I've ordered a BTO MBP 16 inch on the 19th of January and received it on the 27th of January. Apple initially said it would be delivered by the 7th of February. I wait a few days after I read some reviews. Selecting one that has over a 1 TB in capacity turned out to be much better performance wise.

Don't blame you on this, as 2TB is the sweet spot for me, especially after coming from 256GB and that was dropping down to it after having 5TB on my personal Linux box. I was barely able to keep that 256GB in my mid-2011 13" MBA under 80% utilization for a good 6 years before making the jump to 2TB in my M1 MBP. The key for me is that 4TB and higher wouldn't work because as a sysadmin, I always gauge my space for backups to be 1.5x the full amount of the internal drive, and my NAS has 4TB in RAID 1. So I have room for growth for backups in case of any issues, and with TM knowing when to roll off old backups, I am assured that I won't run out of space on my NAS.
Besides, if I need 8TB of space in a laptop, I have issues.

I tend to set up three Time Machine backup destinations for each Mac and also use iCloud and OneDrive for all important files. Maybe it's too much, but disk space is cheap and the peace of mind feels great. Served me well many times when I needed to restore after a repair.
I can see needing 8TB when you need to edit 4K/8K ProRes or something in the field.
Mine has shipped and is scheduled to deliver on 2/3! 🎉

mbp 16 inch 8tb 96gb -- in memphis. scheduled to get to me here in los angeles by 3 feb. i am hoping since its in memphis (its passed customs) it may get to me a bit sooner.
The customs thing is just an artifact of the way companies like Fedex update the status. I've seen it go all over the place for iPhones, Macs and everything like "Shanghai -> Anchorage customs clearance -> Tokyo -> Anchorage documents received -> Shanghai -> Louisville Kentucky, cleared customs -> Anchorage -> ..."
Slightly exaggerated, but you get the idea. I doubt that Apple products ever get held up in customs, it's probably all done via documents.

so now its here in LA at the main fedex hub. says "international shipment release". however, since im not scheduled until 3 feb it looks like it may just sit there a few days...

That is exactly what will happen. FDX will not release any packages ahead of the delivery date, including if one goes to the facility to pick it up themselves. At least UPS gives you the option to pick it up at the facility instead of waiting for the day of delivery.

Fedex used to be the holy grail of carriers, now it's UPS.
I'm now dancing the delivery tango:
- The Deliveries app says "12 days" in the overview.
- The same app says "11 days" in the details and "refreshed 15 hours ago".
- Apple's Website says "Mon Feb 06". (7 days)
- Tracking on Fedex.com says "2/2/2023 before 12:00 pm" (3 days).
Looking forward to the Fedex bait-and-switch they've been pulling for the last few years: On the day before the scheduled delivery, the delivery will switch from "by 12pm" to "by 8pm". This will steadfastly stay the status even after it hasn't been delivered by 8pm. At 1am, it'll change to another delivery date of whatever.
Has anyone had this happen before? My BTO 16” MacBook Pro was supposed to be available for pick up yesterday January 30. (original pick up date was January 27 ) from the Apple Store. Yesterday, in the Apple Store app, it said ‘shipping to the store ‘ and ‘available for pick up today’. I waited for the email confirmation to let me know it was available for pick up, but that email never came. Today it says ‘shipping to the store’ and ‘available for pick up January 30’. I am going to call Apple soon and ask them when I can come get my new computer but I’m just wondering has anyone else experienced this before?

