Well duh, American carriers haven't had a chance to monitize it yet. We don't do handouts in America.

I dunno. Meh? I rarely see people using there phones held to their ears. Of course people don't really use phones as phones much anyway which is why data is more expensive than voice now. Speaking personally, when I use my phone its usually in my car via BT or else where via speakerphone.

I'm not a fan of cellcos, but I'd rather them put $ into towers so I can use my phone at a ball game where text and data are practically dead because of the concentrated strain on bandwidth rather than have HD audio in some locations. It's not like the iPhone speaker is that bad.

So i am paying money for a "wideband audio" feature that at verizon i cannot access or use?

Be sure you are paying for thousands of features you are not using in everything you have. Specially the computer you are using right now.

It will hapen because peole will hear the higher quality over WiFi and quickly know the difference and it will be motivated to the carriers who can do that on their networks.

As for "the phone does not suport it" It is only software. Things like codes can be in IOS updates

more like european carriers are way behind since they don't have LTE yet

I think you will find that the US 3G signal is non existent and they jumped to LTE because the network was so bad and overdue investment that they had little choice as the whole of the US was stuck on 2G.

Makes me laugh seeing americans bragging about 4G when they pay 45$ a month for a few GB of data.

In the UK i get a whole SKY subscription with TV broadband and Phone package included for less than you pay for mobile data.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch the whole keynote and neither I have seen any news relating to what really interests me. Have anything been mentioned on the hearing aids support, marketed by Apple as "made for iPhone hearing aids" at the iOS6 preview event. I can't see any new features in the release of iOS6 related to hearing impairment ;(

I'll be paying less for shared data :D $110 instead of $140 for my family plan. We don't use more than 4GB (or even close to that). Wifi is everywhere.

I realize there are situations where it makes sense to switch to shared data. However, many people are on limited plans on the old plans and now can't get facetime over 3g... even though they are on a limited plan simply because they refuse to pay $30/month extra for it.

wideband audio to me is more a carrier feature than a device one.
In germany only Deutsche Telekom (in US T-Mobile) supports it.
But they have even the best audi quality without it...

The same with LTE of the iPhone 5... it supports only LTE 1800 Mhz 850mhz an 2100 mhz in the european gsm version ... but our carriers (all carriers) only use 800 (not 850)... a 1800mhz "city LTE" today is only used from Deutsche Telekom...
thats sooo bad... LTE 800 is much better because its covers over 50% of germany even in small villages, at least mine ^^... but without support of this frequency you can only use LTE on the new Iphone in some cities (8 or so) and only with Deutsche Telekom. To us in europe, at least in germany it is not the best LTE device to buy. HTC One XL (L for LTE) does support 1800 and 800 mhz and all big carriers (Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, o2)

But even to me, living in a small 160 people village, the iPhone 5 brings a great boost in network speed because in germany DC-HSPA+ ( up to 42 Mbits) is supportet widely especially from Deutsche Telekom its supported everywhere you have normal hspa /3G

apple should better build more specific devices when it comes to network support...
a true world phone with support of the newest networks around the world and most carriers today is only a dream...

i think we simply have to wait until iphone 5S better 6 or 6S to "Full LTE Support" on most oft the big carriers around the world
also in that 3 years the 4G/LTE network coverage will be much better and most times useable

i didn't had a problem if they announced a iPhone 5 without LTE because, and i think i do not only talk for germany also for US, the LTE /4G networks are not really ready

Seems very un-Apple to roll out a feature that will be so difficult for most carriers to implement. Too bad because voice on wideband is so much nicer.

Seriously? Thunderbolt, no flash support. Those are just two. They like to push the industry to adopt their standard. With Apple's clout it is possible.

Not the same thing. Wideband audio is not an Apple technology.

I was really hoping for AT&T to support HD Voice. Kinda weird that apple is just now support HD Voice since its based on 3G tech. Grrrr.

I apologise for the book I am dropping to whoever has time to read this.

And you are telling me Apple is not innovating?

This is the same as when a lot of people (a lot of them non-Apple customers) bashed the new Retina MBP's when actually it was the 3rd party software developers that didn't support the retina display due to them not being able to catch up with innovation.

Apple is ahead again by offering a feature (Wideband Audio) that won't be fully supported due to related 3rd party services not ready yet.

A lot of people claim Apple is not innovating just because they are not delivering their candy in a brand new wrapper, they fail to see the devil in the details such as:

-Aluminum machined unibody in a handheld device. (advanced production technique introduced in November 2008 with the Unibody MacBooks) that not even the Samsung/Android copycats have been able to replicate.

