Assuming safety is required, why not offer an add on optional service at cost:

If you want you laptop / iPad with you on the cabin

1) Arrive at the Airport an hour earlier than what is required
2) place it in a special box that will be individually checked & scrutinized (x-rays / dog sniffing / residue test)
3) will be delivered to you in that box at boarding - like duty free in some airports

Logistical issues - so a fee to cover add on cost required. May even be another small profit center for airlines and airports. The fee may be high - but worth it for many business passengers on a long haul flight.

If the fee is high and not convenient - check it. If it is worth it to you, pay it.

Again, this is assuming there is a ban, so the extra fee is to cover the extra logistic expense of securing that risk and offering convenience for those willing to pay. Not that different from airports that offer fast pass VIP services to avoid lines.

Way to gouge the average passenger. Just add that to the $3.50 bottles of water at the gate. This is definitely not a solution. If the government is mandating that I need to inconvenience myself by potentially compromising the safety and security of my personal electronic devices, the service you mentioned should be free of charge.

They (TSA, FAA, etc) are trying to keep us safe, I support them all the way. It's unfortunate for our current challenges that our airports were designed during a more simple time of meeting friends at the gate and arriving just before your flights. Our airports needs to be redesigned and then people won't think so lowly of the TSA.

I'm pretty sure the reason folks hate the TSA is crap like demanding a 90 year old woman in a wheelchair stand up for a pat down. And then getting caught on someone's cell phone video doing it in public and practically groping granny

Yet, the National Tourism Office is predicting a record number of tourists to the USA this year with almost 80 million people and a steady rise to 94 million over the next five years.

Predicting and having it come true is two different things.
I can predict that Apple will sell out to Microsoft by 2020, but will it happen.

unfortunately, those kinds of incidents do not build a love love relationship between the public and the TSA. The TSA is an afterthought in it's current iteration, so I sorta look at the design of the airports and what they were designed for and in what time... really nobody is to blame except the monsters who want to hurt others