In most cases when something like what you described happens, it's because of issues on the shipper's end, not Apple itself. The store likely won't be able to tell you when it will arrive, as CTO models are usually drop shipped and not a part of the normal freight deliveries. I've seen this happen when ordering items from multiple companies (Best Buy, Amazon, etc.)
Okay, but if I'm reading the other post right, it said "Available for pickup January 30" on January 31st. (It's not "pick up" in this case because the noun is "pickup").
Having something like that in the system is simply inexcusable. Maybe that's not what the poster meant, but the delivery processes are riddled with this kind of vague garbage.
If I order something from any company, it's that company's responsibility to deliver it to me. Using the carrier as an excuse only goes so far. I have no problem with the occasional hiccup, but Fedex has declined a lot over the last ten years or so, so much so that I dread their deliveries and would rather have UPS, who've been nothing but reliable in the same time frame. (This might vary by locality.)
Apple has also been using bottom feeders like Deliver-It (a local L.A. company) that have solid 1-star ratings on Yelp and elsewhere to deliver smaller orders like Apple TVs. The results were as expect, with poor tracking options and late deliveries.
I think this is inexcusable. It's tempting for some company to save a few dollars on deliveries, but they should give customers a choice. I paid $8 for earlier delivery and then I'm still going through all this Fedex garbage, and Apple is unable to read the data from Fedex.
Just for sh*ts and giggles, here's the status:
Deliveries app: 7 days
Apple site: Shipment Delayed
Fedex: Thursday (tomorrow) before 12:00pm

Apple still says Monday the 6th (and I'm more and more inclined to believe this).
Until about a minute ago, Fedex steadfastly said "Delivered by 12:00pm" today. The plane left Memphis, TN at 3.06 allegedly (now shown in the history as 8.35, so something doesn't add up).
It looks like they now got their Cheeto dust fingers on my package as it arrived from Memphis and now it's suddenly "Delayed" with an exclamation mark and projected to be delivered tomorrow by 12:00pm. Everybody but Fedex could see that delay from ten miles away. UPS gets their planes in during the wee hours of the morning and then goes to "out for delivery".
Now the package is "In transit" in a Fedex location somewhat nearby, translation: Nowhere in particular.
My prediction is that tomorrow, they'll either keep it "In transit" or will do some "Processing" until the early afternoon and then they may put it "On Fedex vehicle for delivery", only to never actually arrive or to silently put a note on the door during the one minute I'm out of the room during the 12-hour delivery window.
If this would have been UPS, I'd have the machine in hand right now.
I'll definitely contact Apple to discuss where exactly the $8 went that I paid for earlier delivery.

Exact same information as yours - exact tracking points and hours - exact change in status to delay from before 12:00 noon today to tomorrow (I am in southern CA) - THEN. at 11 AM I get a text from Apple that "today's the day" . I track it again and it says "out for for delivery" - and then, surprised delivered at 11:56 AM. - Will open it later today...
Yes, I'm in the same area. No text, no delivery. I'm about 9 feet from the door. I'll have to leave later in the afternoon.
I'm happy for you, but it just goes to show what kind of a garbage operation Fedex has become. Gotta love their history with the dates in "Ascending" order.
(In case it's not immediately obvious: In an ascending order, the 29th comes before the 30th.)
Also notable is that "International shipment release - Import" happened 4 times. Has to be incredibly difficult.

Probably time zone differences. Hopefully yours is delivered no later than tomorrow. Agree on awful FedEx. These days my experience is as bad with UPS, DHL, post office and Amazon. When things don’t go right they blame weather or Covid.

I doubt the time zone differences. Nothing in the world can be 7.15pm on the previous day when it's 9.44pm or later in Shanghai because no place can be more than 24 hours ahead or behind another. They're just too "intelligent" to put the history into a proper order. (Additionally, sending shipment information has to be the first action.)
I don't have any bad experiences with any of the others you mention. UPS and Amazon in particular are like clockwork here.
I'll definitely ask for my $8 back, and I hope that the support call costs them more than that. For some reason, the delivery with Apple has become 2nd or 3rd rate for me because they're sticking with garbage-tier companies.

Totally agree with the sentiments above in that Fedex has really gone down hill, I now avoid them at all costs.

I live in Alaska - we really don't have a lot of options other than USPS, UPS, or FedEx. We also have UPS and FedEx Hubs here, but that doesn't help when there are issues in the Lower 48 that affect shipping.
