Instead of during install, how about the first time the app launches (Safari)?
Which is probably going to be almost immediately after install. And why? Google is a sensible default. I try to avoid their products myself, but there’s no denying that they’re good at what they do.

Frankly, this entire "let's get big tech", which all started out small, is a witch hunt. I would rather our government left innovation alone and focused on other priority issues of the current time.
This is one of, if not the biggest, issues of the current time. Having one company having a monopoly on information retrieval is detrimental to our Republic. A company that has a clear agenda that is very narrow.

Doesn't seem like google has a monopoly on information retrieval, but that is only in my armchair lawyer, humble opinion.

Or they just plain suck. Cream rises to the top.

Goes back to the first point.

That remains to be seen. However, it's like anything else, where highest bidder wins. And who is to say a majority of apple customers, do not have a problem of changing the defaults.

The real question is, do consumers choose google because the others suck and google is best?

You going to kill american innovation, because yahoo screwed itself and bing doesn't really compete? That's the american way.
Kill American innovation. LOL Yahoo and Microsoft are also American companies.

You write as if you have a bias towards Google. Like you work for them or are a stock holder.

Anyways, Google is being sued and we’ll what the court says.

Bias is in good company. This is only my opinion, we’ll see where this goes.

There are times we seem to be in Gilded Age 2.0. One of the things true of the original Google Age is that the Rober Barons had (and used) the power to pick presidents and put people that opposed them they couldn't silence in to positions of power that effectively neutered them. Then their plans regarding William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt went pear shaped and the man they wanted to neuter was suddenly in the last position of power they wanted him in.

The difference here though is the market had create monopolies all on its own. Walmart has become the defacto monopoly in many locations thanks to the fact they can get goods cheaper (and therefor sale them cheaper) and set up their employee's hours such that the majority have to get public aid just to survive hence the term "cooperate welfare".

Instead of going after the true local monopolies that are actually hurting the nation like Walmart and Comcast we get this showboating BS.

I don't think anyone PREFERS using Google Search. It's just one of those things hammered into people's heads. I told another member that when someone recommends you to check something out on the internet they immediately by default say, "Google it". It's not because they prefer it. It's just like calling any cola COKE or calling any tissue KLEENEX. It's a learned behavior, not a preference.

It depends on what you need to search for. i use DuckDuckGo often... but when I'm searching for some things I can get different results or more results if using Google. They do have more advanced search algorithms, as well as having indexed far mor websites I would think. And if I need to hire a contractor or business in my area... a lot of businesses use Google adwords... so if, for example, I search for "electrician in Seattle'... their ads will pop up. It's helpful sometimes.

And unfortunately for me I'm old enough to still remember when Google wasn't around, and I used some of the other popular search engines some people above referenced. I still remember someone telling a group of us to try this new thing called 'Google.' For a lot of people like me... using Google wasn't just a learned behavior as you suggest. We began using it out of preference. For younger generations perhaps it's as you say.

it's interesting because for a lot of businesses I don't have an issue with them becoming huge, due to being very good at their core business. It's when they start branching out and taking over everything they can, due to that size. Amazon is far more guilty of this. They completely took over selling stuff online... but then started owning a lot of other websites, starting movie productions, taking over the post office in effect, etc.

That would suck for the customers. Would I have to search two different services to find the site or video I want. Would you tubers have to upload their content to two different services? Would YouTube1 get some channels and youtube2 get another channels?
On point, I understand the need to regulate and watch out for behemoths becoming out of control... but all this AppStore, Google, etc potentially incoming measures seem to disregard COMPLETELY the user’s point of view and the freelancers/indie devs s.

A monopoly doesn’t really happen in a vacuum or can just forced... it has to be something good, useful. People naturally flow to it. I used to use Google Maps exclusively for years on end, because it works, not because I was forced to use it. Same with gmail, search, etc. Now I use Apple Maps because it got a lot better overtime and is nicely integrated on the Apple ecosystem.

On that same note why Google hasn’t been attacked for having the Google maps monopoly since many years ago?

Fine, break all these search engine things apart, force the AppStores have third party installs, etc but OPTIONALLY. I’ll continue using whatever I deem better or more useful for me and don’t want to be forced to have to change.

It also bothers me that they focus more on the business side and less on the data and privacy intense collection for example.

I’m on this demographic, I remember it all. Suddenly a search engine that actually found the stuff being searched.

And the gmail being the only one with a 1GB limit that would increase overtime, unheard of. Also done via invitations on its beginnings.

This is something Theodore Roosevelt understood. If a trust (monopoly) controlled an entire industry but provided good service at reasonable rates, it was a "good" trust to be left alone. Heck, until relatively recently the US postal service was a monopoly and still provides services that are simply uneconomical to do.

This gets into what makes a "bad" monopoly as Theodore Roosevelt saw it: jacking up rates and exploiting consumers. That sounds more like cable and ISPs than anything Apple or Google do. iTunes provided a legal way to bypass the defacto monopoly record labels had. Google won the search engine war for the simple reason they provided a better service not because they were going microsoft and crippling competitors.

That is not to say Apple and Google have not gone into "bad" monopoly land: the ebook deal and google paying for browser makers to default to their search engine for all practical purposes crossed the line.

But instead of going after the monopolies that actually matter, the cable companies, we get this dog and pony show.

Yes! I forgot about that, but yes, I had a friend of mine ‘invite’ me to open a gmail account. My god, that seems so long ago now... time flies
