing to do with adjustment of the keyboard.

Even if you get used to the keyboard, the heavy sound wont get all of the sudden away. Last few days I am typing really gentle, sound is still there.

This machine will and shall produce (a lot) of sound while typing, and people around you will certainly hear when they are typing on their Windows laptop without making ANY sound from their keyboards.

I know a lot of Apple fanboys dont like criticism , I am aware of that ;) ;)

Again, I still really like my new 2016 rMBP, but its definitely a (heavy) noise maker and this has nothing to do with adjustment to they keyboard

If the walk is less than 30 minutes, and especially if parking sucks, I'll walk.

But I'm in DC, which isn't exactly the same as everywhere else.

I had almost settled on getting a refurb 2016 MB (looking to replace my iPad 3 with something I can program on) and came upon this thread. Of course it's hard to notice any noise while testing in the store, but this video seems to demo what OP is saying. Maybe a 2015 MBP is in my future.

Why does everybody keep posting this video with this dork over and over and over again I don't get it

Exactly my point. No problem writing two sentences on a touch screen. But keeping notes in a meeting or seminar for hours? No thank you.

I now see what this thread is about. Just picked up a 13 MBP for my daughter for her for school and the keyboard is pretty loud. I could type really fast on it though.

If you want the old style feel and sound then go get a Magic Keyboard and pair it to your new MBP.

What really, really bugs me is when I'm in the library and people drop their textbooks on a table. It sounds like a box of grenades going off. The only thing that's worse is when they chew gum or clear their throat. It sounds like a dozen diesel generators.

Reading your post i was like "that's just what i would do when the bus from DuPont circle to Adams Morgan was taking too long" and then i saw that you live in DC too :D

Yes, this is exactly the important point. If the keyboard creates clicking noises, it will still be an annoyance to the user AND to the other persons in the room, in a lot of different kinds of settings. Apple should try to make a keyboard that doesn't make so much noise, when used in a normal way (not hammering on it).

Thanks for the additional info about adjustment versus noise. I think it's out for me then. If it were in my workplace (lots of white noise, people talking, and I'm in a cube) it wouldn't matter. But I need a new machine for home, something to type on while the TV is on. Hello 2015 model!

I got my new MBP 2016 today and wonder about the clicksound of the keyboard. Nearly every button sounds different. o_O

Some examples

Q - hollow
G & H - quite noisy
O & P - totally quiet (normal/as expected)
Space - damn cheap

Is that similar to your MBs / is it normal? I am clear that the new keyboard sounds differently and on no keyboard every key sounds the same, but this extreme spread is strange I think.

Ha!

I was out late a couple nights this week and was taking Metro back home. When I got to the Chinatown station to switch lines, the wait time for the next train was almost as long as it would take to walk. I left the station.

I can type extremely quietly on this new Mac keyboard at a reasonable speed. My advice would be to keep your fingers close to the keyboard and to "press" the keys and not slam them which is what I imagine you are doing. You'll be typing faster and quieter in no time.

The new keyboard has less travel. When you type in the old keyboard most of the travel absorbs the downward pushing force when you type, hence soften the sound it would originally make. Now with the new keyboard, you guys are using way too much force to type. Because each click registers quicker and easier, all that "extra force" transfer to sound, resulting you thinking the new keyboard is louder, while it is actually you making that sound by using the same force you used to use on older keyboards.

very brave and kuddos! Did you knew that are also people care about others? Or you just simply don't care about people around you? then I totally understand your point of view

Oh, I do care about others.

I volunteer at a charity and all that.

Having seen a man about to literally die of cold on the streets two weeks ago, I don't think that my keyboard noise in a well-heated room has the potential to kill people.
Golf-ball typewriters didn't kill anybody in the 1970s, and humans are the same, so I really think nobody's life is at risk, except perhaps hipsters who might kill themselves.

You can see it this way: instead of volunteering I could take a second job instead and be able to afford a 2016 rMBP like yours (fantastic machine, I'm actually happy for you) instead of the old, clunky, noisy, non-chiclet PC laptop I carry around.

However, because I care about others, I won't.

Well @Geert76 you saved me a bit of cash and irritating noise. I just ordered a refurb 2015 MBP, the $1189 256/8GB model. Kind of upsetting to resort to older technology, but it'll hold me over for a few years until Jony can come with a silencer for his machine gun keyboard. ;)

Just want to say congrats. I bought the same a few weeks ago. This has been a helpful thread as people share their experiences with the 2016.