-4" display (taller only not wider) to keep the quality of customer experience based on ergonomics and not just to "satisfy and compete" with other manufacturer's spec sheets.

-Bumped expected specs. (just because you think it should be faster doesn't mean it is not a freaking challenge to make it happen while not only maintaining but reducing size and weight).

-Non gimmicky yet significant free software improvements.

-Outstanding revised antennae technology after two modified versions from openly admitting fundamental issues in a non beta (released) product.

-Simply the best saturated color and crisp definition display available in the market today.

And that's just scratching the surface, I am not defending Apple, I did (for example) want a better long lasting battery, yes the iPhone was thin enough, this is what Apple is going for though, slimmer yet elegant and quality built products, I hope it stops there and they start filling the available space with more battery.

I am also happy for the people that are satisfied by a Samsung SIII and a Lumia with the gimmicky fatboy/cradle/plate charging station, it is your money, you are the consumer and you choose what is best for you.

I am just very happy that Apple innovates while sticking to their own gameplan, their own ecosystem.

As consumers we have the highest expectations from Apple (we are entitled as Apple products are not particularly cheap), that is why people perceive this latest release as undeserving, most of us don't like the once underdog becoming "the man" while others want to see the shinny company crash and burn, and yet mostly the unbiased users will be happy with their iPhones, Androids, Blackberries and Nokias regardless of the nerd and fanboy trash talk.

Eventhough I never met him personally I do miss Steve, let me clarify that I don't miss him in a weird fanatic way, I miss the man in a self chosen turtle neck-laden uniform delivering the keynotes of the next device that goes with me everywhere I go, passionately keeping it secret and adoringly adding real life features while inspiring and at the same time harshly frustrating colleagues to produce the best of the best time and time again. A man obsessed with quality that brought together some of the most qualified and talented group of people to orchestrate and perform his vision.

The Steve that bent the seemingly impossible into something so intuitive that was hard to beleive that no one thought of it first, and the few times they did they knew nothing as to how to make it big and monetize it.

Yeah he was a jerk sometimes and yes for sure he was a PITA to work with for all we can read in the books and anecdotes but he was also the man that delivered and inspired and that's a fact. He is gone, that is also a fact, he didn't get Apple where Apple is by himself, I hope Mr. Cook and Co. can keep up with the high expectations we all have for them.

That's why there are Apple lovers and haters, that is why there is anger, high expectations, fear of change, melancholy, envy and frustration amongst other feelings, all human emotions rarely seen to be felt towards one single entity let alone a company, a business, a brand, that is how important Apple has become in the mind of the current generations, they took the spotlight by surprise and all of a sudden everyone is watching.

But at the end it is the consumer that has the last word, there is no right or wrong, all that really matters is the endless race to the consumer's heart.

Choose your damn phone and be freaking happy that you have a freaking choice.

The report goes on to discuss the other two mechanisms for providing HD Voice support, which include a CDMA-related codec being used by Sprint and voice-over-LTE technology being pursued by both AT&T and Verizon, but the iPhone 5 does not support either of those mechanisms.

Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) uses AMR-WB as its basic encoding scheme. Anyone with LTE can support VoLTE, although none of the carriers do currently. But the better spectrum use suggests this will come sooner rather than later.

So i don't really agree with this report.

Apple should have omitted wideband audio in favor of NFC. It would have at least been usable in more countries including the U-S of A. :/

If my recent trip to New York is any indication, this would be far less useful to you in the US than here in Canuckia.

During the week I saw perhaps three or four NFC terminals. That was surprising, but what was outright shocking was the complete lack of chip-n-pin terminals. You actually *write* your *name* on *paper* for your Visa transactions?!?

Chip-n-pin became universal up here years ago, and NFC terminals are everywhere. Sadly, NFC cards are not so common. So in that respect NFC might be interesting to me.

But frankly, why bother? Pay with Square gives you 100% of the same functionality, with 0% of the infrastructure.

we should not get annoyed about the LTE / wide audio support problems...
because next year we will buy the ne iphone again... and so on...
and i truly believe apple is noticing the problems with the carriers and will build there own exclusive network for there services like apple TV...
think of it... the time will come i'm sure...

Didn't Philler say "Deutsch Telecom" and "Orange" will support that feature on launch day? Why those small tiny countries but not the united states?

It's because they are small countries. To cover Germany/UK they only need a few towers compared to the US, which needs a lot. For each tower they have to lay down a fiber optic cable.
